Carlson And Eagen Receive Most Valuable Awards

Krystal Carlson, a freshman from Richfield, Minn., and Kyle Eagen, a sophomore from Omaha, Neb., were named the Most Valuable Swimmers for the Morningside College women’s and men’s swim teams at the Mustangs’ post-season awards banquet on Saturday.


Carlson had the Mustangs’ top individual performance at this year’s NAIA Swimming & Diving National Championships when she placed 11th in the 1,650-yard freestyle with a school-record time of 18:17.64. Carlson also set school records this season with times of 2:00.99 in the 200-yard freestyle, 5:19.80 in the 500-yard freestyle, and 11:02.11 in the 1000-yard freestyle.


Eagen helped lead Morningside to 15th place finishes in the 200-yard freestyle and 400-yard medley relays at this year’s NAIA National Championships.


Other award winners were:


Most Improved – Amy Baer, a freshman from Malvern, Iowa, and Chuck Szitas, a freshman from Meadville, Penn.


Hardest Worker – Sydney Brisco, a sophomore from Scottsbluff, Neb., and Edward Funes, a freshman from El Paso, Texas.


Freshman of the Year – Cora Kugler, a freshman from Watertown, Minn., and Funes.


Outstanding Swimmer of the Year – Maggie Fast, a senior from Hastings, Neb., and Matt Mayfield, a sophomore from Cedar Rapids, Iowa.


Mustang Coaches Award – Brisco and Terence Hancock, a junior from Malvern, Iowa.

 

Carlson Has Mustangs' Top Finish At NAIA Championships

Krystal Carlson, a freshman from Richfield, Minn., had the Mustangs’ top finish at the 2010 NAIA Swimming & Diving National Championships in St. Peters, Mo., with an 11th place finish in Saturday evening’s women’s 1650-yard freestyle.

Carlson broke her own school record in the event with a time of 18:17.64. She had set the previous Mustang standard of 18:21.50 earlier this season on Feb. 6 at the Minnesota Challenge.

Morningside’s Sydney Brisco, a sophomore from Scottsbluff, Neb., also competed in the women’s 1650-yard freestyle and finished 23rd with a time of 19:07.09.

Cora Kugler, a freshman from Watertown, Minn., made the finals in the women’s 200-yard breaststroke and finished 15th with a time of 2:30.47.

Morningside made the finals in the women’s 400-yard freestyle relay and finished 15th with a time of 3:53.65 from the quartet of Kugler, Carlson, Brisco, and Hanna Mortimer, a freshman from Rapid City, S.D.

Brisco finished 43rd in the women’s 100-yard freestyle with a time of 59.16 seconds and the Mustangs’ Kyle Eagen, a sophomore from Omaha, Neb., finished 47th in the men’s 100-yard freestyle prelims with a time of 51.19.

Morningside was 17th in the men’s 400-yard freestyle relay prelims with a time of 3:27.81 from the quartet of Eagen, Matt Mayfield, a sophomore from Cedar Rapids, Iowa; Ahmed Khorshid, a freshman from Miami Beach, Fla.; and Sean Roberts, a sophomore from Omaha.

Kugler broke her own school record in the women’s 100-yard breaststroke en route to a 12th place finish during Friday's action.

Kugler had a time of 1:08.33 in Friday evening’s finals to break her own Morningside record of 1:08.78 she set earlier in the day during the prelims.

Carlson also broke a school record during Friday morning’s prelims. Carlson had a time of 2:00.99 in the women’s 200-yard freestyle to break the Mustangs’ former record of 2:01.20 by Amanda Thompson in 2004. Carlson’s time ranked 25th overall and did not advance her to the finals.

Morningside placed in all four of Friday’s relays.

The Mustangs women’s 200-yard freestyle relay team of Kugler, Brisco, Amy Baer, a freshman from Malvern, Iowa; and Carlson finished 15th with a time of 1:46.09.

Maggie Fast, a senior from Hastings, Neb., Kugler, Carlson, and Brisco combined for a 16th place time of 4:30.40 in the women’s 400-yard medley relay.

Morningside finished 15th in the men’s 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:33.11 from Mayfield, Eagen, Roberts, and Khorshid.

The Mustangs’ men’s 400-yard medley relay team of Dustin Potter, a sophomore from Bedford, Iowa; Dan Place, a senior from Austin, Texas; Roberts, and Eagen finished 15th with a time of 4:08.78.

Roberts had the 34th fastest time of 57.10 seconds in the men’s 100-yard butterfly prelims. Mortimer had the 28th fastest time of 5:25.02 in the women’s 400-yard individual medley prelims.

The highlight of Thursday's action came when Kugler broke her own school record in the women’s 200-yard individual medley during the prelims.

Kugler had a time of 2:17.76 to break the Mustangs’ former record of 2:17.93 she set earlier this season. Kugler finished 24th in the prelims and did not advance to the finals.

The Mustangs’ best event on Thursday was the women’s 800-yard freestyle relay, where the quartet of Brisco, Kugler, Mortimer, and Carlson placed 15th with a time of 8:29.99.

Carlson and Brisco also competed in the women’s 500-yard freestyle, but did not advance past the prelims. Carlson finished 28th with a time of 5:24.41 and Brisco was 38th with a time of 5:30.67.

The Mustangs’ quartet of Edward Funes, a freshman from El Paso, Texas; Terence Hancock, a junior from Malvern, Iowa; Roberts, and Eagen competed in the men’s 200-yard medley relay and finished 17th in the prelims with a time of 1:50.14.

Fast, Mortimer, Kugler, and Baer finished 19th in the prelims of the women’s 200-yard medley relay with a time of 2:04.44.

Brisco A NAIA Scholar-Athlete

Sydney Brisco, a sophomore from Scottsbluff, Neb., has been named a 2010 Daktronics-NAIA Swimming Scholar-Athlete.


Brisco has a 3.90 cumulative grade point average (GPA) and is majoring in biology and history.


Brisco qualified for this year’s NAIA Swimming & Diving National Championships in the 100, 500, and 1650-yard freestyle events. She had the Mustangs’ top individual finish at last year’s NAIA National Championships with a 12th place finish in the women’s 1650-yard freestyle.


Student-athletes must be of at least junior academic status and have a minimum GPA of 3.50 in order to be eligible for Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athlete honors.
