Morningside College head volleyball coach Sara Horn has announced the names of two transfer additions that joined the team at the semester break.
The transfers are Chelsey Harvey, a 5-10 outside hitter from Goldfield, Iowa, and Elizabeth Honke, a 5-8 defensive specialist from Atlantic, Iowa.
Harvey joined the Mustangs with freshman eligibility as a transfer from NCAA Division II Southwest Minnesota State University, where she was a redshirt this past season.
Harvey is a 2011 graduate of Clarion-Goldfield High School, where she was a two-time first-team All-North Central Conference performer. She pounded a team-high 300 kills for an average of 3.61 per game to go along with 236 digs for a norm of 2.84 per game as a senior. Harvey completed 241 of 275 serve attempts for 87.6 percent with a team-high 46 aces. She averaged 3.02 kills and 2.34 digs per game and completed 84.5 percent of her serve attempts with 37 aces as a junior.
Honke joined the Mustangs with junior eligibility from Marshalltown Community College, where she earned second-team all-region and honorable mention All-Iowa Community College Athletic Conference honors each of the past two seasons. She led Marshalltown with 588 digs for an average of 3.97 per game to go along with 24 ace serves this past season. As a freshman she amassed 689 digs for an average of 4.69 per game and had 29 ace serves.
Honke is a 2010 graduate of Atlantic High School, where she had 252 digs for an average of 2.74 per game and completed 181 of 195 serve attempts for 92.8 percent with 12 aces during her senior campaign.
The transfers will join a Morningside program that posted a 26-9 record and won Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) regular season and post-season tournament championships during the 2011 season en route to a third NAIA National Tournament appearance in the last four years.

The Mustangs won the GPAC regular season title with a 13-3 league mark and defeated Doane College 3-1 in the championship match of the GPAC’s post-season tournament. Morningside has a 145-44 record over the last five seasons for a .767 winning percentage.
Morningside had 30 block assists in a 3-1 victory against Doane College on Oct. 15 to break its school record for a four-game match. The Mustangs broke their former record of 26 block assists against South Dakota State University on Sept. 2, 1995.
Darcy Christensen, a 5-8 senior defensive specialist from Council Bluffs, Iowa, set Morningside records for digs by a libero in a three-game and four-game match with 36 digs in a 3-0 sweep of Briar Cliff University on Sept. 28 and 36 digs in a 3-1 triumph against South Dakota School of Mines and Technology on Sept. 10. She broke the former Morningside standards of 30 digs in a three-game match by Amanda Nelson against the University of Sioux Falls on Oct. 3, 2009, and 34 digs in a four-game match by Jericho Johnson against Buena Vista University on Oct. 15, 2007.
Christensen led the Mustangs with 742 digs during the 2011 season for an average of 5.66 per game. Her 742 digs and average of 5.66 digs per game were the second highest single-season marks in Morningside history.
Christensen amassed 1,255 digs over her two-year Morningside career for the second highest total in Mustang history. She averaged a school-record 5.23 digs per game over her Morningside career to break the former Mustang standard of 4.86 digs per game by Jericho Johnson from 2006-08.
Briana Schaeuble, a 6-2 junior middle blocker from Kingsley, Iowa, set a Morningside record for a four-game match with 12 block assists in the Mustangs’ 3-1 victory against Doane College on Oct. 15. She broke the former school record of 10 block assists by Jennifer Gruber against Midland Lutheran College on Sept. 16, 1992.
Schaeuble led the Mustangs with 33 solo blocks and 128 block assists for an average of 1.26 blocks per game. Her 128 block assists was the third highest single-season total in Morningside history and her average of 1.26 blocks per game ranked fourth among the Mustangs’ single-season bests. Schaeuble climbed into 16th place on Morningside’s career charts with 153 block assists and 17th with 51 solo blocks.
Monica Iverson, a 5-10 junior setter from Sioux City, led the Mustangs with 1,339 assists for an average of 10.22 per game.
Iverson raised her career total to 2,687 assists for the fifth highest total in Morningside history. She averaged 9.60 assists per game over her collegiate career for the seventh highest average in Morningside history. Iverson ranks 20th in the Mustangs’ career annals with an average of 0.46 blocks per game.
Maggie Vondrak, a 6-0 sophomore outside hitter from Sioux City, led the Mustangs’ attack with 348 kills for an average of 2.66 kills per game. She slammed 18 kills in a 3-1 loss against College of the Ozarks on Sept. 9 for the Mustangs’ top single-match kill performance of the season.
Anastasia Ott, a 5-10 junior middle blocker from Trumbull, Neb., led the Mustangs with 35 ace serves for an average of 0.28 per game.
Ott also had 100 block assists for the seventh highest single-season total in Morningside history.
Kaeli Austin, a 5-10 senior outside hitter from Sioux City, amassed 403 digs in 129 games for an average of 3.12 per game to lead the Mustangs’ non-liberos. Riley Callan, a 5-9 senior outside hitter from Ord, Neb., also averaged 3.12 digs per game with 399 digs in 128 contests.
Austin accumulated 816 digs during her four-year career for the 20th highest total in Morningside history.
Callan averaged 2.84 digs per game over her two-year Morningside career for the 12th highest average in school history.

Darcy Christensen, a 5-8 senior defensive specialist from Council Bluffs, Iowa; and Monica Iverson, a 5-10 senior setter from Sioux City, were each named to the honorable mention list of the 2011 Tachikara-NAIA All-America Volleyball Team.
Their exploits helped lead Morningside to a 26-9 record and the college’s third appearance in the NAIA Volleyball National Championship tournament in the last four years. The Mustangs were the Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) regular season and post-season tournament champions.
Christensen led the Mustangs with 742 digs for an average of 5.66 per game. She completed 699 of 729 serve reception attempts for 95.9 percent and 454 of 463 serve attempts for 98.1 percent with seven aces. Her 742 digs and average of 5.66 digs per game were the second highest single-season totals by a libero in Morningside history.
She was named the GPAC Libero of the Week three times during the regular season.
Iverson dealt 1,339 assists for an average of 10.22 per game to go along with 277 digs for an average of 2.11 per contest. She completed 512 of 540 serve attempts for 94.8 percent with 29 aces.
Iverson finished her career with 2,687 assists for the fifth highest total in Morningside history.

Kaeli Austin, Leah Nielsen, and Anastasia Ott have been named 2011 Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athletes in the sport of volleyball.
Austin, a 5-10 senior outside hitter from Sioux City, has a 3.91 cumulative grade point average (GPA) with majors in elementary education and special education.
Nielsen, a 5-9 senior defensive specialist from Sergeant Bluff, Iowa, has a 3.99 cumulative GPA with a major in mathematics teaching.
Ott, a 5-10 junior middle blocker from Trumbull, Neb., has a 3.98 cumulative GPA with a major in elementary education.
Student-athletes must be of at least junior academic status and have a minimum GPA of 3.50 in order to be eligible for Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athlete honors.

Morningside lost 25-20, 25-19, 25-27, 25-23 against 14th-ranked Vanguard University in Thursday’s action at the 2011 NAIA Volleyball National Championship tournament to finish pool play with a 0-3 record.
The Mustangs, who made their third national tournament appearance in the last four seasons, finished the campaign with a record of 26-9. The Mustangs won both the GPAC regular season and post-season tournament championships in their first season under head coach Sara Horn.
Briana Schaeuble, Maggie Vondrak, and Riley Callan each had 10 kills to lead the Mustangs’ attack in their finale, while Kaeli Austin and Anastasia Ott each added seven kills.
Morningside’s Darcy Christensen led all performers with 19 digs. Austin and Monica Iverson joined her in double figures with 13 and 11 digs, respectively.
Iverson dealt 41 assists and Schaeuble was the Mustangs’ top defender at the net with eight block assists.
Vanguard’s Jamie Heenan slammed a match-high 20 kills, including two terminations on her first four swings of the match to help the Lions race to an early 8-2 lead in the opening game. Kills by Vondrak and Callan helped the Mustangs close within 8-6. The Mustangs closed within two points on several other occasions before an Ashli Bellinger kill capped a 25-20 win for Vanguard in the opener.
The Lions first three attack attempts in the second game resulted in kills by Heenan, KaUwila Lavea, and Jessica Neves to give Vanguard an early 4-1 lead in the second game. The Lions eventually stretched their lead to 9-2. Morningside rallied and tied the score at 16-16 on a block by Schaeuble and Vondrak before Vanguard outscored the Mustangs 9-3 down the stretch.
Morningside rallied from a 23-19 deficit in their game three triumph. The Mustangs caught the Lions at 24-24, took a 26-25 lead on a Vanguard attack error, and finished the Lions off 27-25 on a kill by Vondrak.
Morningside held early leads of 7-4 and 10-7 in the fourth game and led 23-22 late after a kill by Vondrak. The Lions rallied with three straight points and scored the match winner on a combined block by Kendall Haldi and Kristen Markowitz.

Morningside’s hopes for advancing beyond pool play to this weekend’s single-elimination championship bracket at the NAIA Volleyball National Championship tournament were dashed when the Mustangs lost 25-14, 18-25, 25-23, 29-27 against 10th-ranked Southern Oregon University on Wednesday night.
The Mustangs dropped to 0-2 in pool play heading into Thursday’s 8 p.m. pool play finale against No. 14 Vanguard University. Southern Oregon and No. 3 Lee University are both 2-0 in Morningside’s pool and will advance to the single-elimination bracket.
Morningside’s Maggie Vondrak had a match-high 14 kills against Southern Oregon. She received double figure support from Kaeli Austin, who went for a double-double with 11 kills and 11 digs. Riley Callan was next with nine kills.
Darcy Christensen came up with a match-high 24 digs to pace the Mustangs’ court coverage. She was joined in double figures by Riley Callan and Monica Iverson, each with 13, and Austin with 11.
Iverson also dealt a match-high 42 assists to go along with her 13 digs.
Anastasia Ott led the Mustangs’ block with five block assists.
Morningside will take a 16-8 record into Thursday’s match against Vanguard.

For one game it looked like the nation’s second longest active winning streak could be in jeopardy, but third-ranked Lee University stormed back from an opening game loss to defeat Morningside 23-25, 25-9, 25-21, 25-18 in Tuesday’s pool play action at the NAIA Volleyball National Championship tournament at Sioux City’s Tyson Events Center/Gateway Arena.
Lee won its 25th match in a row to improve to 31-2 on the season. Morningside, which had a seven-match winning streak snapped, will take a 26-7 record into a Wednesday 8 p.m. pool play match against 10th-ranked Southern Oregon University. The top two teams from each pool will advance to a single-elimination championship bracket to be held Friday and Saturday.
The Mustangs had 34 attack errors against Lee and that was a major factor in the final outcome. Morningside finished the match with a .061 attack percentage compared to a .229 hitting proficiency for the Lady Flames.
Maggie Vondrak led the Mustangs’ attack with 13 kills, while Kaeli Austin and Riley Callan each had nine.
Darcy Christensen paced the Mustangs’ court coverage with 22 digs. Austin also had a big match with 15 digs, followed by Monica Iverson with 13 and Callan with 11.
Iverson dealt 36 assists and had two of the Mustangs’ four ace serves. Briana Schaeuble led the Mustangs’ block with three solos and one block assist.
Morningside reeled off six straight points to turn a 4-3 deficit into a 9-4 lead in its opening game victory. The Mustangs’ six-point flurry featured kills by Iverson, Vondrak, Callan, and Anastasia Ott. The Mustangs eventually pushed their lead to eight points, 17-9, after an ace serve by Austin. Lee battled back to tie the score at 21-21 and 23-23 before Iverson had an ice serve to finish off a 25-23 Mustang triumph.
The second game was all Lee, as the Lady Flames scored five consecutive points on Morningside attack errors at one stage.
Lee led 17-13 in the third game, but Morningside fought back to tie the score at 19-19 on a kill by Callan that was set up by a diving dig by Christensen. The Mustangs tied the score again at 20-20 on a kill by Vondrak before a service error and a pair of Morningside attack errors put Lee in front 23-20.
The fourth game was tied at 14-14 before Lee’s Irene Ojukwa slammed a kill that ignited a five-point Lee scoring run that gave the Lady Flames an insurmountable 19-14 advantage.

Morningside College placed four players on the 2011 All-Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) Volleyball First-Team as selected by the league’s head coaches.
The Mustangs’ first-team all-conference selections are Darcy Christensen, a 5-8 senior libero from Council Bluffs, Iowa; Monica Iverson, a 5-10 senior setter from Sioux City; Briana Schaeuble, a 6-2 junior middle blocker from Kingsley, Iowa; and Maggie Vondrak, a 6-0 sophomore outside hitter from Sioux City.
In addition to their four first-team picks, Morningside’s Sara Horn was named the 2011 Hauff Mid-America Sports/GPAC Volleyball Coach of the Year. Horn, who inherited a team that was picked for an eighth place finish in the GPAC Coaches’ Pre-Season Poll, guided the Mustangs to a 26-6 record, the GPAC regular season and post-season tournament championships, and a NAIA National Tournament berth in her first season with the team.
Christensen leads the Mustangs with 677 digs for an average of 5.69 per game and was named the GPAC Libero of the Week three times during the regular season. She has 1,190 career digs for the second highest total in Morningside history.
Iverson has dealt 1,220 assists for an average of 10.25 per game. She also has 27 ace serves and 240 digs for a norm of 2.02 digs per contest. Iverson ranks fifth in the Morningside record book with 2,568 career assists.
Schaeuble has 29 solo blocks and 117 block assists for an average of 1.26 blocks per game for one of the highest averages in Morningside history. She has pounded 274 kills for an average of 2.36 per game. Six of her 12 double figure kill performances this season have come in the Mustangs’ last eight matches.
Vondrak also came on strong over the second half of the season to amass a team-high 311 kills for an average of 2.61 per game. Vondrak has produced a double figure kill total in each of the Mustangs’ last eight matches and has averaged 3.21 kills per game during that stretch. She ranks second on the team with 29 ace serves and has 160 digs for an average of 1.34 per contest.
In addition to their four first-team selections, the Mustangs placed Riley Callan, a 5-9 senior outside hitter from Ord, Neb., on the All-GPAC Second-Team and Kaeli Austin, a 5-10 senior outside hitter from Sioux City, on the All-GPAC honorable mention list.
Callan ranks second on the team in kills and digs with 291 kills for an average of 2.51 per game and 368 digs for an average of 3.17 per game. She has 17 ace serves.
Austin has 282 kills and 364 digs for averages of 2.41 kills and 3.11 digs per contest to go along with 22 ace serves.

Morningside added the GPAC Volleyball Post-Season Tournament championship to the GPAC title it won during the regular season when the Mustangs defeated Doane College 25-16, 25-20, 19-25, 25-21 in Saturday’s title match in the Rosen Verdoorn Sports Center.
The Mustangs will take a 26-6 record and a seven-match winning streak into the NAIA National Championship Tournament to be held Nov. 29-Dec. 3 in Sioux City’s Tyson Events Center/Gateway Arena.
Maggie Vondrak and Briana Schaeuble each hammered 14 kills and Anastasia Ott joined them in double figures with 11 terminations to lead the Mustangs to their third victory over Doane this season. Kaeli Austin just missed double figures with nine kills and Riley Callan had eight.
Aside from her 11 kills, Ott also had one solo block and seven block assists.
Darcy Christensen had 19 digs to lead the Mustangs’ defensive court coverage, while Austin and Callan joined her in twin figures with 17 and 14, respectively.
Monica Iverson dealt 52 assists.

Maggie Vondrak, a 6-0 sophomore outside hitter from Sioux City, has been named the Hauff Mid-America Sports/Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) Volleyball Player of the Week after she led the Mustangs to three victories last week to secure the 2011 GPAC regular season championship.
Vondrak averaged 4.33 kills and 1.46 digs per game in the three victories and led the Mustangs in kills in all three triumphs. She had her first double-double of the season with 17 kills and 10 digs when Morningside defeated Midland University 3-2 last Saturday to wrap up the league title. Earlier in the week she had 15 kills in 3-1 wins against Dordt College and Briar Cliff University.
Vondrak has led the Mustangs in kills in each of their last four matches and has five consecutive double figure kill performances to become the team’s season’s leader with 276 kills for an average of 2.56 per game.

Morningside wrapped up the 2011 GPAC volleyball regular season championship with a 20-25, 28-26, 25-18, 26-28, 15-13 victory over Midland University on Saturday afternoon in the Rosen Verdoorn Sports Center.
The Mustangs finished their GPAC slate with a 13-3 record in their first campaign under head coach Sara Horn for a one-game advantage over runner-up Doane College (12-4), while Midland finished third at 11-5.
Morningside, which climbed to 23-6 overall, claimed its second GPAC volleyball crown since entering the league. The Mustangs were also GPAC champions in 2007 and won GPAC Post-Season Tournament titles in 2007 and 2008.
The Mustangs will go into this year’s GPAC Post-Season Tournament as the No. 1 seed and will host Concordia University in a 7:30 p.m. quarterfinal round match on Tuesday.
Maggie Vondrak and Briana Schaeuble each pounded 17 kills to lead the Mustangs’ attack against Midland. The 17 kills by Schaeuble was her career-high, while Vondrak finished just one shy of her career best. Anastasia Ott also stepped up with a career-high 15 kills, while Riley Callan added 12 kills to go along with 10 digs for her team-high 12th double-double, including her fourth in a row. Vondrak added 10 digs to her 17-kill performance to post her first career double-double as a Mustang.
Darcy Christensen led the Mustangs’ court coverage with 30 digs. Kaeli Austin also had a big performance with 20 digs. The 30 digs by Christensen was her 17th 20-plus performance of the season.
Monica Iverson dealt a match-high 58 assists and also had two of the Mustangs’ four ace serves.
Schaeuble led the Mustangs defense at the net with five block assists.

Christensen led all performers with 36 digs to match her career high. She also completed 30 of 32 serve reception attempts for 94.1 percent.
She received the GPAC Libero of the Week honor for the third time this season.
Christensen is averaging 5.76 digs per game for the Mustangs, who will take a 20-6 record into a Tuesday match at Dordt College. Morningside is in first place in the GPAC standings with a 10-3 league record.

Christensen followed that effort with 28 digs in the Mustangs’ 3-1 win against Concordia.

Kaeli Austin, a 5-10 senior outside hitter from Sioux City, has been named the Hauff Mid-America Sports/Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) Volleyball Player of the Week after she helped lead the Mustangs to a pair of victories against Dakota Wesleyan University and nationally ranked Doane College.
Austin averaged 2.67 kills and 2.17 digs per game and had only one attack error in the Mustangs’ two triumphs to finish the week with a .375 hitting percentage.
She led the Mustangs’ attack with 10 kills to go along with seven digs in their 3-0 sweep of Dakota Wesleyan on Sept. 21 in Mitchell, S.D. Austin contributed six kills, six digs, and two ace serves in Morningside’s 3-0 home court triumph against 11th-ranked Doane on Sept. 23.
The 10 kills against Dakota Wesleyan was Austin’s team-high ninth double figure kill performance of the season. She is the Mustangs’ season’s leader with an average of 2.62 kills per game.
Morningside is off to a 3-1 start in the GPAC and will take an overall record of 13-4 into a match at city rival Briar Cliff University on Wednesday.

Morningside opened the GPAC portion of its volleyball schedule in a big way when the Mustangs knocked off three-time defending champion Northwestern in five sets on Sept. 14 in the Rosen Verdoorn Sports Center to snap the Red Raiders’ 58-match winning streak in regular season GPAC competition.
The Mustangs’ 25-20, 23-25, 24-26, 25-20, 15-13 triumph marked Northwestern’s first loss in a regular season league match since it was swept 3-0 by Dordt on Oct. 3, 2007.
Wednesday’s victory marked the second time Morningside has ended a conference winning streak that extended into its fourth season. The Mustangs won a five-set match against Dordt on Sept. 5, 2006, in Sioux City to end the Defenders’ 55-match GPAC winning streak.
Morningside displayed a balanced attack in its win against Northwestern with five players posting double figure kill totals. Briana Schaeuble led the way with a career-high 15 kills, followed by Kaeli Austin with 12, Anastasia Ott with 11, Riley Callan with 11, and Maggie Vondrak with 10. Mustang setter Monica Iverson just missed double figures with eight kills to go along with 49 assists.
The Mustangs also had some big dig totals. Senior libero Darcy Christensen led the way with 34 digs, while Callan came up with 33 digs to finish one shy of a school-record for a non-libero. Austin also had a big night with 22 digs, followed by Iverson with 13 and Leah Nielsen with nine.
Ott contributed four of the Mustangs’ seven ace serves.
The victory raised the Mustangs’ record to 11-3 heading into a Saturday road match at Midland.
Rylee Hulstein had 13 kills, Kaitlin Floerchinger had 34 assists, and Alexis Bart had 33 digs for Northwestern, which saw its record drop to 5-9.

Christensen had 105 digs for an average of 6.18 per game in the Mustangs’ five matches last week to help the Mustangs go 4-1 to raise their season’s record to 8-1. She had 60 digs in the Mustangs’ last two matches of the week, a 3-1 loss against Saint Xavier University and a 3-1 win against Davenport University, for an average of 7.50 digs per contest.
Her best effort of the week was a 32-dig performance against Saint Xavier to finish just two shy of the Morningside school record for a libero in a four-game match.
Aside from her 105 digs, Christensen had only one error in 54 serve reception attempts and completed 36 of 38 serve attempts for 94.7 percent with two aces.
Morningside will compete in the Hastings College Quality Inn Classic this Friday and Saturday in Hastings, Neb.
