McElrath A Honorable Mention All-American

McElrath, the 2006 NAIA Region III Pitcher of the Year and Great Plains Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Year, posted a 33-12 record with a 1.86 earned run average this season to set a school record for victories in a season. She broke the former Morningside record of 32 triumphs by Jeree Carlson in 1996. McElrath struck out 206 batters in 282 innings pitched while allowing only 40 base on balls and 258 hits. Her 206 strikeouts was the third highest single-season total in Morningside history. McElrath had nine shutouts and 34 complete games in 40 starts.


Aside from her pitching exploits, McElrath was also one of the Mustangs’ best hitters with a .352 batting average with 14 doubles, two triples, three home runs, 42 RBIs, and 42 runs scored.


Morningside posted a 42-15 record during the 2006 season to tie a school record for victories in a season first set in 1994.

Five Mustangs Earn NFCA All-Region Honors

Morningside’s Alisha Krieg, a sophomore outfielder from Kingsley, Iowa; Whitney McElrath, a sophomore pitcher from Moville, Iowa; and Molly Moser, a senior outfielder from Mapleton, Iowa, were all named to the 2006 Louisville Slugger/National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) All-Southwest Region first-team.


In addition, the Mustangs’ Jenna Jurrens, a junior second baseman from George, Iowa; and Kendra Klein, a freshman third baseman from Remsen, Iowa, were named to the all-region second-team.


Krieg batted .340 with eight doubles, four triples, three home runs, and 37 RBIs during the 2006 campaign.


McElrath had a 33-12 pitching record with a 1.86 earned run average. McElrath, who completed 34 of her 40 starts, struck out 206 batters in 282 innings while yielding only 258 hits and 40 base on balls. She was also one of the Mustangs’ most productive offensive players with a .352 batting average with 14 doubles, two triples, three home runs, and 42 RBIs.


Moser hit .309 and led the Mustangs with 16 stolen bases and 22 sacrifices. She had three doubles, four triples, and 19 RBIs.


Jurrens led the Mustangs in almost every offensive category with a .418 batting average, 71 hits, 15 doubles, 12 home runs, 48 RBIs, 23 base on balls, a .753 slugging percentage, and a .490 on-base percentage. She ranked second on the team with 45 runs scored and fourth with three triples.


Klein was the Mustangs’ top freshman addition with a .345 batting average with 11 doubles, two triples, seven home runs, and 45 RBIs.

 

Rohlena And Tuttle Earn Academic Honors

B.J. Rohlena, a junior first baseman from Sioux City, and Megan Tuttle, a junior outfielder from Sioux City, have been named 2006 Daktronics NAIA All-America Scholar-Athletes in the sport of softball.


Rohlena has a 3.85 cumulative grade point average (GPA) with a major in elementary education. Rohlena, who earned similar honors in volleyball this fall, has made Morningside’s Dean’s Honor List after each of her first five collegiate semesters.


Tuttle has a 3.80 cumulative GPA with a major in biology. Tuttle has made Morningside’s Dean’s Honor List after two of her first three collegiate semesters.


Rohlena batted .359 and topped the Mustangs with five triples and 47 runs scored during the 2006 season. She also had eight doubles, eight home runs, 35 RBIs, and 17 base on balls.


Tuttle hit .231 with seven doubles, one triple, 20 RBIs, 19 runs scored, and 13 base on balls.


Daktronics Softball NAIA All-America Scholar-Athletes must be of at least junior status, be a starter or significant reserve, and have a cumulative GPA of 3.50 or higher.

Mustangs Enjoy Record-Setting 2006 Campaign

The 2006 Morningside College softball team was the highest scoring softball squad in school history.


The Mustangs scored 344 runs and had 298 RBIs this past season to break the former Morningside single-season standards of 330 runs and 265 RBIs set during the 1994 campaign.

The Mustangs posted a 42-15 record to tie the 1994 team for the most victories in a season.


Morningside had individual record-breaking performances from Whitney McElrath, a sophomore pitcher from Moville, Iowa, and Molly Moser, a senior outfielder from Mapleton, Iowa.


McElrath fashioned a 33-12 record to break the former Morningside single-season record of 32 pitching wins by Jeree Carlson in 1996. She also led the team with a 1.86 earned run average, nine shutouts, two saves, 282 innings pitched, 206 strikeouts, 48 appearances, 40 starts, and 34 complete games. Her 206 strikeouts and 282 innings pitched were the third highest single-season totals in Morningside history. McElrath allowed only 258 hits and walked only 40 batters in her 282 innings pitched.


Moser had 693 at-bats during her career to break the former Morningside record of 691 career at-bats by Missy Koll from 2000-03. Moser batted .309 this season and led the Mustangs with 22 sacrifices and 16 stolen bases. Her 16 stolen bases was the third highest single-season total in Morningside history.

Jenna Jurrens, a junior second baseman from George, Iowa, was the Mustangs’ leading hitter with 71 hits in 170 at-bats for a .418 batting average for the third highest single-season batting mark and the fourth highest single-season hit total in the Mustangs’ annals. Jurrens also led the Mustangs with 15 doubles, 12 home runs, 48 RBIs, 23 base on balls, a .753 slugging percentage, and a .490 on-base percentage. Her 12 home runs was the second highest single-season total in Morningside history, while her 48 RBIs and 45 runs scored ranked fourth among the Mustangs’ all-time bests.


B.J. Rohlena, a junior first baseman from Sioux City, led the Mustangs with five triples and 47 runs scored. Her 47 runs scored ranked third among Morningside’s all-time bests.


Samantha Fritsch, a freshman pitcher from Neola, Iowa, led the Mustangs in winning percentage with a 9-3 record for a .750 victory rate for the fifth highest single-season winning percentage in Morningside history.


The Mustangs’ toughest player to strike out was Julia Husk, a junior catcher from Littleton, Colo., who fanned only six times in 121 at-bats. Husk has struck out only 12 times in 287 at-bats during her three-year career.

McElrath is joined by Mustang teammate Jenna Jurrens, a junior second baseman from George, Iowa, on the 2006 NAIA All-Region III Softball Team.

Rohlena Receives Academic Honor

Photo of B.J. RohlenaB.J. Rohlena, a junior first baseman from Sioux City, has been named to the second-team of the 2006 ESPN The Magazine College Division Academic All-District 7 Softball Team as selected by College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).


Rohlena has a 3.85 cumulative grade point average (GPA) and is majoring in elementary education.


She is the Mustangs’ second leading hitter this season with a .358 batting average with seven doubles, five triples, seven home runs, 32 RBIs, and 41 runs scored. Rohlena leads the Mustangs with her five triples.


Members of the CoSIDA Academic All-District teams must be a starter or important reserve of at least sophomore status with cumulative GPAs of 3.20 or higher.

Whitney McElrath, a sophomore from Moville, Iowa, is the 2006 Hauff Mid-America Sports/Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) Softball Pitcher of the Year. McElrath is one of three Mustangs named to the first-team of the 2006 All-GPAC Softball Team as selected by the league’s head coaches.


McElrath is joined on the All-GPAC first-team by Morningside teammates Jenna Jurrens, a junior second baseman from George, Iowa, and Molly Moser, a senior outfielder from Mapleton, Iowa.


McElrath and Moser are all repeat selections from last year’s All-GPAC first-team. Jurrens received second-team All-GPAC laurels as a freshman in 2004.


McElrath has a 30-10 record with a 1.68 earned run average this season. She has struck out 188 batters in 249.2 innings pitched while allowing only 31 base on balls and 221 hits. McElrath has eight shutouts and has completed 29 of her 35 starts. Her 30 victories and 188 strikeouts are the third highest single-season totals in Morningside history. She is only two victories shy of the Mustangs’ single-season record of 32 triumphs by Jeree Carlson in 1996.


Aside from her pitching exploits, McElrath is also one of the Mustangs’ best hitters with a .350 batting average with 11 doubles, one triple, three home runs, 38 RBIs, and 37 runs scored.

Jurrens is the Mustangs’ leading hitter with 67 hits in 155 at-bats for a .432 batting average. She also tops the team with 14 doubles, 12 home runs, 45 RBIs, 21 base on balls, a .794 slugging percentage, and a .503 on-base percentage. Her 12 home runs is the second highest single-season total in Morningside history behind the school-record 14 home runs hit by Mindi Prince in 1996, while her 45 RBIs is the fourth highest single-season total in Morningside history.


Moser is batting .299 with three doubles, four triples, 19 RBIs, 37 runs scored, and 14 base on balls and is the team leader with 14 stolen bases and 20 sacrifices. Moser ranks second in Morningside history with 45 career stolen bases, just five thefts behind the Mustangs’ career mark of 50 stolen bases by Jessica Taff from 1995-98.


In addition to their three first-team selections, the Mustangs’ Kendra Klein, a freshman third baseman from Remsen, Iowa, was named to the All-GPAC second-team. Klein is batting .340 with 11 doubles, two triples, six home runs, 41 RBIs, 32 runs scored, and 16 base on balls.


Morningside will take a 39-13 record into this week’s NAIA Region III Championships to be held Wednesday through Friday at Sioux City’s SYA Complex.

McElrath Earns Pitcher Of The Week Honors

Photo of Whitney McElrathWhitney McElrath, a sophomore pitcher from Moville, Iowa, has been named the Hauff Mid-America Sports/Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) and the NAIA Region III Softball Pitcher of the Week for the week of April 24 to 30.


McElrath posted a 6-0 record with an earned run average of 0.88 and struck out 38 batters and walked only six in 40 innings pitched. Three of her wins came by shutout and she did not allow an earned run or walk in her last four starts.


She pitched a three-hitter with no walks and six strikeouts in a 5-1 win in the second game of a doubleheader against the University of Sioux Falls on April 25. McElrath tossed an abbreviated five-inning, three-hit shutout with eight strikeouts and no walks in an 8-0 win in the opener.


McElrath twirled a pair of five-hit shutouts when Morningside swept a doubleheader from Nebraska Wesleyan University by identical 2-0 scores on April 27. She struck out nine batters in the opener to match her season’s high and had five strikeouts in the nightcap. She didn’t walk a batter in either game.


McElrath has a 27-8 record with a 1.40 earned run average and has struck out 171 batters in 214.2 innings this season. Her 27 victories and 171 strikeouts are the third highest single-season totals in Morningside history.


Morningside will take a 35-11 record into this week’s GPAC Championships scheduled for Thursday through Saturday at Hastings, Neb.

Jurrens Earns GPAC And Region III Honors

Photo of Jenna JurrensJenna Jurrens, a junior second baseman from George, Iowa, has been named the Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) and NAIA Region III Softball Player of the Week for the week of April 17 to 23.


Jurrens batted .600 with nine hits in 15 at-bats to lead the Mustangs to doubleheader sweeps of Mount Marty College and Midland Lutheran College. She had three doubles, one triple, nine RBIs, five runs scored, and a slugging percentage of .933.


Jurrens went four-for-four with two doubles, a triple, five RBIs, and two runs scored in the Mustangs’ 10-2 win against Mount Marty on April 19.
