Mustangs Win Four Events At John Dalton Open

Morningside College won four events in the college women’s division of Saturday’s University of South Dakota’s John Dalton Open indoor track & field meet in Vermillion, S.D.


Margo Stanforth, a senior from Platte, S.D.; and Jessica Hudelson, a sophomore from Elk Point, S.D., each played a role in two Mustang victories. Stanforth won the 600-meters with a time of 1:40.73, while Hudelson triumphed in the 800-meters with a time of 2:19.84.


Stanforth and Hudelson ran the first and third legs of a Morningside 1600-meter relay team that finished first with a time of 4:05.16. They were joined on the team by Sabrina Sieperda, a sophomore from Rock Rapids, Iowa; and Deidre Hinkeldey, a sophomore from Alta, Iowa. Sieperda also finished sixth in the 600-meters with a time of 1:42.47.


The Mustangs’ other victory came from Erin Keitges, a senior from Allen, Neb., who reigned in the 3000-meters with a time of 10:24.73.


Hudelson’s victory in the 800-meters led a one-two-three Morningside finish in the event, as Heather Hoefs, a junior from Valentine, Neb., and Breanna Mathes, a freshman from Cherokee, Iowa, were the next two finishers with times of 2:22.75 and 2:25.82, respectively.


Kara Nelson, a junior from Cherokee, gave the Mustang women a pair of runner-up finishes with times of 3:05.12 in the 1000-meters and 5:11.99 in the mile.


Morningside had five athletes finish second in the men’s competition. The Mustangs’ runner-ups were Edwin Graf, a senior from Logan, Iowa, with a time of 1:24.29 in the 600-meters; Brian Gesink, a junior from Sioux Center, Iowa, with a time of 2:33.26 in the 1000-meters; Curtis Rife, a sophomore from Mondamin, Iowa, with a height of 6-4 in the high jump; Tyler Heitman, a freshman from South Sioux City, Neb., with a distance of 45-4 1/2 in the triple jump; and Andy Simons, a freshman from Larchwood, Iowa, with a distance of 47-3 1/2 in the shot put. Heitman also finished fourth in the long jump with a leap of 21-10.


The Mustangs’ best relay showing in the men’s competition came in the 1600-meter event, where the quartet of Monte Larsen, a sophomore from Neola, Iowa; Jeremiah Avise Rouse, a senior from Tama, Iowa; John Harris, a freshman from Holstein, Iowa; and Graf finished second with a time of 3:26.95.


Larsen added a fifth place time of 2:38.58 in the 1000-meters.


Morningside had third place finishes from Nicole Seier, a freshman from Lincoln, Neb., with a time of 1:41.20 in the women’s 600-meters, and Taylor Chapman, freshman from Spencer, Iowa, with a time of 4:33.54 in the men’s mile.


Tabitha Shepherd, a freshman from Corning, Iowa, finished fourth in the women’s 1000-meters with a time of 3:12.62; Jessica Clark, a sophomore from Mondamin, Iowa, finished sixth in the women’s mile with a time of 5:36.82; Peter Malga, a senior from Omaha, Neb., finished seventh in the men’s 600-meters with a time of 1:27.27; Alex Weborg, a senior from Pender, Neb., finished seventh in the men’s mile with a time of 4:37.29; McKenzie Reece, a freshman from Forest City, Iowa, finished eighth in the women’s 600-meters with a time of 1:44.98; and Trama Giermann, a sophomore from Vail, Iowa, finished eighth in the women’s 1000-meters with a time of 3:22.45.


Morningside will compete in the Dordt College Invitational on Friday, Feb. 12.
