
Morningside
College realizes that not all students learn in the
same way and recognizes that many bright and talented
individuals
with learning disabilities or ADHD are successful
when given the proper tools. Therefore, we offer
a specialized program specifically designed to develop
students' skills
and aid in their learning process.
The program has the following components:
- two-credit preparatory reading course and a two-credit preparatory writing course. The courses, Academic Reading and Basic Writing, prepare students for college-level writing and reading by strengthening skills in sentence construction, paragraph development, essay composition, reading comprehension, and critical reading.
- four-credit preparatory math course. Intermediate Algebra prepares students for college-level quantitative reasoning classes by strengthening algebra skills.
- subject specific tutoring/group tutoring.
- advocacy for student's academic provisions. The Focus staff ensures the rights of each student in accordance with federal laws and regulations
- WYNN software – an innovative computer program designed to assist and enhance reading, writing, and comprehension skills.
- Dragon NaturallySpeaking software - speech recognition software provides students with dyslexia and other disabilities with the freedom to write and control their computer with their voices.
- academic accommodations including but not limited to:
› testing accommodations, including extended time, oral examinations, reduced
distraction space, and use of computers for essays and short answers
› books-on-tape and recorded lectures
› note takers
› preferential seating.
- academic progress reports provided throughout the semester. The learning disability specialists work closely with faculty to provide progress reports to students.
