Dave Nash has been named the 2009 Hauff Mid-America Sports/Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) Women’s Cross Country Coach of the Year.
Nash led the Mustangs to a third place finish at last Saturday’s GPAC Cross Country Championships in Fremont, Neb., where the Mustangs qualified as a team for the upcoming NAIA Cross Country National Championships for the first time in school history. Morningside was ranked 12th nationally in the final regular season NAIA poll.
In addition to Nash’s honor, the Mustangs’ Erin Keitges, a senior from Allen, Neb., and Kara Nelson, a junior from Cherokee, Iowa, were each named to the All-GPAC Women’s Cross Country Team.
Keitges had the Mustangs’ top individual finish at the GPAC Championships with a fourth place time of 18:34.32, while Nelson was right behind in fifth place with a time of 18:36.60.
Keitges earned All-GPAC honors for the fourth time in her career, while Nelson received the honor for the third time.
The 2009 NAIA Cross Country National Championships will be held Saturday, Nov. 21, at Fort Vancouver Historical Site in Vancouver, Wash.

Morningside’s women’s cross country team qualified for the 2009 NAIA Cross Country National Championships to be held Nov. 21 in Vancouver, Wash., with a third place finish at Saturday’s Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) Championships in Fremont, Neb.
The Mustang women, ranked 12th nationally in the latest NAIA ranking, qualified as a team for the NAIA National Championships for the first time in school history.
Defending GPAC champion Nebraska Wesleyan University scored 29 points to hold on to its league title. Concordia University was second with 64 points and Morningside finished third with 81 tallies. All 13 schools in the GPAC competed in the event.
Erin Keitges, a senior from Allen, Nebraska, had the Mustangs’ top individual finish with a fourth place time of 18:34.32 over the 5k course and teammate Kara Nelson, a junior from Cherokee, Iowa, was right behind with the fifth place time of 18:36.60.
The other runners who figured in the Mustangs’ team score were Lydia Ford, a sophomore from Vermillion, S.D., with the 17th place time of 19:15.59; Tabitha Shepherd, a freshman from Corning, Iowa, with the 20th place time of 19:22.71; and Nicole Seier, a freshman from Lincoln, Neb., with the 35th place time of 19:52.12.
Morningside finished in seventh place in the men’s team standings. The Mustangs’ top finisher was Brian Gesink, a junior from Sioux Center, Iowa, who finished 31st with a time of 26:57.50 over the 8k course.

Morningside has qualified for the upcoming NAIA Women's Cross Country National Championships for the first time in school history after the Mustangs finished third at the Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) Cross Country Championships. The NAIA National Championships will be held Saturday, Nov. 21, in Vancouver, Wash.
Morningside is one of two teams from the Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) ranked in this week’s NAIA Top 25. Concordia University is ranked eighth.

Keitges helped lead the Mustangs to their third straight meet title when they captured the team championship at last Saturday’s Briar Cliff Invitational held at Adams Nature Preserve. The Mustangs, who were also the team champions at this year’s Grand View University Invitational and the Doane College Dean White Invitational, are ranked 14th nationally in the NAIA.
Keitges finished third at the Briar Cliff Invitational with a time of 18:07.92 over the 5k course for the second fastest time in Morningside history.
Morningside will compete in the Mount Marty College Invitational on Oct. 24 at Yankton, S.D.

Morningside College’s women’s cross country team won its third meet in a row when they triumphed in the Briar Cliff University Invitational held Saturday at Adams Nature Preserve.
The Mustangs, ranked 17th nationally in the latest NAIA poll, scored 40 points for a 47-point cushion over runner-up Doane College to reign over an 11-team field. Morningside had triumphed at the Grand View University Invitational and the Doane Dean White Invitational in their previous two outings.
Morningside was led by Kara Nelson, a junior from Cherokee, Iowa; and Erin Keitges, a senior from Allen, Neb., who finished second and third with times of 18:06.28 and 18:07.92 over the 5k course for the two fastest women’s cross country times in Morningside history.
Morningside’s Jessica Clark, a sophomore from Mondamin, Iowa, also had a top 10 finish with the 10th place time of 19:00.08.
Morningside finished sixth in the 12-team men’s standings. The Mustangs’ top finisher was Brian Gesink, a junior from Sioux Center, Iowa, who finished ninth with a time of 26:12.35 over the 8k course.

Morningside College’s Taylor Chapman, a freshman from Spencer, Iowa; and Kara Nelson, a junior from Cherokee, Iowa, have been named the Hauff Mid-America Sports/Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) Men’s and Women’s Cross Country Runners of the Week for Sept. 28 to Oct. 4.
Chapman was the men’s individual runner-up at last Friday’s Grand View University Viking Invitational with a time of 26:49 over the 8k course to lead Morningside to the team championship.
Nelson was the women’s runner-up at the Viking Invitational with a time of 18:55 over the 5k course to lead the Mustangs to the team championship. The Morningside women won their second meet in a row after they had triumphed at the previous week’s Doane College Dean White Invitational.
Nelson received the GPAC Runner of the Week award for the third time this season.
Morningside will compete in this Saturday’s Briar Cliff Invitational.

Morningside College finished in first place in both the men’s and women’s team standings at the Grand View University Viking Invitational cross country meet held Friday at Ewing Park in Des Moines, Iowa.
The Mustangs were especially dominant in the women’s division, where Morningside had six of the top eight finishers and scored 20 points to reign over a five-team field. Morningside scored 46 points to top a field of nine teams in the men’s competition.
Kara Nelson, a junior from Cherokee, Iowa, was the women’s individual runner-up with a time of 18:55 over the 5k course. Erin Keitges, a senior from Allen, Neb., was third with a time of 19:20; Lydia Ford, a sophomore from Vermillion, S.D., was fourth in 19:53; Tabitha Shepherd, a freshman from Corning, Iowa, was fifth in 19:55; Jessica Clark, a sophomore from Mondamin, Iowa, was sixth in 20:04; and Nicole Seier, a freshman from Lincoln, Neb., was eighth in 20:27.
Taylor Chapman, a freshman from Spencer, Iowa, was the individual runner-up in the men’s 8k race with a time of 26:49. Teammate Grant Aden, a freshman from Syracuse, Neb., also cracked the top 10 with the seventh place time of 27:51. The other runners who figured in the Mustangs’ team score were Alex Weborg, a senior from Pender, Neb., with the 11th place time of 28:09; Todd Wolf, a junior from Corning, Iowa, with the 12th place time of 28:14; and Monte Larsen, a sophomore from Neola, Iowa, with the 14th place time of 28:39.
Morningside will compete in the Briar Cliff University Invitational on Saturday, Oct. 10.

Nelson was the individual champion at last Saturday’s Doane College Dean White Invitational with a time of 18:57 over the 5K course to top a field of 64 runners. Her efforts led Morningside to the team championship in the six-team field.
Nelson received the GPAC Runner of the Week honor for the second time this season.
Morningside will compete in this Friday’s Grand View University Invitational in Des Moines, Iowa.

Morningside College dominated the competition in the women’s division of Saturday’s Doane College Dean White Invitational cross country meet in Crete, Neb.
The Mustangs had six of the top 11 finishers in the meet and finished with 20 points to reign over a six-team field. Host Doane was a distant second with 47 points. Morningside is ranked 19th nationally in the NAIA.
Morningside’s Kara Nelson, a junior from Cherokee, Iowa, was the individual champion with a time of 18:57.37 over the 5k course, while teammate Erin Keitges, a senior from Allen, Neb., was the runner-up in 19:18.65.
Mustang runners Jessica Clark, a sophomore from Mondamin, Iowa, and Tabitha Shepherd, a freshman from Corning, Iowa, finished fourth and fifth with times of 19:56.84 and 19:57.65, respectively. Lydia Ford, a sophomore from Vermillion, S.D., also finished in the top 10 with an eighth place time of 20:07.68 and Nicole Seier, a freshman from Lincoln, Neb., finished just out of the top 10 with the 11th place time of 20:22.80.
Morningside finished fourth in the men’s team standings with 79 points. The Mustangs’ top runner was Brian Gesink, a junior from Sioux Center, Iowa, who finished fifth in the 8k race with a time of 27:10.05. Taylor Chapman, a freshman from Spencer, Iowa, was next with the 12th place time of 27:23.78.
The Mustangs will compete in next Friday’s Grand View University Invitational in Des Moines, Iowa.

Morningside’s Brian Gesink, a junior from Sioux Center, Iowa; and Kara Nelson, a junior from Cherokee, Iowa, have been named the Hauff Mid-America Sports/Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) Men’s and Women’s Cross Country Runners of the Week for their performances at last Saturday’s University of South Dakota Don Baker Invitational in Vermillion, S.D.
Gesink finished fourth in the 8K men’s race with a personal best time of 26:20.44. He was the top finisher from a NAIA school in a meet that included NCAA Division I University of South Dakota and NCAA II Augustana College and Wayne State College.
Nelson was the women’s runner-up with a time of 18:53.66 over the 5K course to finish second behind South Dakota All-American Ramsey Fitzsimmons.
The Mustangs will compete in the Iowa State University Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 19, in Ames, Iowa.
