An academic internship is an approved and monitored work experience that is related to an academic field of study and meets specific learning goals.  


What are the components of an internship?

  • Viable learning experience.  
  • Connection to academics.
  • Supervision by a professional in the field.
  • Faculty sponsorship.
  • 1 - 6 credits (determined by the academic requirements).
  • A minimum of 40 hours of field experience for each credit hour earned is standard, although the final number of hours will be established with the Faculty Supervisor.
  • Graded in accordance with standard letter grade policy unless otherwise designated.
  • Paid or unpaid.

Who is eligible to do an internship?

  • Student must have junior or senior standing (completed 58 or more hours)

Academic departments may establish more rigorous internship requirements.  


What is the responsibility of the professional supervisor?

  •  To provide real professional training/experiences.
  •  To provide close supervision of the intern.
  •  To provide the student with an opportunity to learn about the profession on a day-to-day basis.
  •  To communicate often with the student about his/her performance.
  •  To provide the student with the resources necessary to succeed in the internship.
  •  To complete and submit an evaluation of the intern to the Office of Career Services.
     

What is the responsibility of the faculty sponsor?

  • To set the student’s academic requirements.
  • To consult personally with the intern.
  • To contact the student’s supervisor (at least once, either in person or by phone).
  • To evaluate the academic work and the supervisor’s evaluation form.
  • To complete the grade roster.

To require students to complete a site-evaluation form as part of their academic work.
