Cortney Heim shut out Morningside on three hits to win a pitcher’s dual against Mustang ace Kelly Baumert. Heim walked three and struck out five to raise her record to 13-4. Baumert, the 2007 and 2008 Great Plains Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Year, pitched a four-hitter with three walks and five strikeouts. The Coyotes scored the only run they needed in the bottom of the first inning when Callie Roan was hit by a pitch, advanced to third on a single by Tagney Jones, and scored on a groundout by Mel Johnson. South Dakota plated a pair of insurance runs in the sixth inning, both unearned, on a bases loaded walk to Alexa Rudeen and a RBI single by Jasey Goedeken. Roan, Jones, Johnson, and Goedeken all had singles for South Dakota. The Mustangs’ hits were singles by Brandi Burke, Emily Wassom, and Kayla Clarey.

Midland Lutheran took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when Natalie Meduna led off with a single, stole second, and scored on a two-out single by Erinn Brue. The Warriors padded their lead to 4-0 when they scored three more runs in the third inning. Midland Lutheran had four hits in the inning, including back-to-back two-out RBI singles by Rachel Theis and Jessie Smith. The Warriors broke the game open with three more runs in the fourth inning to go up 7-0. Meduna walked and Jenna Holt singled to set up a two-run double by Sara Bunn and then Tiana Gataivasa delivered a two-out RBI single to bring home Bunn. The Warriors collected 12 hits against Cougar pitchers Kelli Hamilton and Stephanie Wilson, including two each from Meduna, Bunn, and Theis. Theis pitched a one-hit shutout to get the win, yielding only a third inning infield single to Ashley Splonskowski, who was the Cougars’ only base runner. Theis struck out four batters.

Morningside broke the game open right from the start when the combination of seven Mustang hits and four Minnesota-Morris errors paved the way to a 10-run inning. The big hit of the inning was a two-run double by Cara DeStigter, while Jerra Steffen, Kylie Tirado, and Kylie Helmink all had RBI singles. The Mustangs added three more runs in the third inning on a sacrifice fly by Kendra Klein and another two-run double by DeStigter. The Mustangs capped their scoring with a three-run fifth inning where a RBI triple by Becky Lenhart was the big hit. Morgan Swanson no-hit the Cougars over the first three innings to get the win. Swanson walked one and struck out the final four batters she faced. Morningside shelled Cougar pitchers Emilie Kalvig and Steph Wilson with 13 hits. DeStigter led the way with two doubles, a single, and five RBIs. Helmink also gave the Mustangs a multiple hit performance with three singles. The Mustangs also had extra base hits from Lenhart with a triple and Alisha Wheat with a double. Dianne Blommel had a pair of singles for two of the Cougars’ three hits.

Mel Johnson twirled a two-hit shutout with five walks and nine strikeouts. Johnson yielded only a one-out single to Rachel Theis in the fourth inning and a leadoff single by Mallory Ruhl in the seventh. Johnson also drove in the Coyotes’ first run of the game with a RBI single in the third inning to bring home Jasey Goedeken, who had reached base on an infield single. South Dakota expanded its lead to 3-0 in the fourth inning on a two-run single by Callie Roan and capped its scoring with another run in the sixth when Goedeken doubled and scored on a RBI single by Roan. The Coyotes collected 11 hits against Midland Lutheran pitcher Lyndsi Eckelberry, including two doubles and a single by Goedeken. Roan also had a big game with three singles and three RBIs, while Johnson added a pair of singles.

Kelly Baumert pitched a five-hitter with no walks and seven strikeouts to improve her season’s record to 10-5. The Mustangs, who won their sixth game in a row, took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning when Kylie Hemlink walked and Brandi Burke was hit by a pitch to set up an eventual two-out, two-run single by Jerra Steffen. Helmink finished with two of the Mustangs’ eight hits with a pair of singles. The Mustangs’ extra base hits included a solo home run by Cara DeStigter in the third inning along doubles by Kayla Clarey and Emily Wassom. Leigh Gramke had two of the Lady T’s five hits, including a triple.

South Dakota peppered the Raiders with a 14-hit attack to win an abbreviated five-inning contest. The Coyotes took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning on a RBI triple by Tagney Jones and a RBI double by Alaina Novotny. South Dakota broke the game open with four runs in the third inning, three more in the fourth, and five in the fifth. The big blows were a three-run home run by Michelle Jones in the third inning and a grand slam by Jones in the fifth. Winning pitcher Mel Johnson pitched a four-hit shutout with no walks and nine strikeouts, plus contributed two hits to the Coyotes’ offensive attack. Novotny led the Coyotes with three hits, while Jones and Dani Bahlmann each added two hits. Ashley Evans had two hits for Northwestern.

Doane used a six-run third inning en route to a victory in the opener of its GPAC doubleheader against Dordt. The big hits of the inning two-run double by Chris Kobza and run scoring doubles by Amber Remmers and Whitney Poole. Dordt scored all three of its runs in the bottom of the third inning; two of them on a single by Amber Soodsma. Winning pitcher Jennifer Liddell blanked the Defenders on three hits in her six innings of work. She walked three and struck out three. Kobza supplied a double, single, and three RBIs to the Tigers’ offensive attack and Hannah Kroese had two singles. Soodsma and Sarah Seymour each had two hits for Dordt.

Dordt scored runs in the bottom of the sixth and seventh innings to salvage a split in its GPAC doubleheader against Doane. Doane took a 6-5 lead into the bottom of the sixth inning, but the Defenders tied the score in the sixth when Sarah Seymour walked with the bases loaded. Dordt score the game-winner in the bottom of the seventh when Amanda Nikkel reached on a fielder’s choice and scored on an error by the centerfielder. Dordt scored its first five runs in the second inning to take an early 5-1 advantage. The big hit that inning was a three-run triple by winning pitcher Amber Soodsma. Doane rallied with a four-run fifth inning that featured a two-run triple by Chris Kobza to take a 6-5 lead. Soodsma went three-for-three with a triple and three RBIs to lead Dordt. Dorinda Hibma added a pair of singles to the Defenders’ seven-hit attack. Whitney Poole had a double and single for Doane, while Jennifer Liddell and Kayla Hochstein each had a pair of singles. Soodsma weathered nine hits by the Tigers to get the win. She walked two and struck out four.

Bellevue capitalized on some shaky Morningside defensive play to snap the Mustangs’ six-game winning streak. The Bruins scored three unearned runs in the bottom of the first inning, including two on a home run by Kate Lefler. The Bruins added three more unearned runs in the second inning to open a 6-1 advantage. Their big hit that inning was a two-run double by Kandra Gansz. Morningside scored its run in the second inning on a RBI single by Kayla Clarey. The Bruins’ Kora Behrens pitched a four-hitter with two walks and 14 strikeouts to get the win. Morgan Swanson relieved Mustang starter Amanda VonEhwegen to start the third inning and blanked the Bruins on one hit over the final four innings. She walked two and struck out four. Clarey had two of the Mustangs’ four hits. The big hitters for Bellevue were Gansz with a double and three RBIs and Lefler with her two-run homer.

South Dakota overcame a 5-0 deficit after three innings and won the game with a three-run seventh inning. The Coyotes trailed 5-3 going into the top of the seventh. Jasey Goedeken singled and Lexie Eversley was hit by a pitch to start the inning. Michelle Jones followed with a RBI single to drive in Goedeken and Eversley scored the tying run on the play on a throwing error by the rightfielder. Camille Cruz relieved Charger starter Tara Colt and was greeted by a RBI single by Dani Bahlmann that plated Evesley with what proved to be the winning run. South Dakota had scored two runs in the top of the sixth on RBI singles by Alaina Novotny and Callie Roan to close within 5-3. Briar Cliff gained its early advantage when it scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning and added two more runs in the third. Briar Cliff scored its first run of the game when Reagon Anthony singled and scored on a sacrifice fly by Amanda Arens. The Chargers’ other two runs in the first inning scored after an error by the third baseman and a wild pitch. Briar Cliff used RBI singles by Arens and Joanne Sweeney to score its runs in the third inning. Cortney Heim relieved starter Mel Johnson in the third inning to get the win for the Coyotes. Heim, 11-4, blanked the Chargers on three hits in her 4.1 innings of work. She walked two and struck out six. Colt allowed six runs, of which four were earned, on six hits over six plus innings to take the loss. She walked three and fanned two. Bahlmann went three-for-four with a double to lead the Coyotes, while Arens and Shelby Schmidt each had two hits for Briar Cliff.

South Dakota scored the game’s only run in the top of the fifth inning when Alaina Novotny led off with a double and came home when Michelle Jones reached base on a throwing error by the pitcher that sent Jones all the way to third base. After giving up the unearned run, Dana pitcher Mindy Schoop struck out the next three batters to end the inning. Schoop finished the contest with 14 strikeouts and allowed just four hits and two walks. South Dakota’s Courtney Heim pitched a four-hit shutout with four walks and 10 strikeouts. Novotny had half of the Coyotes’ hits with a double and single, while Brianne Nutty had a double and single for Dana.
