Morningside track & field head coach Dave Nash has announced the Mustangs’ track & field Most Valuable Players for the 2007 indoor and outdoor seasons.

Leading the list of MVPs is Erin Keitges, a freshman from Allen, Neb., who was named the Mustang women’s Most Valuable Runner for both the indoor and outdoor seasons. Keitges broke the Mustangs’ records in the 5000-meters with a time of 18:34.57 during the indoor season and with a time of 18:45.22 during the outdoor season. She was one of the Mustangs’ top performers at the Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) Indoor and Outdoor Championships. She placed third in the 3000-meters and 5000-meters at the GPAC Indoor Championships and placed third in the 5000-meters and the 3000-meter steeplechase at the GPAC Outdoor Championships.


Eric Roggatz, a sophomore from Anthon, Iowa, received the men’s Most Valuable Runner Award for the indoor season and Chris Nordstrom, a sophomore from Minneapolis, Minn., was the Mustangs’ Most Valuable Runner for the outdoor campaign. Roggatz had Morningside’s top individual finish in the men’s competition at the GPAC Indoor Championships with a fourth place effort in the 200-meters. Nordstrom placed seventh in the 800-meters and helped the Mustangs place seventh in the 3200-meter relay at the GPAC Outdoor Championships.


Anne Torkelson, a sophomore from Norfolk, Neb., and Vanessa Warzecha, a sophomore from Aloha, Ore., were the Mustang women’s Most Valuable Field Event Athletes for the indoor and outdoor seasons. Torkelson tied the Mustangs’ high jump record by clearing 5-5 twice during the indoor season, including the NAIA Indoor National Championships en route to a fourth place finish to earn NAIA All-America honors. Warzecha was a NAIA All-American during the outdoor season when she was the national runner-up in the javelin with a school-record distance of 148-10.


Jeramiah Schrock, a senior from Central City, Neb., and Brad South, a freshman from Council Bluffs, Iowa, were the Most Valuable Field Event Athletes for the men’s indoor and outdoor seasons. Schrock placed sixth in the 35 lb. weight throw at the GPAC Indoor Championships. South earned NAIA All-America honors during the outdoor season when he placed fourth in the javelin at the NAIA Outdoor National Championships with a school-record distance of 204-7.

 

Five Mustangs Named NAIA All-America Scholar-Athletes

Cami Cain, Emily Grabow, Annie McInnis, Brooke Pottorff, and Eric Roggatz have been named 2007 Daktronics-NAIA Track & Field All-America Scholar-Athletes.


Cain, a junior from Elkhorn, Neb., has a 3.82 cumulative grade point average (GPA) with a major in nursing.


Grabow, a junior from Fort Calhoun, Neb., has a 3.50 cumulative GPA with majors in nursing and Spanish.


Grabow placed fifth in the 3000-meter steeplechase at the GPAC Outdoor Championships and was sixth in the 3000-meters at the GPAC Indoor Championships.


McInnis, a junior from Omaha, has a 3.58 cumulative GPA with a major in elementary education. She also earned Daktronics NAIA All-America Scholar-Athlete honors in cross country earlier this year.


McInnis placed sixth in the 800-meters and the mile at the GPAC Indoor Championships and finished sixth in the 1500-meters at the GPAC Outdoor Championships.


Pottorff, a junior from Corning, Iowa, has a 3.70 cumulative GPA with a major in nursing.


Roggatz, a junior from Anthon, Iowa, has a 3.51 cumulative GPA with a major in engineering physics.


Roggatz placed fourth in the 200-meters at the GPAC Indoor Championships and fifth in the 200-meters at the GPAC Outdoor Championships.


Daktronics-NAIA Track & Field All-America Scholar-Athletes must be of at least junior status and have a cumulative GPA of 3.50 or higher.

Warzecha Is National Runner-Up In Javelin

Photo of Vanessa WarzechaVanessa Warzecha, a sophomore from Aloha, Ore., placed second in the women’s javelin throw with a school-record distance of 148-10 during Thursday’s action at the NAIA Outdoor Track & Field National Championships at Fresno, Calif.


Her school-record toss came on her first throw of the day and topped her previous Morningside standard of 145-4 earlier this season on April 27 at the Simpson College Kip Janvrin Open.


Liz Gleadle of the University of British Columbia finished first with a distance of 161-8.


Warzecha earned NAIA All-America honors with her second place finish. She was also an All-American in the javelin last year when she finished fifth at the NAIA National Championships.

The Mustangs’ Brad South, a freshman from Council Buffs, Iowa, also earned NAIA All-America honors with a fifth place finish in the men’s javelin. South’s distance was a personal best 204-7 on his second of six attempts. He topped his previous best of 196-11 by almost 10 feet.

South became Morningside's first NAIA Outdoor Track & Field All-American since Bill Kirchwehm in the high jump in 1970.


Morningside’s Jeramiah Schrock, a senior from Central City, Neb., competed in the men’s hammer throw. Schrock finished 12th with a distance of 167-10.

 

Mustangs Sweep Javelin Titles At GPAC Championships

Visit the Great Plains Athletic Conference Web site Brad South, a freshman from Council Bluffs, Iowa, and Vanessa Warzecha, a sophomore from Aloha, Ore., triumphed in the men’s and women’s javelin throws at the 2007 Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Friday at Seward, Neb.


South had a winning distance of 187-9 1/2 in the men’s javelin, while Warzecha claimed the women’s title with a distance of 137-7.


Their victories in the javelin helped lead Morningside to sixth place finishes in the team standings in both the men’s and women’s competition.


The Mustangs’ Erin Keitges, a freshman from Allen, Neb., scored points in two events with third place times of 18:45.29 in the women’s 5000-meters and 11:45.98 in the 3000-meter steeplechase. Morningside had multiple placewinners in the two events. Val Crutchley, a junior from Mount Vernon, Iowa, placed sixth in the 5000-meters with a time of 19:20.18 and Emily Grabow, a junior from Fort Calhoun, Neb., was fifth in the 3000-meter steeplechase with a time of 12:16.13.


Morningside’s other women’s individual placewinners were Annie McInnis, a junior from Omaha, Neb., with a sixth place time of 4:58.99 in the 1500-meters; Anne Torkelson, a sophomore from Norfolk, Neb., with a sixth place height of 5-4 in the high jump; Samantha Fritsch, a freshman from Neola, Iowa, with a seventh place distance of 110-0 in the javelin; and Cami Cain, a sophomore from Elkhorn, Neb., with an eighth place time of 1:01.12 in the 400-meters.


The Mustang women placed fifth in the 1600-meter relay, sixth in the 3200-meter relay; and seventh in the 400-meter relay.


Morningside had two placewinners in the men’s hammer throw, where Jeramiah Schrock, a senior from Central City, Neb., was fourth with a distance of 163-3, and Andrew Edison, a sophomore from Council Bluffs, Iowa, was seventh with a distance of 157-1.


The Mustangs other individual placewinners in the men’s competition were: Anthony Rezac, a junior from Brainerd, Neb., who was fifth in the 100-meters with a time of 11.04; Eric Roggatz, a sophomore from Anthon, Iowa, who was fifth in the 200-meters with a time of 22.19; Kasey Hoffman, a junior from Watertown, S.D., who was sixth in the 3000-meter steeplechase with a time of 10:02.75; Christopher Nordstrom, a sophomore from Minneapolis, Minn., who was seventh in the 800-meters with a time of 1:54.94; Jeremiah Danga, a sophomore from Des Moines, Iowa, who was eighth in the 1500-meters with a time of 4:07.13; and David Wilch, a freshman from Fremont, Neb., who was eighth in the pole vault at 13-3.


The Mustangs placed fifth in the 400 and 1600-meter relays and seventh in the 3200-meter relay.

Torkelson Is NAIA All-American In High Jump

Photo of Anne TorkelsonAnne Torkelson, a sophomore from Norfolk, Neb., earned NAIA All-America honors in the high jump with a fourth place finish at the NAIA Indoor Track & Field Championships at Johnson City, Tenn.


Torkelson placed fourth in the event after she cleared 5-5 to tie her own Morningside school record. She also cleared 5-5 earlier this season at the Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) Indoor Championships to qualify for the national meet and also cleared 5-5 last season.


The top six finishers in each individual event and relay event at the NAIA Indoor Championships are recognized as All-Americans.

Morningside failed to advance past the prelims in the men’s 3200-meter relay at the NAIA Indoor Track & Field Championships at Johnson City, Tenn.


The Mustangs’ quartet of Jama Farah, a junior from Sioux City; Christopher Nordstrom, a sophomore from Minneapolis, Minn.; Eddy Graf, a freshman from Logan, Iowa; and Jacob Trettin, a junior from Grafton, Iowa, finished eighth in their preliminary heat with a time of 7:57.99

 

Mustangs Finish 2nd In 3200-Meter Relay At GPAC Meet

Morningside’s best finish at Saturday’s Great Plains Athletics Conference (GPAC) Indoor Track & Field Championships at Lincoln, Neb., came in the men’s 3200-meter relay, where the Mustangs finished second and qualified for the NAIA national meet.


The Mustangs’ 3200-meter relay team of Kasey Hoffman, a junior from Watertown, S.D.; Chris Nordstrom, a sophomore from Minneapolis, Minn.; Jamah Farah, a junior from Sioux City; and Jacob Trettin, a junior from Grafton, Iowa, combined for a time of 7:52.47.


Morningside’s top individual finishes came from Erin Keitges, a freshman from Allen, Neb.; who placed third in the women’s 5000-meters and 3000-meters with times of 18:34.57 and 10:45.36, respectively. Keitges broke her own school record in the 5000-meters to shatter her previous Morningside standard of 18:58.58 earlier this season on Jan. 27 at the Buena Vista University Invitational.


Val Crutchley, a sophomore from Mount Vernon, Iowa, also placed in the 5000-meters and 3000-meters. She placed fourth in the 5000-meters with a time of 19:09.22 and eighth in the 3000-meters with a time of 11:01.57. Emily Grabow, a junior from Fort Calhoun, Neb., placed sixth in the 3000-meters with a time of 10:56.43 to give the Mustangs three placewinners in the event.


  1. Annie McInnis, a junior from Omaha, Neb., was also a multiple placewinner for the Mustangs with sixth place times of 5:20.41 in the mile and 2:26.26 in the 800-meters.


Anne Torkelson, a sophomore from Norfolk, Neb., cleared 5-3 to place fifth in the high jump and Bailey Johnson, a freshman from Milford, Iowa, placed eighth in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 9.76 seconds.


The Mustangs placed sixth in the 3200-meter relay and seventh in the 1600-meter relay with times of 10:06.73 and 4:12.55, respectively.


The top individual placewinner for the Morningside men was Eric Roggatz, a sophomore from Anthon, Iowa, who finished fourth in the 200-meters with a time of 22.41 seconds.


The Mustangs had two athletes place in the weight throw, where Jeremiah Schrock, a senior from Central City, Neb., placed sixth with a distance of 51-2 1/4 and Andrew Edison, a sophomore from Council Bluffs, Iowa, placed eighth at 50-1/4.


Eddy Graf, a freshman from Logan, Iowa, placed eighth in the 800-meters with a time of 1:57.89.


Morningside scored 36.5 points to finish in sixth place in the women’s team standings and scored 22 points to finish in eighth place in the men’s team standings.

Torkelson Is GPAC Field Event Athlete Of The Week

Photo of Anne TorkelsonAnne Torkelson, a sophomore from Norfolk, Neb., has been named the Hauff Mid-America Sports/Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) Women’s Indoor Track Field Event Athlete of the Week.


Torkelson was the women’s high jump champion at last Saturday’s Dordt Invitational when she cleared 5-5 to tie her own Morningside school record and automatically qualify for the 2007 NAIA Indoor Championships in March at Johnson City, Tenn.


Aside from her victory in the high jump, Torkelson also placed second in the long jump with a distance of 15-6 1/2 and in the 400-meters with a time of 1:01.74.
