Mentoring Intern

Hours: Flexible to student schedule

Position Overview: Mentor a highly at-risk youth.  Assist supervisor with mentor recruitment at their respective University or College, as well as assist program staff in screening, matching and supervising volunteers and children in the Big Brothers Big Sisters program.

Internship Description:

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Siouxland is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing and supporting one to one mentoring relationships.  Under direction of the Recruitment Coordinator, the person will assist in developing and maintaining a recruitment plan for their respective University or College and campaign on campus for volunteer recruitment.  This person will also participate in a one on one match with a youth who may exhibit at-risk behaviors or in need of special guidance.  May require occasional evening hours.

Responsibilities:

A. Create and implement a recruitment plan for local college campuses

B. Complete enrollment and screening process to be matched with a youth who exhibits at-risk behaviors.

C. Assist program staff as needed with child enrollment process

D. Help in the implementation of agency group activities

E. Assist with regular office duties as assigned.

Work Environment:

Interns in this position will be required to work in a standard office environment and come in direct contact with staff and the public.  Majority of time will be spent doing match activities with their Little as well as on-campus recruitment.

Requirements:

Education: Student should be a junior or senior majoring in psychology, counseling, sociology, criminal justice, social work, education or other related fields.

Skills: Excellent communication skills.  Ability to deal with people from different cultural and economic backgrounds and situations under stress.  Ability to conduct one's self in a professional and diplomatic manner.
