Maggie Kukuk, a forward from Sioux City, Iowa, became the all-time leading career scorer in Morningside College women’s soccer history during the 2011 season.
Kukuk, a 2009 Morningside graduate who used only three seasons of her athletic eligibility as an undergraduate, came back to play her final season this fall while she pursued a master of arts in teaching degree. She led the Mustangs with 21 goals and five assists for 47 points and provided the game winning goal in eight of the team’s 11 triumphs.
She became the all-time leading scorer in Morningside history with 170 career points to break the former Mustang standard of 164 points set by Janel Gillies from 2000-03. Kukuk, who was already the Mustangs’ all-time career leader in assists and game winning goals, raised her record totals to 44 assists and 26 game winning goals. She ranks second in Morningside history with 63 career goals.
Her eight game winning goals this season was the second highest total in Morningside history, while her 21 goals and 47 points ranked third and fourth, respectively, among the Mustangs’ single-season bests.
Kelsey Niles, a sophomore midfielder from Sioux City, also dealt five assists this season to share the team leadership with Kukuk.

Jamie Swotek, a junior forward from Council Bluffs, Iowa, climbed the Mustangs’ career scoring charts this season. Swotek dealt four assists to raise her career total to 11 assists for the 10th highest total in Morningside history. She moved into 13th place on the Mustangs’ all-time scoring list with 27 career points.
Alyssa Reed, a sophomore goal keeper from Parker, Colo., played all but 222 minutes this season. She finished the campaign with an 8-9-1 record with 92 saves, 5.7 shutouts, and a goals against average of 1.86 goals per game. Her 5.7 shutouts was the fourth highest single-season total in Morningside history, while her 1.86 goals against average ranked fifth, her eight wins ranked sixth, and her 92 saves ranked seventh among the Mustangs’ all-time single-season bests.
Reed ranks fifth in Morningside’s career annals with 136 saves, 10 goal keeper wins, and 6.7 shutouts.
Morningside posted an 11-9-1 overall record, finished seventh in the Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) standings with a 4-6 league mark, and advanced to the championship match of the GPAC Post-Season Tournament during the 2011 season.

Lydia Bienlien, Maggie Kukuk, and Kathryn Sorenson have been named 2011 Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athletes in the sport of women’s soccer.
Bienlien, a junior defender from Glenwood, Iowa, has a 4.00 cumulative grade point average (GPA) with majors in biology and chemistry.
Kukuk, a forward who is a graduate student pursing a master of arts in teaching degree, has a 3.96 cumulative GPA in her graduate work.
Sorenson, a senior forward from Sioux Falls, S.D., has a 3.74 cumulative GPA with a major in biology.
Student-athletes must be of at least junior academic status and have a minimum GPA of 3.50 in order to be eligible for Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athlete honors.

Morningside College forward Maggie Kukuk and defender Lydia Bienlien have been named to the 2011 Capital One Academic All-America College Division Women’s Soccer Team as selected by College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Kukuk, a graduate student from Sioux City who is pursuing a master of arts in teaching degree, was named to the Academic All-America First Team, while Bienlien, a junior from Glenwood, Iowa, was named to the Academic All-America Second Team.
Kukuk had a 3.59 cumulative grade point average (GPA) as an undergraduate and has a 3.96 GPA in her graduate work. She was the Mustangs’ leading scorer this season with 21 goals and five assists for 47 points. Kukuk scored the game winning goal in eight of the Mustangs’ 11 victories and set a school record with 26 career game winning goals. She is the all-time leading scorer in Morningside history with 170 career points and is also a school-record holder with 44 career assists. She scored 63 goals during her Morningside career for the second highest total in school history.
Bienlien has a perfect 4.00 GPA with majors in biology and chemistry. She played in 20 of the team’s 21 contests and helped the Mustangs’ limit their opposition to averages of 1.64 goals and 12.8 shots per game.
Athletes must be of at least sophomore academic status, be a starter or significant reserve, and have a cumulative GPA of 3.30 or higher to be eligible for Capital One Academic honors.
Morningside finished the 2011 season with an 11-9-1 record and reached the championship match of the Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) Post-Season Tournament.

Kukuk, a graduate student from Sioux City, was the Mustangs’ leading scorer this season with team-high totals of 21 goals, five assists, and 47 points. She scored the game winning goal in eight of the Mustangs’ 11 victories.
Kukuk was named to the All-GPAC first-team for the fourth time in her career. She previously received first-team honors in 2006, 2007, and 2008 and was the GPAC’s Offensive Player of the Year in 2007.
She is the all-time leading scorer in Morningside history with 170 career points and also holds Mustang career records with 44 assists and 26 game winning goals. Kukuk is second in the Morningside record book with 63 career goals.
In addition to Kukuk, the Mustangs placed Rachel Eisenbraun and Kathryn Sorenson on the All-GPAC honorable mention list.
Eisenbraun, a freshman defender from Black Hawk, S.D., contributed one goal and two points to the Mustangs’ offensive attack and was a defensive standout for a Morningside team that limited its opposition to averages of 1.64 goals and 12.8 shots per game.
Sorenson, a senior forward from Sioux Falls, S.D., scored five goals and 10 points and had two game winning goals. She also received all-conference honorable mention recognition last year.
Morningside posted an 11-9-1 record during the 2011 season and reached the championship match of the GPAC Post-Season Tournament, where it lost 4-1 against GPAC regular season champion Hastings College.

Morningside’s women’s soccer season ended in the GPAC Post-Season Tournament Championship Match when the Mustangs dropped a 4-1 verdict against regular season GPAC champion Hastings College on Saturday in Hastings, Neb.
The 12th-ranked Broncos improved their record to 18-2-1 and will advance to the NAIA National Tournament, while Morningside closed the books on an 11-9-1 campaign. The underdog Mustangs, who entered the tournament as the No. 7 seed, had taken out No. 2 seed Doane College and No. 3 seed Midland University to advance to the title match.
Hastings scored two goals less than one minute apart to take an early 2-0 lead 16 minutes into the contest.
The Mustangs narrowed the difference to 2-1 at the 68-minute mark of the second half on a goal by Maggie Kukuk. The goal was set up by an assist from Brooke Martin.
Hastings outshot the Mustangs by an 18-13 margin.
Mustang goal keeper Alyssa Reed had seven saves, while Tenaya Howsden had six saves for Hastings.

Alyssa Reed, a sophomore goal keeper from Parker, Colo., has been named the Hauff Mid-America Sports/Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) Women’s Soccer Defensive Player of the Week.
Reed did not allow a goal in the Mustangs’ two matches last week. She played the first 57 minutes and had one save in the Mustangs’ 6-0 victory against College of Saint Mary and had five saves in Morningside’s 0-0 double overtime tie with Missouri Valley College.
Reed received the GPAC Defensive Player of the Week award for the second time this season. She has a goals against average of 0.63 goals per game so far this season.
Morningside will take a 5-1-1 record into a Tuesday evening contest against Grand View University in Des Moines, Iowa.

Maggie Kukuk, a senior forward from Sioux City, and Alyssa Reed, a sophomore goal keeper from Parker, Colo., have been named the Hauff Mid-America Sports/Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) Women’s Soccer Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week.
The two players helped lead the Mustangs to two victories to start the season with a 3-1 triumph against Iowa Wesleyan College on Saturday and a 2-0 win against Jamestown College on Sunday.
Kukuk played a role in four of the Mustangs’ five goals last weekend. She scored two goals against Iowa Wesleyan and had a goal and an assist against Jamestown. Kukuk supplied the game winning goal in both victories to raise her career total to a school-record 18 game winning goals.
Kukuk, a former two-time NAIA honorable mention All-American and three-time first-team All-GPAC performer, graduated from Morningside in 2009, but returned to the team this fall to use her final season of athletic eligibility while she pursues a master’s degree. She is Morningside’s all-time leader with 40 career assists and is third in the Mustangs’ record book with 45 career goals and 130 career points.
Reed allowed only one goal in the Mustangs’ two victories and posted her first shutout of the season in the win against Jamestown. She had six saves against Iowa Wesleyan and one save against Jamestown.
