Volleyball Coach

Sara Horn enjoyed great success during the 2011 campaign in her first season as the Mustangs' head coach.

Horn was named the 2011 Hauff Mid-America Sports/Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) Coach of the Year after she guided the Mustangs to both the GPAC regular season and post-season tournament championships en route to a NAIA National Tournament appearance. The Mustangs, who had been tabbed for an eighth place finish in the GPAC Coaches' Pre-Season Poll, finished the season with a record of 26-9.

Horn was previously the head coach at Iowa Central Community College during the 2009 and 2010 campaigns. In 2010 she guided the Tritons to a 22-17 record and a berth in the National Junior College Athletic Association Region 11 Semifinals.

Prior to coaching at Iowa Central, Horn was the head coach for one year at Millard North High School in Nebraska and was an assistant coach for three seasons at Wayne State College, where she earned her master’s degree. Horn is a 2004 graduate of the University of Nebraska, where she was a three-year letterwinner for the Cornhuskers.

Horn guided Millard North to a 24-8 record, a No. 6 state ranking, and a state tournament appearance during the 2008 season. While at Wayne State, Horn helped lead the Wildcats to a three-year record of 79-20 and to three NCAA Division II tournament appearances.

While at Nebraska, Horn earned First-Team Academic All-Big 12 honors in 2002 and 2003 and was a Second-Team Academic All-Big 12 selection in 2001. She helped lead Nebraska to Big 12 championships in 2001 and 2002 and a NCAA Final Four appearance in 2001. As a senior, Horn ranked third in the Big 12 with an average of 1.26 blocks per game and was fifth in the league with a .317 hitting percentage.

She originally attended the University of Pacific, where she averaged 0.79 kills per game as a freshman.

Horn was a three-time all-stater during her prep career at Lincoln Northeast High School and was the honorary captain of the Lincoln Journal-Star’s 1998 all-state squad. She led the Rockets to a 35-1 record and the 1998 Nebraska Class A state championship and established Nebraska state records for career kills and kills per game.

Marty King is in his fourth season with the Mustangs after joining the team’s coaching staff in 2009.

Morningside has a 75-34 record and has made two NAIA National Tournament appearances during King’s tenure with the team. King oversees the Mustangs’ junior varsity program and has guided the Mustangs to a 31-8 record since 2010.

He had three years of coaching experience at the high school and club levels before joining the Mustangs.

King has been an information protection analyst at MidAmerican Energy Company for the last 16 years. King and his wife Karrie have one son.

Riley Callan is a student assistant coach following a two-year playing career with the Mustangs as an outside hitter.

She earned second-team All-GPAC recognition in her 2011 senior campaign after she averaged 2.49 kills and 3.12 digs per game. Callan averaged 2.84 digs per game over her two-year career with the Mustangs for the 12th highest career average in school history.

She previously played for two seasons at Iowa Central Community College, where she was a two-time National Junior College Athletlic Association Division II All-American.
