Kelly Berst, Brooke Niles, Maggie Kukuk, and Maureen Vandenbroucke have been named to the honorable mention list of the 2006 NAIA All-America Women’s Soccer team.
Berst and Vandenbroucke were both repeat honorable mention All-Americans from last year, while Niles was an honorable mention All-American as a defender when she was a sophomore.

Berst, a junior goal keeper from Lincoln, Neb., had a 15-5-1 record with 114 saves, 6.2 shutouts, and a goals against average of 1.32 goals per game. She set Morningside single-season records with her 15 goal keeper victories and 6.2 shutouts to break the former Mustang standards of 10 wins by Kyla Marking in 2002 and 4.2 shutouts by Katie Ripley in 2002. Berst tied her own Morningside record of three consecutive shutouts during a stretch from Sept. 6 to Sept. 13.
Berst is Morningside’s all-time career leader with 335 saves, 12.2 shutouts, and 28 goal keeper victories.
Niles scored 28 goals and dealt six assists for 62 points to break the former Morningside single-season standards of 23 goals and 60 points by Janel Gillies in 2002. Niles tied the Mustangs’ single-match scoring record with four goals in a 4-0 win against Dordt College on Oct. 3 and tied a single-season record with six game winning goals.
She is the second leading scorer in Morningside history with career totals of 61 goals, 25 assists, and 147 points.

Kukuk, a freshman forward from Sioux City, was the Mustangs’ second leading scorer with 11 goals and a school-record 20 assists for 42 points. She broke the Mustangs’ former single-season record of 14 assists by Gillies in 2002 and tied the Mustangs’ single-match assist record with three in Morningside’s 4-0 win against Dordt on Oct. 3. Kukuk also tied the Mustangs’ single-season record with six game winning goals.
Vandenbroucke, a junior defender from Gretna, Neb., was the defensive standout for a Morningside team that limited its opposition to averages of 1.18 goals and 10.3 shots per game. She contributed four points to the Mustangs’ scoring attack with one goal and two assists.
Morningside posted a 15-5-1 record during the 2006 campaign en route to the NAIA Region III Championship and it’s first-ever appearance in the NAIA National Tournament. The Mustangs finished second in the Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) standings with a 10-2 league mark.

Morningside broke five team records and broke or tied 12 individual records during the 2006 women’s soccer season.
The Mustangs posted a 15-5-1 record during the 2006 campaign en route to the NAIA Region III Championship and their first-ever appearance in the NAIA National Tournament. Morningside finished second in the Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) standings with a 10-2 league mark.
The ability to win away from home was pivotal in the Mustangs’ success. Morningside won eight matches on the road to break its former record of seven road wins in 2002. The Mustangs also set a record with five consecutive wins on the road from Sept. 27 to Oct.14 to break their former mark of four consecutive road wins in 2002.
Morningside broke school single-match records with 11 goals and 13 assists and for margin of victory in an 11-0 triumph against Mount Marty College on Sept. 13 to break its former records of 10 goals and a 10-goal victory margin in a 10-0 win against Buena Vista University in 2002. Their 13 assists against Mount Marty shattered their former record of nine assists in contests against Mount Marty in 2002 and the University of Sioux Falls in 2003.

Walding, a junior midfielder from Sioux City, also tied the Mustangs’ single-match assist record when she set up three scores in the Mustangs’ 11-0 win against Mount Marty.
Berst, a junior goal keeper from Lincoln, Neb., set Morningside single-season records with 15 goal keeper victories and 6.2 shutouts to break the former Mustang standards of 10 wins by Kyla Marking in 2002 and 4.2 shutouts by Katie Ripley in 2002. Brooke Niles, a senior forward from Sioux City, has been named to the first-team of the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Women’s Soccer Team as selected by College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Niles has a 3.86 cumulative grade point average with a major in biology.
Niles, the 2006 NAIA Region III and Great Plains Athletic Conference Player of the Year, was the Mustangs’ leading scorer this season with 28 goals and six assists for 62 points to break the college’s former single-season records of 23 goals and 60 points by Janel Gillies in 2003.
Niles finished her career as the second leading scorer in Morningside history with career totals of 61 goals, 25 assists and 147 points.
She was named a Daktronics NAIA All-America Scholar-Athlete earlier this week.
ESPN The Magazine Academic All-Americans must be of at least sophomore status and have cumulative grade point averages of 3.20 or higher.
Morningside posted a 15-5-1 record and qualified for the NAIA National Tournament for the first time in school history.

Marisha Lenz, Brooke Niles, and Megan Walding have all been named 2006 Daktronics NAIA Women's Soccer All-America Scholar-Athletes.
Lenz, a junior defender from Lincoln, Neb., has a 3.86 cumulative grade point average (GPA) with a major in elementary education. She was the Mustangs’ fifth leading scorer with three goals and four assists for 10 points.
Niles, a senior forward from Sioux City, has a 3.86 cumulative GPA with a major in biology. Niles led the Mustangs in scoring this season with 28 goals and six assists for 62 points to set new Morningside records for goals and points in a season.
Walding, a junior midfielder from Sioux City has a 3.61 cumulative GPA with a major in biology. She was the Mustangs’ third leading scorer with three goals and eight assists for 14 points.
Daktronics NAIA Scholar-Athletes must be of junior or senior status and have cumulative GPAs of 3.50 or higher.

Northwood University scored two goals in the second half to defeat Morningside 3-1 in the first round of the 2006 NAIA Women’s Soccer National Tournament on Wednesday at Olathe, Kan.
The heavily favored Seahawks broke the match open in the second half after the two teams had battled to a 1-1 standoff in the first half.
Northwood, ranked 17th in the final NAIA regular season poll, improved its record to 17-0 and will face second-ranked Lindsey Wilson College in Thursday’s second round. Morningside, which was making its first-ever national tournament appearance, bowed out with a 15-5-1 record.
The Seahawks have 10 shutout victories this season and have allowed an average of only 5.4 shots per game, but the Mustangs outshot Northwood 10-6 over the first 45 minutes.
Northwood scored first at the 12:45 mark of the first half on a goal by Lene Bjerkeli, her 24th of the season.
Morningside tied the score at 1-1 at the 28-minute mark when senior standout Brooke Niles tallied her school-record 28th goal of the season off assists from Megan Walding and Val Weber. The goal raised Niles’ season’s scoring tally to a school-record 62 points.
The score stayed that way until Sofia Abrahamsson put the Seahawks ahead to stay when she scored just over six minutes into the second half. The Seahawks took control four minutes later when Bjerkeli scored her second goal of the contest to put them in front 3-1.
Northwood outshot Morningside 17-12 for the contest.
Mustang goal keeper Kelly Berst had eight saves.

Morningside advanced to the 2006 NAIA National Soccer Tournament with a 1-0 victory against Midland Lutheran College in Tuesday's NAIA Region III Championship Match at Elwood Olsen Stadium.
The Mustangs will take a 15-4-1 record to the national tournament slated for Nov. 15-21 at Olathe, Kan. The national tournament pairings will be announced after all of the regions have completed their championship play.
Morningside, which defeated Midland Lutheran 1-0 in double overtime when the teams met during the regular season in Fremont, Neb., received a standout performance by junior goal keeper Kelly Berst. Berst came up with eight saves in a contest where the Mustangs were outshot by a 14-7 margin.
Maggie Kukuk scored the only goal of the contest when she beat Warrior goal keeper Jessie Suponchick at the 38:30 mark of the opening half. The goal was set up by an assist from Lindsay Neste.

Brooke Niles is the Hauff Mid-America Sports/Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) Women’s Soccer Player of the Year to headline the 2006 All-GPAC Women’s Soccer Team as selected by the league’s head coaches.
Niles, a senior forward from Sioux City, is joined on the All-GPAC first-team by Morningside teammates Maggie Kukuk and Maureen Vandenbroucke.
Niles is the Mustangs’ leading scorer with a school-record 25 goals and six assists for 56 points. Her 25 goals broke the former Morningside single-season record of 23 goals by Janel Gillies in 2002. Her 56 points are just four shy of Gillies’ school-record total of 60 points set during the 2002 campaign. Niles tied the Mustangs’ single-match scoring record with four goals in a 4-0 win against Dordt College on Oct. 3.
Niles is the second leading scorer in Morningside history with 58 career goals, 25 career assists, and 141 career points. Niles earned second-team All-GPAC and second-team All-NAIA Region III honors as a junior, first-team All-GPAC, first-team All-NAIA Region IV, and honorable mention NAIA All-America honors as a sophomore, and second-team All-GPAC laurels as a freshman.

Kukuk, a freshman forward from Sioux City, is the Mustangs’ second leading scorer with 10 goals and a school-record 19 assists for 39 points. She broke the former Morningside record of 14 assists by Gillies in 2002. Kukuk tied a Morningside single-match record when she dealt three assists in the Mustangs’ 4-0 win against Dana College on Sept. 30.
Vandenbroucke, a junior defender from Gretna, Neb., has helped the Mustangs limit their opposition to a scoring average of just 1.15 goals per game. Morningside has seven shutout victories this season and has held 13 of its 18 opponents to scoring totals of one goal or less. Aside from her defensive exploits, Vandenbroucke has also contributed four points to the Mustangs’ offensive attack with one goal and two assists.
Vandenbroucke is a repeat first-team selection from last year’s All-GPAC team. She also received first-team NAIA All-Region III and honorable mention NAIA All-America honors last year.
In addition to their three first-team selections, the Mustangs’ Kelly Berst, a junior goal keeper from Lincoln, Neb., was named to the All-GPAC second-team.
Berst has a 13-4-1 record with 95 saves, a school-record 5.2 shutouts, and a goals against average of 1.32 goals per game.
Berst is Morningside’s all-time leader with 26 career goal keeper victories and 11.2 career shutouts and ranks second in the Mustangs’ annals with 316 career saves. She received first-team All-GPAC, first-team All-NAIA Region III, and honorable mention NAIA All-America honors in 2005.
Morningside’s Lindsay Neste, a sophomore midfielder from Bremerton, Wash., and Emily Petermann, a sophomore defender from Sioux Falls, S.D., were named to the All-GPAC honorable mention list. Neste has scored one goal and four assists for six points.
The Mustangs posted a 13-4-1 record during the regular season and are the No. 1 seed for the NAIA Region III Women’s Soccer Championships.

Kelly Berst, a junior goal keeper from Lincoln, Neb., has been named the Hauff Mid-America Sports/Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) Women’s Soccer Defensive Player of the Week and the NAIA Region III Women’s Soccer Player of the Week for her performances last week.
Berst allowed only one goal in the Mustangs’ two victories last week. She had eight saves in Morningside’s 3-1 victory against the University of Sioux Falls on Oct. 11 and came up with 10 saves in the Mustangs’ 1-0 double overtime victory against Midland Lutheran College on Oct. 14.
Berst has a school-record 5.2 shutouts this season and has allowed only one goal in her last four starts. She has an 11-3-1 record, 84 saves, and a goals against average of 1.31 goals per game this season.
She is Morningside’s all-time leader with 24 career goal keeper wins and 11.2 career shutouts and ranks second in Morningside history with 305 career saves.

Niles, who received the GPAC and NAIA Region III Player of the Week awards for the second time this season, has scored eight goals in the last three matches to raise her season’s tally to 21 goals. She is two goals off the Morningside single-season record of 23 goals by Janel Gillies in 2002. Niles also has five assists and a team-high 47 points.
She is the second leading scorer in Morningside history with career totals of 54 goals, 24 assists, and 132 points.
Maggie Kukuk, a sophomore forward from Sioux City, has been named the Hauff Mid-America Sports/Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) Women's Soccer Player of the Week after she helped lead the Mustangs to two victories in their three matches last week.
Kukuk scored two goals and three assists in the three contests. She tallied one goal and two assists in an 11-0 victory against Mount Marty and scored a goal and an assist in the Mustangs’ 2-1 triumph against Kansas Wesleyan University. She scored the game-winning goal at the 66-minute mark of the Kansas Wesleyan match to break a 1-1 tie.
Brooke Niles, a senior forward from Sioux City, has been named the NAIA Region III and the Hauff Mid-America Sports/Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) Women’s Soccer Player of the Week for her performances in the Mustangs’ triumphs against Briar Cliff University and Doane College last week.
Niles scored two goals in the Mustangs’ 4-0 win against city rival Briar Cliff on Sept. 6 and had three goals in their 7-0 victory against Doane.
Niles has tallied nine goals and one assist for 19 points for the Mustangs, who will take a 3-1-1 record into a 3 p.m. contest against Mount Marty College on Wednesday at Yankton, S.D.
Niles has tallied 42 goals during her Morningside career to tie her with 2004 graduate Megan Winn for second place in the Morningside record book. Niles is the third leading scorer in Morningside history with 104 career points.
