Mustangs Announce Four Recruits

Morningside College men’s and women’s tennis head coach Larry Mason has announced the names of four recruits who will enroll at Morningside this fall.

The recruits are:


Dani Bies of Centennial, Colo. Bies is a 2009 graduate of Grandview High School, where she was a two-year varsity letterwinner. She had a 13-2 record at No. 1 doubles this past season.


Mary Horton of Sioux City. Horton is a 2009 graduate of Sioux City North High School, where she had a 6-8 record at No. 4 singles and a 9-9 record at No. 3 doubles this past season. Horton and teammate Kaitlin Barkley were the only Sioux City doubles team to advance past the first round of this year’s Class 2A Regional in Fort Dodge, Iowa.


James Nitz of Cherokee, Iowa. Nitz will join the Mustangs with sophomore eligibility as a transfer from Iowa State University. He is a 2007 graduate of Cherokee Washington High School, where he was a three-year letterwinner.


Nitz had a 9-3 record at No. 1 doubles during his senior campaign. As a junior, he posted records of 8-2 at No. 5 singles and 9-3 at No. 3 doubles.

Reid Rosen of Fairmont, Minn. Rosen is a 2009 graduate of Fairmont High School, where he was a five-year letterwinner and a two-time All-South Central Conference performer. He was Fairmont’s No. 1 singles player as a sophomore, junior, and senior.


Rosen posted a 12-4 singles record this past season and was the South Central Conference runner-up at No. 1 singles. As a junior, Rosen teamed with Paul Miller for a bronze medal finish at the Class 2A Section meet to become the Cardinals’ first doubles tandem to reach the sectional semifinals in a decade.

Morningside’s women’s tennis team posted a 5-4 record in Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) competition this past season to finish fifth in the league standings and the Mustang men also finished fifth in the GPAC standings with a 3-4 league mark. The Mustang women were one of the most improved teams in the GPAC after they had posted a 1-7 league record in 2008.

 

Five Tennis Players Receive Scholar-Athlete Honors

NAIA LogoFive Morningside College athletes have been named Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athletes in the sport of tennis.


The Mustangs’ tennis Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athletes are:


Matt Ford, a junior from Rice, Minn. Ford has a 3.66 cumulative grade point average (GPA) with a major in business administration. Ford had an 8-9 record in the No. 1 singles flight and led the Mustang men with 14 combined singles and doubles victories this past season.


Laura Gildemeister, a senior from Sioux City. Gildemeister has a 3.84 cumulative GPA with a major in business administration. Gildemeister had a 4-6 record in the No. 1 singles flight.


Marisa Graham, a sophomore from Sioux City. Graham has a 3.69 cumulative GPA with majors in biology and business administration. Graham had a 9-3 record in the No. 3 singles flight and led the Mustang women with 15 combined singles and doubles victories.


Kate Nelson, a sophomore from Schleswig, Iowa. Nelson has a 3.73 cumulative GPA with a major in mass communication. Nelson had a 5-7 record in the No. 2 singles flight.


Michelle Rubenking, a sophomore from Corning, Iowa. Rubenking has a 3.54 cumulative GPA with majors in advertising and graphic design.


Student-athletes must be of at least junior academic status and have a minimum GPA of 3.50 in order to be eligible for Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athlete honors.

Graham Named To All-GPAC Team

Photo of Marisa GrahamMarisa Graham, a sophomore from Sioux City, Iowa, has been named to the 2009 All-Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) Women’s Tennis Team. Graham is the first women’s tennis player in Morningside history to ever earn All-GPAC honors.


Graham had the Mustangs’ best singles record during the 2009 season with a 9-3 mark while playing predominately in the No. 3 flight. She had a 7-1 record in matches against GPAC competition, losing only to Concordia University’s Taylor Cook.


Graham’s nine singles victories are the third highest single-season total in Morningside history behind 13 wins by Anouchka Ganivet in 1998 and 10 wins by Yong Tran in 1998. With a 14-9 career mark, Graham has moved within two wins of Morningside’s career record of 16 singles triumphs by Tran, who posted a 16-8 record over the 1997 and 1998 seasons.


Aside from her 9-3 singles record this season, Graham also comprised one-half of the Mustangs’ top doubles tandem by teaming with Lynn Leonard, a sophomore from Cherokee, Iowa, for a 6-6 record in the No. 2 flight. The duo has an 11-9 record over the past two seasons.

Morningside was one of the most improved teams in the GPAC this season with a 5-7 overall record, including a 5-4 mark in the GPAC, following a 2008 campaign where the Mustangs were 2-9 overall and 1-7 in the GPAC.

Mustangs Sweep Weekly Tennis Honors

Morningside swept this week’s Hauff Mid-America Sports/Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) Men’s and Women’s Tennis Player of the Week awards.


Matt Ford, a sophomore from Rice, Minn., is the GPAC Men’s Player of the Week and Kassie Hein, a freshman from Milford, Iowa, is the GPAC Women’s Player of the Week.


Ford went 3-0 at No. 1 singles and 2-1 at No. 1 doubles last week. Ford leveled his season’s singles record at 6-6 with a 6-2, 6-0 victory against Scott Kraayenbrink of Dordt College, a 6-1, 7-6 triumph against Kristopher Andresen of Cornell College, and a 6-1, 6-0 win against Luke Riesselman of Simpson College.


Morningside defeated Dordt 6-3 in its only GPAC dual last week and is currently 3-0 in the GPAC standings.
Hein had a 6-1, 6-2 victory against Serena Graves in the No. 6 singles flight and combined with Shannon Schroeder for an 8-3 win at No. 3 doubles in the Mustangs’ 8-1 win against Dordt last week. She has a 3-1 singles record this season.


Morningside and Concordia University are tied for first place in the GPAC women’s tennis standings with 4-0 league marks.

 

 

Hamilton Is GPAC Player Of The Week

Photo of Garth HamiltonGarth Hamilton, a freshman from Lincoln, Neb., has been named the Hauff Mid-America Sports/Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) Men’s Tennis Player of the Week.


Hamilton went 2-0 at No. 4 singles last week with a 7-5, 6-0 victory against Benjamin Stone of Buena Vista University and a 7-6, 6-1 triumph against Aaron Masterson of Wartburg College. Hamilton also combined with teammate Matt Ford for a 1-1 record in doubles play.


Hamilton has a 5-0 record in singles play so far this season.

 

 

 

Graham Named GPAC Player Of The Week

Photo of Marisa GrahamMarisa Graham, a sophomore from Sioux City, has been named the Hauff Mid-America Sports/Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) Women’s Tennis Player of the Week.


Graham went 2-0 at No. 2 singles and 2-0 at No. 2 doubles last week to help lead the Mustangs to a 5-4 win against Midland Lutheran College and a 6-3 triumph against Doane College. She had a 6-4, 3-6, 11-9 win against Midland Lutheran’s Kristena Rump and an 8-5 triumph against Doane’s Cassie Steiner.
