Angerman Receves MVP Award

Photo of Kali AngermanKali Angerman, a 5-9 junior setter from Sioux City, received the Morningside College volleyball team’s Most Valuable Player award at the Mustangs’ post-season awards banquet on Friday night.


Angerman set Morningside single-season records with 1,710 assists and 101 ace serves for school-record averages of 14.02 assists and 0.83 ace serves per game during the 2007 season.


Angerman, who joined the Mustangs this season as a transfer from Barton County Community College, also received the Mustangs’ Top Newcomer and Top Server awards.


Other award winners were:


Most Improved Award – Catie Bobier, a 5-10 junior outside hitter from Westfield, Iowa.


Hustle Award – Megan Tuttle, a 5-7 junior defensive specialist from Sioux City.


Best Defensive Player Award – Jericho Johnson, a 5-5 sophomore defensive specialist from Hastings, Neb.


Best Offensive Player Award – Amber Jarzynka, a 5-11 junior middle blocker from Bennington, Neb.


Top Freshman Award – Kristen Hendrix, a 5-11 freshman middle blocker from Treynor, Iowa.
Top Passer Award – Johnson.


Top Hitter Award– Jarzynka.
Top Blocker Award – Cassie Cheever, a 6-0 senior middle blocker from South Sioux City, Neb.

Morningside had one of its most successful seasons in school history in 2007 by posting a 33-4 record and winning the Great Plains Athletic Conference’s regular season and post-season tournament championships.

 

Mustangs Join The Ranks Of NAIA National Powers In 2007

Morningside College’s volleyball team joined the ranks of the NAIA national powers during the 2007 season when the Mustangs posted a 33-4 record and were ranked 15th nationally in the final NAIA poll. The Mustangs set a school record for winning percentage at .892 and opened the campaign with 15 straight victories for the most consecutive wins in school history. Morningside was the Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) regular season champion with a 14-2 league mark as well as the GPAC’s post-season tournament champion.

Mustangs Break Several Team Records
Morningside broke several team records during the 2007 season. The Mustangs set school records with 2,756 digs, 2,121 kills, and 1,942 assists for school-record averages of 21.53 digs, 16.57 kills, and 15.17 assists per game.


The Mustangs set match records with a .578 attack percentage against Dana College on Sept. 28 and 154 digs against Briar Cliff University on Oct. 30. Morningside broke three-game match records with 70 assists and 73 digs against Nebraska Wesleyan University on Sept. 29 and set a new four-game match record with a .412 attack percentage against Grinnell College on Sept. 15. Morningside tied a five-game match record with 11 solo blocks in the Oct. 30 win against Briar Cliff.

Angerman Breaks Setting And Ace Serve Records

Angerman shattered the former Morningside single-season standards of 1,563 assists by Brenna Larsen in 2001, 80 ace serves by Lori Van Meeteren in 2003, 11.92 assists per game by Larsen in 2000, and 0.57 ace serves per game by Kate Ankrum in 1994.


Angerman also set a new Morningside single-match record with 81 assists in the Mustangs’ Oct. 30 win against Briar Cliff and set a new Morningside three-game match record with 67 assists against Nebraska Wesleyan on Sept. 29.


She already ranks sixth in Morningside history with her 1,710 career assists from this past season.

Johnson Breaks Libero Dig Records
Jericho Johnson, a 5-5 sophomore defensive specialist from Hastings, Neb., broke all of the Mustangs’ libero records during the 2007 season. She came up with 760 digs for an average of 6.23 per game to break the former Mustang standards of 559 digs and 4.74 digs per game by B.J. Rohlena in 2005.


Johnson had a Morningside-record 57 digs in the Mustangs’ Oct. 30 win against Briar Cliff. She also set school records for a three-game match with 27 digs against Nebraska Wesleyan on Sept 29 and for a four-game match with 34 digs against Buena Vista University on Oct. 15.

Jarzynka Attacks At Record Clip
Photo of Amber JarzynkaAmber Jarzynka, a 5-11 junior middle blocker from Bennington, Neb., slammed a team-high 522 kills and had only 96 attack errors in 1,015 attempts to set a new Morningside single-season record with a .420 attack percentage. She shattered the former Morningside record of .394 by Karmen Fykstra in 1992. Jarzynka’s 522 kills was the third highest single-season total in Morningside history and her average of 4.14 kills per game ranked fifth in the Mustangs’ annals. Jarzynka had the Mustangs’ top single-match kill performance of the season with 27 in their Oct. 30 win against Briar Cliff.

DeStigter Breaks Single-Match Dig Record
Cara DeStigter, a 5-11 junior outside hitter from Sioux City, came up with 34 digs in the Mustangs’ 3-2 win against Briar Cliff on Sept. 12 to break the Mustangs’ single-match dig record for a non-libero. She broke the former record of 32 digs by Tracie McCord against the University of Minnesota-Morris in 1998.
DeStigter ranks seventh in Morningside history with 1,238 career kills and ninth with 1,100 career digs.

 

Cheever Climbs Career Charts
Photo of Cassie CheeverCassie Cheever, a 6-0 senior middle blocker from South Sioux City, Neb., slammed 438 kills this season to finish her career with 1,662 kills for the second highest total in Morningside history. She ranks third in the Mustangs’ annals with 125 career solo blocks, fourth with 325 career block assists, and ninth with 129 career ace serves.

Bobier Excels In Dig Department
Catie Bobier, a 5-10 junior outside hitter from Westfield, Iowa, had 452 digs during the 2007 season for the seventh highest single-season total in Morningside history. Her average of 3.65 digs per game ranked sixth among the Mustangs’ single-season bests. Bobier moved into 10th place in Morningside history with 1,073 career digs.

 

 

 

 

Jarzynka A Third-Team All-American

Photo of Amber JarzynkaAmber Jarzynka, a 5-11 junior middle blocker from Bennington, Neb., has been named to the third team of the 2007 NAIA All-America Volleyball Team.


Jarzynka hammered 522 kills for an average of 4.14 per game and set a new Morningside single-season record for hitting percentage at .420 this past season. Her 522 kills was the third highest single-season total in Morningside history and her average of 4.14 kills per game ranked fifth in the Mustangs’ record book.


She posted a double figure kill total in 31 of the Mustangs’ 37 matches and had the team’s top kill performance of the season with 27 in Morningside’s 3-2 win against Briar Cliff on Oct. 30. She also averaged 0.83 blocks per game.


Jarzynka joined the Mustangs this year as a transfer from Bellevue University, where she earned NAIA honorable mention All-America honors in 2006.


Jarzynka becomes the third Morningside volleyball player to be named a NAIA All-American in volleyball. Jennifer Gruber was a second-team All-American and Brenna Larsen was a third-team All-American in 2002.


Morningside posted a 33-4 record during the 2007 season and was the Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) regular season and post-season tournament champion.

Four Mustangs Named NAIA Scholar-Athletes

Cara DeStigter, Megan Tuttle, Kristen Westergaard, and Katie Kotlik have been named 2007 Daktronics NAIA Scholar-Athletes in the sport of volleyball.


Kotlik was also named a Daktronics NAIA Scholar-Athlete in 2006.


DeStigter, a 5-11 junior outside hitter from Sioux City, has a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.98 with majors in chemistry and biology. DeStigter averaged 3.33 kills and 2.46 digs per game and had 11 ace serves this season en route to second-team All-Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) honors.


Tuttle, a 5-7 junior defensive specialist from Sioux City, has a 3.83 cumulative GPA with a major in biology. She averaged 3.20 digs per game and had 16 ace serves this season.


Westergaard, a 5-11 junior outside hitter from Mapleton, Iowa, has a 4.00 cumulative GPA with a major in biology. She averaged 0.92 kills and 1.08 digs per game during the 2007 season.

Kotlik, a 5-8 senior setter from Bellevue, Neb., has a 3.91 cumulative GPA with majors in political science and Spanish. She averaged 8.25 assists and 1.50 digs per game.


Daktronics NAIA Scholar-Athletes must be of at least junior academic status and have a cumulative GPA of 3.50 or higher.


Morningside posted a 33-4 record during the 2007 season and was the GPAC’s regular season champion and post-season tournament champion.

Mustangs Ranked 15th In Final NAIA Poll

NAIA LogoMorningside College is ranked 15th nationally in the final NAIA regular season volleyball poll released on Nov. 14.


The Mustangs, the Great Plains Athletic Conference regular season and post-season tournament champions, will take a 33-2 record into this weekend’s NAIA Region III Championships slated for Friday and Saturday at Sioux Falls Christian High School in Sioux Falls, S.D.


Morningside is in its first season under head coach Rick Pruett, who inherited a team that had finished 18-17 in 2006.

Angerman Is National Setter Of The Week Again

Angerman averaged 15.33 assists per game to go along with 19 digs and seven ace serves last week when the Mustangs swept Dordt College and Northwestern College by 3-0 scores en route to the Great Plains Athletic Conference’s post-season tournament championship.


Angerman received the NAIA National Setter of the Week honor for the third time this season.


Morningside has a 33-2 record and is the No. 3 seed for the NAIA Region IIII Championships to be held this Friday and Saturday at Sioux Falls, S.D.

 

 

Mustangs Sweep Weekly Volleyball Awards

Morningside College’s Amber Jarzynka, Kali Angerman, and Jericho Johnson are this week’s NAIA Region III and Hauff Mid-America Sports/Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) Volleyball Player, Setter, and Libero of the Week after the Mustangs won the championship of last week’s GPAC Tournament with 3-0 wins against Dordt College on Wednesday and Northwestern College on Saturday.


Jarzynka, a 5-11 junior middle blocker from Bennington, Neb., averaged fives kills per game with a .303 hitting percentage.


Angerman, a 5-9 junior setter from Sioux City, averaged 15.33 assists per game to go along with 19 digs and seven ace serves.


Johnson, a 5-5 sophomore defensive specialist from Hastings, Neb., averaged 4.17 digs per game and completed 50 of 52 serve reception attempts for 96.2 percent.


Morningside has a 33-2 record and is the No. 3 seed for the NAIA Region IIII Championships to be held this Friday and Saturday at Sioux Falls, S.D.

 

Mustangs Sweep Northwestern In GPAC Title Match

Morningside’s volleyball team added the 2007 GPAC Tournament Championship to its list of accomplishments this season when the Mustangs swept Northwestern College 3-0 in Saturday’s title match in the Rosen Verdoorn Sports Center.

The victory avenged a 3-1 loss the Mustangs had suffered against Northwestern in the Rosen Verdoorn Sports Center earlier this season on Oct. 19. The win was the 200th career coaching triumph for Rick Pruett, who is in his first season with the Mustangs.

The Mustangs, who had already won the GPAC’s regular season championship, will take a 33-2 record into the NAIA Region III Championships slated for Nov. 16-17 at Sioux Falls, S.D.

Amber Jarzynka pounded 14 kills to lead all performers, while Cassie Cheever and Cara DeStigter each added 11 kills and Catie Bobier just missed double figures with nine kills.

Kali Angerman helped ignite the Mustangs’ attack with 48 assists to go along with 11 digs and a match-high three ace serves.

Jericho Johnson led the Mustangs with 14 digs.

DeStigter Named To Academic All-District First-Team

Photo of Cara DeStigterCara DeStigter, a junior outside hitter from Sioux City, has been named to the first-team of the 2007 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District VII College Division Volleyball Team as selected by College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).


As a first-team all-district selection, DeStigter will go on the national ballot for the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Team.


She has a 3.98 cumulative grade point average (GPA) with majors in chemistry and biology. She is averaging 3.41 kills and 2.54 digs per game and leads the Mustangs with 10 kill/dig double-doubles for the season.


Student-athletes must be of at least sophomore status and have a cumulative GPA of 3.20 or higher to be eligible for ESPN The Magazine academic honors.

Angerman has been one of the premier setters in the nation with an average of 14.06 assists per game. With 1,519 assists, Angerman is closing in on the Morningside single-season record of 1,563 assists by Brenna Larsen in 2001. Angerman is on pace to shatter Larsen’s single-season Morningside record of 11.92 assists per game during the 2000 campaign. Aside from her setting exploits, Angerman is also averaging 3.08 digs per contest to go along with a school-record 90 ace serves. Her average of 0.83 ace serves per game is on pace to break the Morningside single-season record of 0.57 ace serves per game by Kate Ankrum in 1994.

The three Mustang standouts have helped lead Morningside to a 31-2 record and the GPAC championship this season after the team had been tabbed for a seventh place league finish in the GPAC coaches’ pre-season poll.

She is the Mustangs’ top blocking force at the net with 42 solo blocks and 66 block assists for an average of 0.97 blocks per game. Cheever is the second most prolific attacker in Morningside history with 1,625 career kills. She ranks third in the Mustangs’ record book with 122 career solo blocks and fourth with 316 career block assists.


Jarzynka was the most dominate attacker in the GPAC this season with a .442 hitting percentage and an average of 4.13 kills per game. She has a team-high 27 double figure kill performances, including the Mustangs’ top individual kill performance of the season with 27 terminations in the Mustangs’ 3-2 win at city rival Briar Cliff on Oct. 30.


In addition to their three first-team selections, the Mustangs also placed Jericho Johnson, a 5-5 sophomore libero from Hastings, Neb., on the All-GPAC second team and Cara DeStigter, a 5-11 junior outside hitter from Sioux City, was named to the All-GPAC honorable mention list.


Johnson has a Morningside’s libero-record 685 digs this season and her average of 6.34 digs per game is on pace to shatter the existing Morningside libero record of 4.74 digs per game by B.J. Rohlena in 2005. Johnson set a Morningside libero single-match record with 57 digs in the Mustangs’ 3-0 win at Briar Cliff on Oct. 30. Johnson also set new Morningside libero records with 27digs in a three-game match against Nebraska Wesleyan University on Sept. 28 and 34 digs in a four-game match against Buena Vista University on Oct. 15.


DeStigter is averaging 3.45 kills and 2.59 digs per game and is the Mustangs’ co-leader with 10 kill/dig double-doubles. DeStigter ranks eighth in Morningside history with 1,204 career kills and ninth with 1,080 career digs.

Kali Angerman, a 5-9 junior setter from Sioux City, and Jericho Johnson, a 5-5 sophomore defensive specialist from Hastings, Neb., have been named both the NAIA Region III and the Hauff Mid-America Sports/Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) Volleyball Setter and Libero of the Week after they led the Mustangs to a 2-0 record last week.


Angerman averaged 15.25 assists and 3.63 digs per game in the Mustangs’ two contests. She broke the Mustangs’ single-match record with 81 assists to go along with a season’s high 19 digs in the Mustangs’ 3-2 win at Briar Cliff on Oct. 30 when Morningside wrapped up the GPAC’s regular season championship.


Johnson averaged 9.13 digs per game in the Mustangs’ two triumphs. She had a school-record 57 digs in the Mustangs’ 3-2 win at Briar Cliff to shatter her previous record of 39 digs against Northwestern College earlier this season.


Angerman is averaging 14.06 assists and 3.08 digs per game and has a school-record 90 ace serves. With 1,519 assists, Angerman is 44 assists shy of the Morningside single-season record of 1,563 assists by Brenna Larsen in 2001. Johnson is averaging 6.34 digs per game and with 685 digs has already broken the former Morningside libero record of 559 digs in a season by B.J. Rohlena in 2005.


Angerman has been named the GPAC Setter of the Week six times and the NAIA Region III Setter of the Week five times this season. Johnson has been the NAIA Region III Libero of the Week three times.

 

Mustangs Wrap Up GPAC Championship

Morningside put the finishing touches on the 2007 GPAC volleyball championship with a come-from-behind 30-28, 24-30, 25-30, 33-31, 15-11 victory at city rival Briar Cliff on Tuesday.

The win enabled the Mustangs to finish the regular season with a 30-2 record, including a 14-2 mark in the GPAC for sole possession of first place. The Mustangs finished one victory ahead of runner-up Northwestern, which won its rivalry match at Dordt College on Tuesday to finish with a 13-3 record in the GPAC.

Things didn't look good for the Mustangs when they were down two games to one and trailed 16-9 in the fourth game. But the Mustangs rallied and eventually caught the Chargers at 23-23 before going on to win the match.

The Mustangs pounded a season's high 90 kills at the Chargers and set a school record with 154 digs and a five-game match record with 11 solo blocks.

Mustang libero Jericho Johnson led the way with a whopping 57 digs to shatter her former school-record total of 39 digs against Northwestern earlier this season. Megan Tuttle was next with a career-high 26 digs, followed by Catie Bobier with 22, Kali Angerman with 19, and Lindsay Hansen with a career-high 15 digs.

Angerman also gave the Mustangs a record breaking performance with 81 assists. She broke the former Morningside single-match record of 79 assists by Kate Ankrum against the Universtiy of Nebraska-Kearney during the 1996 season.

Amber Jarzynka and Cassie Cheever were the main recipients of Angerman's record setting performance. Jarzynka pounded a season's high 27 kills for the Mustangs' highest individual total of the season, while Cheever was right behind with a season's high 23 kills. Bobier added 13 kills, while Andra Pedersen and Cara DeStigter each had 11.

Bobier's combination of 13 kills and 22 digs was her 10th double-double of the season to tie DeStigter for team honors.

Pedersen led the Mustangs with three solo blocks and a block assist.

Angerman Named Setter Of The Week

Angerman averaged 13.27 assists per game in the Mustangs’ three victories last week. She also averaged 2.82 digs per game and had seven ace serves to raise her season’s total to 85 ace serves for a new school record. Angerman broke the former Morningside single-season standard of 80 ace serves by Lori Van Meeteren in 2003.
She had 59 assists and 15 digs when Morningside defeated Hastings College 3-2 on Oct. 26 in a battle for sole possession of first place in the GPAC standings.


Angerman received the GPAC Setter of the Week honor for the fifth time and the NAIA Region III honor for the fourth time this season. Angerman was this season’s NAIA National Setter of the Week for matches from Oct. 8 to 14.

 

 

Angerman Is NAIA National Setter Of The Week

Angerman averaged 14.00 assists per game to help the Mustangs go 5-0 last week with victories against the University of Sioux Falls, Jamestown College, Valley City State University, William Penn University, and Mayville State University. She also had 50 digs and 19 ace serves for averages of 2.94 digs and 1.12 ace serves per game.


She had seven ace serves in the Mustangs’ 3-1 win against Mayville State to finish one shy of a school record for a four-game match. Angerman also had 52 assists and 17 digs against Mayville State.


She had 58 assists in Morningside’s 3-1 win against Jamestown for her highest assist total of the week.


Angerman, who joined the Mustangs this year as a transfer from Barton County Community College, has dealt 1,158 assists for an average of 14.12 per game so far this season. She also has 248 digs and 76 ace serves for averages of 3.02 digs and 0.93 ace serves per game.


With her 76 ace serves, Angerman is only four shy of the Morningside single-season record of 80 aces by Lori Van Meeteren in 2003. Her averages of 14.12 assists and 0.93 ace serves per game are on pace to shatter the current Morningside standards of 11.92 assists per game by Brenna Larsen in 2000 and 0.57 ace serves per game by Kate Ankrum in 1994.


Angerman’s exploits have helped lead the Mustangs to a 25-1 record and a No. 12 NAIA national ranking. The Mustangs are alone atop the Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) standings with a 9-1 league mark.

 

Angerman And Johnson Receive Weekly Honors

Kali Angerman, a 5-9 junior setter from Sioux City, has been named the NAIA Region III and the Hauff Mid-America Sports/Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) Volleyball Setter of the Week after she helped lead the Mustangs to a 5-0 record last week.


In addition, the Mustangs’ Jericho Johnson, a 5-5 sophomore defensive specialist from Hastings, Neb., has been named the Hauff Mid-America Sports/GPAC Volleyball Libero of the Week.


Angerman averaged 14.00 assists per game in Mustang triumphs against the University of Sioux Falls, Jamestown College, Valley City State University, William Penn University, and Mayville State University. She also had 50 digs and 19 ace serves for averages of 2.94 digs and 1.12 ace serves per game. Johnson had 87 digs in the Mustangs’ five victories for an average of 5.44 per game and completed 87 of 95 serve reception attempts for 91.6 percent.


Angerman received GPAC Setter of the Week honors for the fourth time and the NAIA Region III honor for the third time this season. Johnson received the NAIA Region III Libero of the Week award for the second time this season.

Jarzynka Is Region III And GPAC Player Of The Week

Photo of Amber JarzynkaAmber Jarzynka, a 5-11 junior middle blocker from Bennington, Neb., has been named the NAIA Region III and the Hauff Mid-America Sports/Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) Volleyball Player of the Week after she led the Mustangs to a pair of victories last week.


Jarzynka averaged 5.83 kills per game with a hitting percentage of .571 in the Mustangs’ victories against Mount Marty College and 23rd-ranked Doane College. She had only three attack errors in the two contests.


Jaryznka pounded a match-high 16 kills and had only two attack errors in 26 attempts for a .538 hitting percentage in a 3-0 win against Mount Marty. She had a match-high 19 kills and only one attack error in 30 attempts for a .600 hitting percentage in the Mustangs’ 3-0 sweep of Doane.


For the season she is averaging 4.09 kills per game with a .473 attack percentage to lead the Mustangs in both categories. Jarzynka has averaged a whopping 5.83 kills per game with a .607 hitting percentage over the Mustangs’ last four outings.

Angerman Repeats As Setter Of The Week

Kali Angerman, a junior setter from Sioux City, has been named the NAIA Region III and Hauff Mid-America Sports/Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) Volleyball Setter of the Week for her performances from Sept. 24 to 30.

She received the award for the second week in a row and for the third time this season.


Angerman dealt 157 assists in the Mustangs’ three matches last week for an average of 17.44 per game. She broke Morningside’s school record for a three-game match with 67 assists in the Mustangs’ 3-0 win against Nebraska Wesleyan University on Sept. 29 at Lincoln.


She also had 28 digs and four ace serves last week for averages of 3.11 digs and 0.44 ace serves per contest.


Angerman’s exploits have played a pivotal role in the Mustangs’ 17-1 record this season. She ranks second nationally in the NAIA with an average of 14.07 assists per game. Her current averages of 14.07 assists per game and 0.88 ace serves per game would shatter the existing Morningside records of 11.92 assists per game by Brenna Larsen in 2000 and 0.57 ace serves per game by Kate Ankrum in 1994.

Angerman Earns Setter Honors Again

Angerman dealt 41 assists to go along with nine digs and eight ace serves in the Morningside triumph. She finished just one ace serve shy of the Mustangs’ single-match record.


Angerman received the NAIA Region III and GPAC Setter of the Week honor for the second time this season.


She is averaging 13.43 assists and 0.96 ace serves per game so far this season to put her on pace to shatter the Morningside single-season marks of 11.92 assists and 0.57 ace serves per game.

 

Cheever Is GPAC Player Of The Week

Photo of Cassie CheeverCassie Cheever, a 6-0 senior middle blocker from South Sioux City, Neb., has been named the Hauff Mid-America Sports/Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) Volleyball Player of the Week after her performance in the Mustangs’ 3-2 upset victory at 21st-ranked Northwestern College on Sept. 5 at Orange City, Iowa.


Cheever pounded 22 kills and had only three attack errors in 43 attempts for a .442 hitting percentage. She also had three ace serves, three solo blocks, and four digs to help the Mustangs improve to 10-0 on the season for their best start in school history.


Cheever is averaging 3.36 kills and a team-high 1.00 blocks per game so far this season. She has moved into fifth place in the Morningside record book with 1,335 career kills.

In addition, the Mustangs’ Jericho Johnson, a 5-5 sophomore defensive specialist from Hastings, Neb., was named the NAIA Region III Libero of the Week.


Their exploits have helped lead Morningside to a 9-0 record for the college’s best start in school history.


Angerman averaged 13.29 assists per game in the Mustangs’ victories against the University of Sioux Falls, Daemen College, Embry-Riddle University, Mountain State University, and Trevecca Nazarene University. She also had 44 digs and 16 ace serves for averages of 2.75 digs and 1.00 ace serves per game.


Johnson averaged 5.50 digs per game and completed 98 of 100 serve reception attempts. She had a season’s high 26 digs in the Mustangs’ win against Embry-Riddle.
