Photo of Vanessa WarzechaVanessa Warzecha, a freshman from Aloha, Ore., earned NAIA All-America honors with a fifth place finish in the women’s javelin on Thursday at the 2006 NAIA Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Fresno, Calif.


Warzecha placed fifth with a distance of 139-4, just five inches shy of her school-record distance of 139-9 she set earlier this year at the Sioux City Relays. Warzecha, the 2006 Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) women’s javelin champion, became Morningside’s first-ever NAIA All-American in women’s track & field.


The top six finishers in each event are awarded All-America status.


Morningside’s Jeramiah Schrock, a senior from Central City, Neb., also competed during Thursday’s action at the NAIA Outdoor Championships. Schrock finished 25th in the men’s hammer throw with a distance of 146-10.

Jacob Trettin and Anne Torkelson were named the men’s and women’s Most Valuable Players of the Morningside College track & field team for the 2006 indoor season, while Anthony Rezac and Vanessa Warzecha were named the MVPs for the 2006 outdoor season.


Trettin, a sophomore from Grafton, Iowa, had one of the Mustangs’ top individual finishes at the 2006 Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) Indoor Championships with a fifth place time of 1:25.41 in the 600-meters.


Torkelson, a freshman from Norfolk, Neb., was a NAIA Indoor national qualifier after she finished third in the high jump at the GPAC Indoor Championships with a school-record tying height of 5-5. She also ran the leadoff leg to help the Mustangs place third in the women’s 1600-meter relay at the GPAC Indoor Championships.

Rezac, a sophomore from Brainard, Neb., placed in two individual events at the 2006 GPAC Outdoor Championships with a third place time of 10.86 in the 100-meters and a sixth place time of 22.31 in the 200-meters. Rezac also ran the leadoff leg for a Morningside 400-meter relay team that placed third at the GPAC Outdoor Championships.


Warzecha, a freshman from Aloha, Ore., was the women’s javelin champion with a distance of 139-5 at the GPAC Outdoor Championships and is a NAIA national qualifier in the event. She is the Morningside record holder in the javelin with a distance of 139-9 at this year’s Sioux City Relays.


The Mustangs’ presented Most Improved Awards to Javier Lozano, a sophomore from Sioux City, and Cassie Main, a freshman from Lanesboro, Iowa.

Vanessa Warzecha is the 2006 Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) champion in the women’s javelin after she won the event with a distance of 139-5 at the GPAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships held Saturday at Fremont, Neb.


The Mustangs’ top performer in the men’s competition was Anthony Rezac, who placed in two individual events and ran the leadoff leg for a Morningside 400-meter relay team that placed third with a time of 43.37. Rezac’s top individual finish came in the 100-meters, where he placed third with a time of 10.86 seconds. He was sixth in the 200-meters with a time of 22.31.


Jacob Trettin was sixth in the men’s 800-meters with a time of 1:59.24 and Jeremiah Danga was sixth in the men’s 1500-meters with a time of 4:11.01.


Trettin and Danga helped lead the Mustangs to their top relay finish with a second place time of 7:54.81 in the men’s 3200-meter event. The other two runners were Jama Farah and Kasey Hoffman.


Jeramiah Schrock also placed in an individual event for the Morningside men with an eighth place distance of 156-9 in the hammer throw.


Aside from Warzecha’s victory in the javelin, Morningside had three other athletes place in the individual events in the women’s competition. Emily Grabow was fifth in the 3000-meter steeplechase with a time of 12:14.42, Anne Torkelson was seventh in the high jump at 5-2, and Candice Whitney was eighth in the 1500-meters with a time of 5:06.10.


Morningside finished in seventh place in the men’s team standings with 32 points and in eighth place in the women’s team standings with 24 points.

Warzecha Is GPAC Field Event Athlete Of The Week

Photo of Vanessa WarzechaVanessa Warzecha, a freshman from Aloha, Ore., has been named the Hauff Mid-America Sports/Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) Women’s Field Event Athlete of the Week.


Warzecha was the women’s javelin champion at the Concordia University Invitational track & field meet on April 8 at Seward, Neb., with a school-record distance of 137-0. Her throw topped the former Morningside record of 130-10 set in 2001 by two-time NCAA Division II heptathlon national champion Meredith Davis.

 

 

 

Torkelson Competes At NAIA Nationals

Anne Torkelson, a freshman from Norfolk, Neb., tied for 17th place in the women’s high jump during Saturday’s competition at the 2006 NAIA Indoor Track & Field Championships at Johnson City, Tenn.


Torkelson cleared a height of 5-3 at the national meet. She cleared 5-5 at last month’s Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) Indoor Championships to tie the Morningside indoor record.


Torkelson was a two-time Nebraska Class A state qualifier in the high jump during her prep career at Norfolk High School and placed fifth in the state meet with a height of 5-4 as a senior.


Mustang Teams Finish 9th At GPAC Championships

Morningside College finished in ninth place in the team standings in both the men’s and women’s divisions of the 2006 Great Plains Athletic Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships held Saturday at Lincoln, Neb.


Morningside’s highest individual finish came from Anne Torkelson, who tied for third in the women’s high jump with a height of 5-5 to tie a Morningside school record. She tied a mark previously set by Jennifer Gould in 2005 and Michaela Webb in 2002.


Torkelson also ran the leadoff leg for a Morningside 1600-meter relay team that placed third with a time of 4:12.44. The other runners on the team were Brenda Chord, Sheri Howard, and Cami Cain.


Cain also placed seventh in the 400-meters with a time of 1:02.26.


Annie McInnis was the Mustangs’ only multiple event place winner. Her best finish came in the mile run, where she was sixth with a time of 5:32.91. McInnis also placed eighth in the 800-meters with a time of 2:30.14.


Candice Whitney and Emily Grabow also placed in individual events. Whitney was seventh in the 1000-meters with a time of 3:15.74, while Grabow was seventh in the 3000-meters with a time of 11:13.57.


Morningside finished fourth in the women’s 3200-meter relay with a time of 10:16.53.

Jacob Trettin and Jama Farah each had fifth place finishes for the Morningside men. Trettin was fifth in the 600-meters with a time of 1:25.41, while Farah was fifth in the 800-meters with a time of 1:59.74.


Jeramiah Danga added a sixth place time of 4:34.71 in the mile.


Morningside placed fourth in the men’s 3200-meter relay and fifth in the men’s 1600-meter relay with times of 8:10.19 and 3:31.08, respectively.
