Cora Kugler, a junior from Watertown, Minn., received the Swimmer of the Year award for the Morningside College women’s swimming team, while Cole Malin, a freshman from Carroll, Iowa, and Taylor McCloskey, a freshman from Runnells, Iowa, received Co-Swimmer of the Year awards for the men’s team at the Mustangs’ swimming awards banquet.
Kugler finished 15th in the 100-yard breaststroke at this year’s NAIA Swimming & Diving National Championships and is a school record holder with times of 1:08.33 in the 100-yard breaststroke and 2:16.72 in the 200-yard individual medley.
Malin set school records in the 50-yard and 100-yard freestyles this past season with times of 21.58 and 47.01 seconds, respectively.
McCloskey had the best individual finish for the Morningside men’s team at this year’s NAIA Swimming & Diving National Championships with a 16th place showing in the 200-yard butterfly. He set school records with times of 52.95 in the 100-yard butterfly and 2:00.63 in the 200-yard individual medley.
The other award winners were:
Most Improved - Lynsay Haverland, a freshman from Dubuque, Iowa, and Austin Johnson, a freshman from Osawatomie, Kan.
Freshman of the Year – Hannah Hecht, a freshman from Lansing, Kan.; Sarah Kabes, a freshman from Burnsville, Minn.; and Kieran Sweeney, a freshman from Altoona, Iowa.
Hardest Worker – Katie Kelter, a freshman from Olathe, Kan., and Michael Andrlik, a freshman from Ralston, Neb.
Mustang Student-Athlete – Sydney Brisco, a senior from Scottsbluff, Neb., and Josh Karel, a freshman from Lincoln, Neb.
The Mustangs also announced their 2012-13 team captains. They are Kugler, Karel, Krystal Carlson, a junior from Richfield, Minn.; Jenna Bowmaster, a sophomore from Lincoln, Neb.; Patrick Whitsell, a sophomore from Council Bluffs, Iowa; and Drew Paulsen, a freshman from Carroll, Iowa.
Krystal Carlson, a junior from Richfield, Minn., has been named a 2011-12 Capital One College Division Women’s At-Large First-Team Academic All-American as selected by College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Carlson has a 3.86 cumulative grade point average (GPA) with majors in biology and chemistry. She had the Mustangs’ top individual showing at the 2012 NAIA Swimming & Diving National Championships with a 10th place finish in the 1650-yard freestyle. Carlson is the Morningside record holder in the 200, 500, 1000, and 1650-yard freestyles and is also part of school-record holding relay teams in the 400-yard medley and 200 and 400-yard freestyle events.
Athletes must be of at least sophomore academic status, be a starter or significant reserve, and have a cumulative GPA of 3.30 or higher to be eligible for Capital One Academic All-America honors.

Krystal Carlson, a junior from Richfield, Minn., placed 10th in the women’s 1650-yard freestyle during Saturday evening’s final session of the 2012 NAIA Swimming & Diving National Championships in Oklahoma City, Okla.
Carlson’s 10th place effort was the Mustangs’ top finish at the national meet. She had a time of 18:04.01.
The Mustangs also had place winning performances from Cortney Walls, a sophomore from Cannon Falls, Minn., and Taylor McCloskey, a freshman from Runnells, Iowa, in Saturday evening’s finals.
Walls finished 11th in the women’s 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:29.70.
McCloskey finished 16th in the men’s 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:01.50.
Morningside finished 12th in the women’s 400-yard freestyle relay with a time of 3:46.15 from the quartet of Taylor Chapman, a junior from Lenexa, Kan.; Sara Kabes, a freshman from Burnsville, Minn.; Jaimie Fast, a freshman from Hastings, Neb.; and Cora Kugler, a junior from Watertown, Minn.
Morningside finished 13th in the men’s 400-yard freestyle relay with a school-record time of 3:14.21 from James Svoboda, a freshman from Audubon, Iowa; Kieran Sweeney, a freshman from Altoona, Iowa; Travis Schombert, a freshman from Lockridge, Iowa; and Cole Malin, a freshman from Carroll, Iowa. They broke their own Morningside record of 3:14.52 they set earlier this season.
Morningside had several swimmers not advance from Saturday’s prelims.
Hannah Hecht, a freshman from Lansing, Kan., was 20th in the women’s 200-yard backstroke prelims with a time of 2:15.96.
Jenna Bowmaster, a sophomore from Lincoln, Neb., and Kugler were 23rd and 24th in the women’s 200-yard breaststroke prelims with times of 2:38.90 and 2:39.54, respectively.
Malin was 30th with a time of 48.16 seconds, Sweeney was 38th with a time of 49.30, Schombert as 43rd with a time of 50.13, and Svoboda was 44th with a time of 50.22 in the men’s 100-yard freestyle prelims.

Walls and Kugler placed 13th and 15th, respectively in Friday’s finals in the women’s 100-yard breaststroke.
Walls had a time of 1:09.96 and Kugler had a time of 1:10.45 for the Mustangs’ top individual finishes so far at the NAIA National Championships.
Morningside also placed in all four of Friday’s relay events, including 11th place finishes in the men’s and women’s 400-yard medleys.
Hecht, Bowmaster, Chapman, and Carlson combined to finish 11th in the women’s 400-yard medley relay with a school-record time of 4:10.25. They shattered the former Morningside record of 4:13.90 set earlier this season.
The Mustangs’ men’s 400-yard medley team of Sweeney,Michael Andrlik, a freshman from Ralston, Neb.; McCloskey, and Malin placed 11th with a time of 3:38.05.
Malin, Svoboda, Schombert, and Sweeney finished 12th in the men’s 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:28.13.
Carlson, Chapman, Fast, and Kabes finished 13th in the women’s 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:44.93.
Aside from their two finalists in the women’s 100-yard breaststroke, the Mustangs had several other swimmers compete in the Friday’s prelims that did not advance to the finals.
The Mustangs’ top performance from the non-finalists came from McCloskey, who finished 22nd in the 100-yard men’s butterfly prelims with a school record time of 52.95 seconds to break the former Morningside standard of 52.98 set by Sweeney earlier this year. Sweeney and Matt Mayfield, a senior from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, finished 24th and 26th in the 100-yard butterfly prelims with times of 54.19 and 57.65, respectively.
Walls finished 21st in the women’s 400-yard individual medley prelims with a time of 5:12.48.
Chapman and Kabes finished 28th and 30th in the women’s 100-yard butterfly prelims with times of 1:02.83 and 1:03.51, respectively.
Carlson finished 24th in the women’s 200-yard freestyle prelims with a time of 2:01.31.
Andrlik finished 22nd in the men’s 100-yard breaststroke prelims with a time of 1:03.17.
Kabes and Hecht finished 23rd and 24th in the women’s 100-yard backstroke prelims with times of 1:03.35 and 1:03.39, respectively.

Morningside finished 11th in both the men’s and women’s 200-yard medley relays during Thursday’s action.
The Mustangs’ women’s 200-yard medley relay team of Fast, Walls, Chapman, and Kabes clocked a school-record time of 1:54.58 in the finals to break the former Morningside record of 1:55.01 they set earlier this season.
Morningside’s men’s 200-yard medley relay team of Sweeney, Andrlik, McCloskey,and Malin swam a time of 1:38.78 in Thursday evening’s final.
The Mustangs finished 12th in the men’s 800-yard freestyle relay with a time of 7:31.88 from the quartet of Sweeney, Svoboda, Andrlik, and Mayfield.
Morningside’s women’s 800-yard freestyle relay team of Fast, Kabes, Kugler, and Carlson finished 13th with a time of 8:22.69.
The Mustangs had several swimmers compete in Thursday’s individual events, but none advanced past the prelims.
The Mustangs’ top finisher in the prelims was Carlson, who was 20th in the women’s 500-yard freestyle prelims with a time of 5:25.65.
Malin and Sweeney finished 28th and 30th in the men’s 50-yard freestyle prelims with times of 21.83 and 22.04 seconds, respectively.
McCloskey finished 23rd in the men’s 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:04.55.
Kugler finished 24th in the women’s 200-yard individual medley prelims with a time of 2:17.19.

Sydney Brisco, Krystal Carlson, and Cora Kugler have all been named 2011-12 Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athletes in the sport of women’s swimming & diving.
Brisco, a senior from Scottsbluff, Neb., has a 3.76 cumulative grade point average (GPA) with majors in biology and history.
Carlson, a junior from Richfield, Minn., has a 3.86 cumulative GPA with majors in biology and chemistry.
Kugler, a junior from Watertown, Minn., has a 3.64 cumulative GPA with a major in elementary education.
All three swimmers were also named Daktronics-NAIA Scholar Athletes in 2010-11.
Student-athletes must be of at least junior academic status and have a minimum GPA of 3.50 in order to be eligible for Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athlete honors.
Morningside College’s women’s swim team received the Scholar All-America Team award for the 2011 fall semester presented by the College Swimming Coaches Association of America.
The distinction is presented to college and university swimming and diving teams that achieve a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.00 or higher.
Morningside was one of three NAIA teams to receive the award and had the highest GPA of the three with a 3.15.
Steve Mohs was named the Co-Women’s Coach of the Meet at this past weekend’s Liberals Arts Championships swimming & diving meet in Elsah Ill.
Mohs led the Mustangs to a third place finish in a 13-team field for Morningside’s highest finish ever at the Liberal Arts Championships.
He shared the award with Luther College’s Lance Huber.
