Oakley A Second-Team Academic All-American

Cameron Oakley, a sophomore from Sioux City, has been named a 2011-12 Capital One College Division Women’s At-Large Second-Team Academic All-American as selected by College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).


Oakley has a 4.00 cumulative GPA with majors in political science and English. She had an 18-hole scoring average of 85.8 strokes during the 2011-12 season en route to All-GPAC honors.


Athletes must be of at least sophomore academic status, be a starter or significant reserve, and have a cumulative GPA of 3.30 or higher to be eligible for Capital One Academic All-America honors.

Peters Breaks Mustangs' Scoring Record

Sophie Peters, a freshman from Fremont, Neb., broke the Morningside College women’s golf single-season scoring record during the 2011-12 campaign.


Peters had a total of 1280 strokes in her 16 competitive rounds for an average of 80.0 strokes per 18 holes. She broke the former Morningside scoring average record of 82.3 accomplished by Kristi Tighe in both the 2006-07 and 2007-08 seasons. Peters led the Mustangs with an average of 81.3 in the fall and a 78.8 in the spring.


She tied the Mustangs’ single-round scoring record with a 73 at the Dakota Wesleyan University Palace City Classic on Sept. 30 in Mitchell, S.D., and at the Nebraska Wesleyan University Invitational on April 1 in Lincoln, Neb. Her one-over par 73 at Lakeview Golf Course during the Palace City Classic established a Morningside single-round scoring record in relation to par.


Peters was the individual medalist with a 78 when she led the Mustangs to the team championship at the Mount Marty College Invitational on April 13.


The Mustangs broke their team home course scoring record with a 335 to win the Morningside Invitational on Aug. 31 at Whispering Creek Golf Club to shatter their former home course best of 352 at Whispering Creek during the 2010-11 campaign. The Mustangs’ record breaking score was comprised of a 77 from Cameron Oakley, a sophomore from Sioux City; an 80 from Peters; an 88 from Kelsey Nelson, a sophomore from Rockford, Ill.; and a 90 from Erin Hedlund, a junior from Hinton, Iowa.


Peters led the Mustangs with her 80.0-stroke scoring average, while Oakley finished second on the team with an 85.8 average. Hedlund also finished with a scoring average in the 80s at 89.1 and Nelson just missed at 90.9. Callie Anderson, a freshman from Sioux City, was also a regular in the Mustangs’ lineup and finished with a scoring average of 91.3.


Morningside won four tournament titles over the 2011-12 campaign with wins at the Morningside Invitational, Dordt College Invitational, and Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) Qualifier #1 tournaments in the fall and a triumph at the Mount Marty Invitational in the spring.


The Mustangs finished third in the combined GPAC Qualifier tournament scoring with a total of 1395 in the four tournaments to finish just one stroke out of second place.

Mustangs Place Three On All-GPAC Team

Morningside College placed three players on the 2011-12 All-Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) Women’s Golf Team as selected by the league’s head coaches.


The Mustangs’ All-GPAC selections are Erin Hedlund, a junior from Hinton, Iowa; Cameron Oakley, a sophomore from Sioux City; and Sophie Peters, a freshman from Fremont, Neb. Oakley was a repeat selection from last year’s all-conference team.


Hedlund fashioned a scoring average of 89.1 strokes per 18 holes this season, including averages of 90.8 in the fall and 87.5 in the spring. Her best tournament finish came in GPAC Qualifier Tournament #4 on April 27 at Sioux City’s Green Valley Golf Course when she carded an 86 for runner-up medalist honors. Hedlund finished 10th in the combined GPAC Qualifier individual standings with a total of 356 strokes in the four tournaments.


Oakley ranked second on the Mustangs with an 85.8-stroke scoring average this year, including norms of 84.4 in the fall and 87.1 in the spring. Oakley’s best round of the season came in the Mustangs’ first competition of the year when she carded a 77 for runner-up medalist honors to lead the Mustangs to the team championship at the Morningside Invitational on Aug. 31 at Whispering Creek Golf Club. Oakley finished seventh in the combined GPAC Qualifier individual standings with a 347.


Peters led the Mustangs with scoring averages of 81.3 in the fall and 78.8 in the spring. She finished with a school-record scoring average of 80.0 to shatter the former Morningside record of 82.3 set by Kristi Tighe in both the 2006-07 and 2007-08 campaigns. Peters carded a 78 to claim individual medalist honors at the Mount Marty College Invitational on April 17 and finished fourth in the combined GPAC Qualifier individual standings with a 336. Peters tied Morningside’s 18-hole scoring record with 73s at Lakeview Golf Course in Mitchell, S.D., on Sept. 30 and at Mahoney Golf Course in Lincoln, Neb., on April 1. Peters’ one-over par 73 at Lakeview Golf Course set a school record for scoring in relation to par.


Morningside finished third in the GPAC Qualifier combined scoring with a 1,395 to finish just one stroke out of second place. The Mustangs won four tournament championships this season with victories at GPAC Qualifier #1, the Morningside Invitational, and Dordt College Invitational in the fall and the Mount Marty Invitational in the spring.

Morningside Finish Third In Final GPAC Qualifier

Morningside finished third, just two strokes out of first place, when the Mustangs hosted GPAC Women’s Golf Qualifier #4 on Friday at Green Valley Golf Course.

The Mustangs carded a team score of 360 to finish one stroke out of second place behind Dakota Wesleyan and two strokes behind team champion Northwestern.

Erin Hedlund led the Mustangs with one of the best rounds of her career. Hedlund fired an 86 on the windy day to take runner-up medalist honors in the field of 53 golfers.

Sophie Peters also had a top five finish with an 88 to finish tied for fourth place, while Cameron Oakley finished 10th with a 92 and Kelsey Nelson was 13th with a 94.

Northwestern’s team triumph enabled the Red Raiders to overtake Morningside for second place in the final combined scoring for this year’s four qualifier tournaments. The Mustangs, who entered the final tourney in second place with a one-stroke cushion over the Red Raiders, finished in third place with a total of 1,395 strokes. Dakota Wesleyan won the GPAC title with a 1,348 and Northwestern was second with a 1,394.

The Mustangs had three players finish in the top 10 in the combined individual scoring. Peters led the way with a 336 for fourth place, followed by Oakley in seventh place with a 347 and Hedlund in 10th with a 356.

Peters Earns GPAC Award For Third Time

Sophie Peters, a freshman from Fremont, Neb., has been named the Hauff Mid-America Sports/Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) Golfer of the Week for April 16-22.


Peters was the medalist at the Mount Marty College Invitational on April 17 when she carded a 78 to lead Morningside to a one-stroke victory margin over runner-up Northwestern College. She had the low individual score in a field of 27 golfers.

Peters earned the GPAC Golfer of the Week award for the second time this spring and for the third time during the 2011-12 season.

 

 

 

 

Peters Leads Mustangs To Mount Marty Title

Morningside College’s Sophie Peters, a freshman from Fremont, Neb., was the individual medalist with a 78 to lead the Mustangs to the team title at Tuesday’s Mount Marty College Invitational women’s golf tournament in Yankton, S.D.


The Mustangs finished with a team score of 335 to edge Northwestern College by one stroke for the team title.


Morningside had three other players finish among the top 10 individuals. Callie Anderson, a freshman from Sioux City, finished third with an 84; Erin Hedlund, a junior from Hinton, Iowa, was fourth with an 85; and Kelsey Nelson, a sophomore from Rockford, Iowa, was 10th with an 88.

Peters Named GPAC Golfer Of The Week

Sophie Peters, a freshman from Fremont, Neb., has been named the Hauff Mid-America Sports/Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) Women’s Golfer of the Week for March 26 to April 1.


Peters had a scoring average of 76.0 strokes per 18 holes to win the honor. She finished third in a field of 34 golfers at the Ottawa University Spring Invitational held March 26 and 27 with rounds of 77 and 78 for a two-day total of 155. Peters added a three-over par 73 in last Sunday’s opening round of the Nebraska Wesleyan University Spring Invitational to tie Morningside’s 18-hole scoring record. Peters eventually finished the tournament as the runner-up medalist with a two-round total of 152.

 

 

 

 

Mustangs Win GPAC Qualifier No. 1

Morningside is the team leader after the first of four Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) Women’s Golf Qualifier Tournaments scheduled for 2011-12.


The Mustangs finished first in GPAC Qualifier No. 1 held Friday at The Ridge in Sioux Center, Iowa. Morningside carded a team scored of 337 for a one-stroke victory margin over reigning GPAC champion Dakota Wesleyan University, while Northwestern College was just four strokes behind in third place with a 341. It was the Mustangs’ third tournament title in four outings so far this season.


Cameron Oakley, a sophomore from Sioux City, led the Mustangs with an 81 to put her in second place in the individual standings, three strokes behind defending GPAC champion Danielle Bellet of Dakota Wesleyan.


The Mustangs had two other players finish in the top 10. Erin Hedlund, a junior from Hinton, Iowa, had an 83 for fourth place and Sophie Peters, a freshman from Fremont, Neb., had an 84 for sixth place. The Mustangs completed their score with an 89 from Kelsey Jensen, a freshman from Hutchinson, Kan.


The team champion from the combined four-tournament scoring will advance to the 2012 NAIA Women’s Golf National Championship to be held May 15-18 at Link Hills Country Club in Greenville, Tenn.

Peters had a scoring average of 81.0 strokes per 18 holes for a pair of top three individual finishes in the Mustangs’ two tournaments last week. She was the runner-up medalist with a 79 to lead Morningside to the team championship at last Friday’s Dordt College Invitational in Sioux Center, Iowa, and finished third in the individual standings with an 83 to lead the Mustangs to a third place finish at last Thursday’s Northwestern College Lady Red Raider Invitational in Orange City, Iowa.


Peters has a scoring average of 80.7 for a Mustang team that has won the team title at two of their first three tournaments.


Morningside will compete in the first of four GPAC Qualifier tournaments for the 2011-12 season on Friday in Sioux Center.

Morningside edged perennial GPAC women’s golf power Dakota Wesleyan University by one stroke to win the team title at Friday’s Dordt College Invitational in Sioux Center, Iowa.

The Mustangs carded a team score of 327 and had three players finish among the top 10 individuals in the nine-school tournament.

Freshman Sophie Peters led the way with an eight-over par 79 to finish second in the individual standings. Cameron Oakley carded an 80 for fourth place and Erin Hedlund finished seventh with an 83.

Kelsey Nelson completed the Mustangs’ team score with an 85.

The Mustangs, winners in two of their first three tournaments, will return to Sioux Center for the first of the four GPAC Qualifier tournaments for the 2011-12 year on Friday, Sept. 16.

Mustangs Start Season With Triumph At Morningside Invitational

Morningside College’s women’s golf team opened the 2011 fall season with a one-stroke victory margin over runner-up Dakota Wesleyan University to reign over a nine-team field at Wednesday’s Morningside Invitational held at Whispering Creek Golf Club.

The Mustangs carded a team score of 335 and were led by runner-up medalist Cameron Oakley, a sophomore from Sioux City, who carded a 77. Sophie Peters, a freshman from Fremont, Neb., was next with an 80 to finish fourth in the individual standings. Kelsey Nelson, a sophomore from Rockford, Ill., also gave the Mustangs a top 10 finish with an 88 to finish in a tie for eighth place. Erin Hedlund, a junior from Hinton, Iowa, added a 90 to complete the Mustangs’ winning score.

Morningside’s Kelsey Jensen, a freshman from Hutchinson, Kan., fired a 79 to finish third in the individual standings and lead the Mustangs’ B team to a fourth place finish with a 367.

The Mustangs will compete in the Northwestern College Invitational on Thursday, Sept. 8, in Orange City, Iowa.
