Morningside College swim coach Steve Mohs has announced the names of nine female recruits who will join the Mustangs next season.
The recruits are:
Amy Baer of Malvern, Iowa. Baer, a graduate at Council Bluffs Saint Albert High School, specializes in the breaststroke, backstroke, and individual medley. Mohs said Baer will add depth to the Mustangs, especially in their ability to score points in the relay events. She was the top female point scorer for the Malvern swim team last summer.
Samantha Brigham of Spencer, Iowa. Brigham is a graduate of Spencer High School. Mohs said Brigham specializes in the 200 and 500-yard freestyles. She competed in both events at this year’s Iowa High School regional swimming & diving championships in Fort Dodge.
Krystal Carlson of Richfield, Minn. Carlson is a graduate of Richfield Senior High School. Mohs said Carlson’s strongest events are the distance freestyles and that many of her top times are faster than the current Morningside school records. Carlson placed fourth in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:16.92 at this past season’s Minnesota Class A state meet and also placed 13th in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:59.96.
As a junior, Carlson placed eighth at the state meet in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:27.42 and 11th in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 2:01.13.
Rebecca Giddens of Hastings, Neb. Giddens will join the Mustangs with junior eligibility as a transfer from Coe College. She had personal best times of 1:13.59 in the 100-yard backstroke, 2:37.18 in the 200-yard backstroke, and 6:21.97 in the 500-yard freestyle at this year’s Liberal Arts Championships meet. Giddens is a 2007 graduate of Hastings Senior High School.
Cora Kugler of Watertown, Minn., who is a graduate of Watertown-Mayer High School. Kugler was a four-time state qualifier. She finished 22nd in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:20.31 at this year’s Class A state meet. She helped lead Watertown-Mayer to a ninth place finish in the 200-yard freestyle relay at the Class A state meet as a sophomore and helped lead her team to ninth place finishes in the 200-yard medley relay at the state meet as a freshman and eighth grader. She will swim the breaststroke, individual medley, and sprint freestyle.
Megan McLaury of Spencer, Iowa. McLaury is a graduate of Spencer High School. Mohs said McLaury will help the Mustangs in the distance freestyle, backstroke, and individual medley events. McLaury competed in the 200-yard individual medley, the 100-yard backstroke, and the 100-yard breaststroke at this year’s Iowa High School regional swimming & diving championships in Fort Dodge.
Hanna Mortimer of Rapid City, S.D. Mortimer is a 2009 graduate of Rapid City Stevens High School who has competed for the Greater Rapid City Ellsworth Area and Rapid City Racers swim teams. Mortimer will help the Mustangs in the distance freestyle, backstroke, and breaststroke.
Katelyn Moyer of Nebraska City, Neb. Moyer, a graduate of Lourdes Central Catholic High School. Mohs said Moyer will be an asset to the Mustangs in the breaststroke, butterfly, and individual medley events. Moyer competes for the Plattsmouth swim team.
Allison Smith of Davenport, Iowa. Smith is a graduate of Davenport North High School. Mohs said Smith will add depth to the Mustangs in the distance freestyle events. Smith competed for Davenport North in the 200-yard freestyle, the 500-yard freestyle, and the 400-yard freestyle relay at this year’s Iowa High School regional swimming & diving championships in Davenport.

Scott Anderson, a senior from Ottumwa, Iowa; and Maggie Meier, a senior from Omaha, Neb.; received the Male and Female Swimmer of the Year Awards at the Morningside College swimming team’s post-season awards banquet.
Anderson is the holder of five individual school records and is part of all five Morningside school-record holding relay teams. He holds Morningside individual records with times of 10:05.77 in the 1000-yard freestyle, 16:34.35 in the 1650-yard freestyle, 53.76 in the 100-yard backstroke, 1:56.63 in the 200-yard backstroke, and 2:04.52 in the 200-yard individual medley. His record setting performance in the 200-yard individual medley came at this season’s Mutual of Omaha Invitational. Anderson helped Morningside break school records in the 200-yard and 400-yard freestyle relays at this year’s NAIA Swimming & Diving National Championships.
Meier holds two Morningside individual school records and is part of school-record holding teams in the 200-yard medley and 400-yard medley relays. Her individual school records are times of 1:01.46 in the 100-yard backstroke and 2:13.02 in the 200-yard backstroke.
Other award winners were:
Most Improved – Karissa Gugat, a freshman from Sioux City; Sean Roberts, a freshman from Omaha, Neb.; and Dustin Potter, a freshman from Bedford, Iowa.
Hardest Worker – Kellie Harris, a senior from Omaha, Neb.; and Matt Kerr, a senior from Sigourney, Iowa.
Newcomer of the Year – Sydney Brisco, a freshman from Scottsbluff, Neb.; Taylor Chapman, a freshman from Lenexa, Kan.; and Kyle Eagen, a freshman from Omaha, Neb.
Mustang Award – Angela Bachmann, a senior from Omaha, Neb.; and Matt Kerr, a senior from Sigourney, Iowa.
 Kellie Harris, a senior from Omaha, Neb., has been named a 2009 Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athlete in the sport of women’s swimming & diving.
Harris has a 3.69 cumulative grade point average (GPA) with a major in elementary education. She received Daktroncis-NAIA Scholar-Athlete honors for the third time in her career.
Harris is the Morningside record holder in the women’s 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 11:19.20.
Student-athletes must be of at least junior academic status and have a minimum GPA of 3.50 in order to be eligible for Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athlete honors.

Morningside swimmers broke two school records during Saturday’s final day of action at the 2009 NAIA Swimming & Diving Championships in St. Peters, Mo.
The Mustangs’ top individual finish came from Sydney Brisco, a freshman from Scottsbluff, Neb., who placed 12th in the women’s 1650-yard freestyle with a school-record time of 18:38.97. Brisco broke the former Morningside standard of 18:47.06 set by Kellie Harris in 2007. Harris, a senior from Omaha, also topped her previous Morningside record with a time of 18:42.47 to place 15th.
Morningside also broke a school record in the men’s 400-yard freestyle relay, where the quartet of Matt Kerr, a senior from Sigourney, Iowa; Evan Mann, a junior from Lincoln, Neb.; Kyle Eagen, a freshman from Omaha, Neb.; and Scott Anderson, a senior from Ottumwa, Iowa; placed 11th with a time of 3:17.99 to break the former Morningside record of 3:18.77 set in 2007.
Morningside scored points in two relay events during Friday’s action.
Morningside placed 13th in the men’s 200-yard freestyle relay and in the men’s 400-yard medley relay.
The Mustangs set a school record in the 200-yard freestyle relay when Matt Kerr, a senior from Sigourney, Iowa; Kyle Eagen, a freshman from Omaha, Neb.; Scott Anderson, a senior from Ottumwa, Iowa; and Evan Mann, a junior from Lincoln, Neb., combined for a time of 1:30.35 to break the former school record of 1:30.78 set in 2007.
Morningside’s 400-yard medley relay team of Anderson, Kerr, Sean Roberts, a freshman from Omaha, and Mann had a 13th place time of 3:45.24.
Kerr broke a Morningside record in the prelims of the men’s 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:02.63 to break the former Morningside record of 1:03.62 by Michael Bryant in 2007.
Morningside College scored points in three relay events on Friday.
The Mustangs’ best finish came in the men’s 800-yard freestyle relay with a 10th place time of 7:28.10. The relay team was comprised of Scott Anderson, a senior from Ottumwa, Iowa; Kyle Eagen, a freshman from Omaha, Neb.; Evan Mann, a junior from Lincoln, Neb.; and Matt Kerr, a senior from Sigourney, Iowa.
Morningside placed 14th in the men’s 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:42.59 from the quartet off Anderson, Kerr, Sean Roberts, a freshman from Omaha; and Eagen.
The Mustangs placed 16th in the women’s 200-yard medley relay, where Maggie Meier, a senior from Omaha, Neb.; Kayla Shoup, a senior from Houston, Texas; Taylor Chapman, a freshman from Lenexa, Kan.; and Angela Bachmann, a senior from Omaha, combined for a time of 1:58.86.
Kerr competed in the men’s 50-yard freestyle and had a time of 21.82 to break the former Morningside school record of 21.95 by Joe Disalvo in 2007. Kerr did not advance past the prelims.
