Heather Reid, professor of philosophy at Morningside College, recently presented papers at philosophy conferences in New York and Canada.

Her paper “Athletics as Mimesis: Implications for Plato and Aristotle” discusses how athletics are mimetic, yet Plato allowed them in education because they are virtuous. This was presented at the 32nd annual meeting of the Society for Ancient Greek Philosophy in New York.

Her paper “The Ethics of Efficiency: Performance Enhancing Technologies and Olympic Fair Play” discusses how performance enhancing technologies decrease the ethical value of the Olympic sport. This was presented at the 2014 International Symposium on Olympic Studies at the University of Western Ontario in Canada.

Reid is a specialist in ancient philosophy and the philosophy of sport. She has published six books related to sports philosophy and the Olympics. She is currently completing the NEH/Mellon Postdoctoral Fellowship at the American Academy in Rome. A member of the Morningside faculty since 1996, she received her doctorate from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.
