Mustangs Shock No. 1-Ranked Fresno Pacific In National Tourney Finale

After disappointing losing efforts in their first two matches that eliminated Morningside from advancing beyond the pool play level of the NAIA Volleyball National Tournament, the 12th-ranked Mustangs bowed out with one of their greatest victories in school history.

The Mustangs stormed back from a 2-1 set deficit to stun No. 1-ranked Fresno Pacific University 25-20, 16-25, 12-25, 25-18, 15-10 on Thursday in Sioux City’s Tyson Events Center/Gateway Arena to hand the reigning NAIA National Champions their first loss of the season and only their second setback in the last two years.

Morningside finished the campaign with a 37-6 record for its most wins in school history, while the Sunbirds advance with a 32-1 record into a two-day single-elimination bracket tourney that will start Friday.

Addi Radke slammed 14 kills to lead a group of four Mustang attackers in double figures. Jamie Vander Kooi was right behind with 13 kills to go along with 17 digs for her team-high 24th double-double of the season. Amber Jarzynka and Emily Christen added 11 and 10 kills, respectively.

Jericho Johnson paced the Mustangs’ court coverage with 21 digs, while Vander Kooi (17), Kali Angerman (13), and Catie Bobier (10) also had double figure totals.

Angerman dealt 43 assists, Vander Kooi had two solo blocks, and Christen had the Mustangs’ only ace serve of the night.

Fresno Pacific’s Thais Julio slammed a match-high 19 kills and the Sunbirds also had match-high performances from Tiffany Marinos with 24 digs, Tarin Tartaglia with 59 assists, and Fabiana Leomil with three ace serves. Tartaglia took over at setter for the Sunbirds in place of Shu Liu, the 2008 Golden State Athletic Conference Player of the Year and last year’s NAIA Player of the Year, who was held out of the match for injury precautions.

Morningside looked like a different team from the one that had lost against Point Loma Nazarene and Black Hills State the previous two nights when it led wire-to-wire to take the opening set. Morningside’s court coverage neutralized the potent Sunbirds’ attack as the Mustangs came up with a whopping 36 digs, including 12 by Johnson. Vander Kooi and Radke supplied most of the punch for the Mustangs’ offensive attack. Vander Kooi slammed six kills, including two in a row when the Mustangs opened up a 21-14 advantage and another that stopped a Fresno Pacific rally after the Sunbirds had closed within 22-18. Radke’s fifth kill of the contest put the Mustangs up 24-18 and the Mustangs scored the set-winner when the Sunbirds were whistled for a net violation.

After their brilliant defensive display in the opener, the Mustangs came up with only seven digs in a second set where Fresno Pacific attacked at a .448 clip. The Mustangs tied the score at 10-10 on a kill by Radke before Ke Ke Wang had two kills and a solo block to help the Sunbirds open a 16-11 advantage. The Mustangs crept within 19-16 after a kill by Christen before the Sunbirds eventually finished things off on a kill by Lisa Shilling.

Fresno Pacific continued to roll in a third set where the Mustangs had more attack errors than kills (7-6). Leading 16-9, the Sunbirds opened an insurmountable 21-9 advantage when Leomil had two aces during a five-point service run.

Morningside rebounded with an impressive showing in the fourth set and used kills by Radke and Jarzynka and an ace serve by Christen to take an early 4-1 lead. The Mustangs took the lead for good on a kill by Radke to go up 11-10. The Sunbirds had an uncharacteristic eight attack errors in the set, including three critical misfires down the stretch that accounted for the Mustangs’ 21st, 22nd, and 24th points before Vander Kooi slammed a kill to finish the Sunbirds off.

The Fresno State attack continued to sputter in the deciding fifth set when the Sunbirds had more attack errors than kills (7-6), including four consecutive errors that helped the Mustangs rally from a 6-3 deficit to go up 8-6. Kills by Julio and Tartaglia tied the score at eight before another misplaced Sunbird spike put the Mustangs ahead for good at 10-9. From there the Mustangs’ attack took over with an impressive finishing flurry that featured a kill from Vander Kooi and two kills each from Christen and Radke, who supplied the match winner.
