Morningside’s softball team slugged 24 triples during the 2005 season to rank fourth nationally in the NAIA.


The Mustangs were also one of the NAIA’s most productive teams with 94 doubles to rank fifth nationally.


Morningside ranked 16th with 454 hits and with 130 base on balls.
The Mustangs’ pitching staff ranked 14th nationally with 305 strikeouts and 18th with an average of 5.08 strikeouts per game.


Defensively the Mustangs ranked 18th nationally with a team fielding percentage of .957.


Morningside posted a 39-21 record during the 2005 season for a school-record third consecutive 30-win season.

Moser And Rohlena Make All-Region Team

Molly Moser, a junior outfielder from Mapleton, Iowa, and B.J. Rohlena, a sophomore third baseman from Sioux City, have been named to the first-team of the 2005 National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) NAIA All-Midwest Region team.


Moser, a defensive standout noted for her range in centerfield, was also one of the Mustangs’ leading hitters this past season when she collected 72 hits in 210 at-bats for a .343 batting average with 16 doubles, five triples, 25 RBIs, 44 runs scored, 11 base on balls, nine sacrifices, and 10 stolen bases. She was not caught stealing all season.


Her 72 hits was the third highest single-season total in Morningside history and her 44 runs scored was the fourth highest single-season total in the Mustangs’ annals. Aside from leading the team in hits and runs scored, Moser also topped the Mustangs with her 16 doubles and 10 stolen bases.


Rohlena was the Mustangs’ leading hitter during the 2005 campaign with 63 hits in 174 at-bats for a .362 batting average with 11 doubles, six triples, three home runs, 37 RBIs, 32 runs scored, 15 base on balls, nine sacrifices, and one stolen base.


Aside from leading the Mustangs in batting average, Rohlena also topped the team with her 37 RBIs, six triples, a .546 slugging percentage, and a .411 on-base percentage. She owns a .336 career batting average in two seasons with the Mustangs.

Mustangs Post Third Consecutive 30-Win Season

Morningside posted a 39-21 record during the 2005 softball season to give the Mustangs three consecutive 30-win seasons for the first time in school history.


The Mustangs finished 35-19 in 2003 and 30-22 last season.


Morningside also tied a school single-season record with 24 triples to match a total first accomplished in 1996.

Molly Moser, a junior centerfielder from Mapleton, Iowa, put together some of the best offensive numbers in Morningside history in several categories. Moser, who batted .343 en route to All-Great Plains Athletic Conference and NAIA All-Region IV honors, had 72 hits for the third highest single-season total in Morningside history and 44 runs scored for the fourth highest single-season total in the Mustangs’ annals. Moser also topped the Mustangs with 16 doubles and 10 stolen bases. She was perfect in 10 stolen base attempts.


Whitney McElrath, a freshman pitcher from Moville, Iowa, enjoyed a standout rookie season by posting a 22-15 record with a team-leading 1.92 earned run average along with a team-high 195 strikeouts and 244.2 innings pitched. McElrath’s 22 victories and 195 strikeouts were the third highest single-season totals in Morningside history, while her 244.2 innings pitched ranked fourth in school history.


Christianna Nelson, a sophomore pitcher from Edina, Minnesota, also produced one of the top pitching performances in Morningside history. Nelson, who finished 13-4 with a 1.96 earned run average, had the third highest single-season winning percentage in Morningside history at .765. She allowed only 87 hits in 117.2 innings pitched and led the Mustangs’ hurlers by limiting the opposition to a .204 batting average.

Jenna Jurrens, a sophomore shortstop from George, Iowa, topped the Mustangs with 24 base on balls for the third highest single-season total in Morningside history. That came after she established a school record with 29 walks last season.


B.J. Rohlena, a sophomore third baseman from Sioux City, was the Mustangs’ leading hitter with 63 hits in 174 at-bats for a .362 batting average. She also topped the Mustangs with 37 RBIs, six triples, a .546 slugging percentage, and a .411 on-base percentage. Rohlena has a .336 career batting average after her first two seasons with the Mustangs.


Jackie Kinnetz, a senior designated hitter from Emmetsburg, Iowa, was the Mustangs’ top power threat with a team-high five home runs to compliment a .302 batting average.


Julia Husk, a sophomore catcher from Littleton, Neb., led the Mustangs with 17 sacrifices and was the team’s toughest player to strike out with only two strikeouts in 94 at-bats. She finished the season with a streak of 56 consecutive at-bats without a strikeout.

Moser Named To All-Region IV Team

Moser entered this week’s NAIA Region IV Tournament as the Mustangs’ second leading hitter with a team-high 68 hits in 198 at-bats for a .343 batting average. She had 16 doubles, five triples, 24 RBIs, 42 runs scored, 11 base on balls, nine sacrifices, and 10 stolen bases.


Aside from leading the Mustangs with 68 hits, she also topped the team with her 16 doubles, 42 runs scored, and 10 stolen bases. She committed only one error in 53 fielding chances for a .981 fielding percentage as the Mustangs’ centerfielder.


Moser’s exploits helped lead the Mustangs to a 39-21 record this season and a school-record third consecutive 30-win season.

McElrath And Moser Make All-GPAC First-Team

Morningside’s Whitney McElrath, a freshman pitcher from Moville, Iowa, and Molly Moser, a junior outfielder from Mapleton, Iowa, have been named to the first team of the 2005 All-Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) softball team as selected by the league’s head coaches.


In addition to their two first-team selections, the Mustangs’ B.J. Rohlena, a sophomore third baseman from Sioux City, was named to the All-GPAC second team.


McElrath posted a 19-12 record with a 2.15 earned run average, six shutouts, two saves, and 23 complete games in 26 starts during the regular season. She allowed 186 hits in 201.2 innings pitched to go along with 35 walks and 170 strikeouts. McElrath pitched a one-hitter against Dana College for her 20th win during Thursday’s first round contest in the GPAC Tournament to become the Mustangs’ first 20-game winner since Cindy Foland won 21 games in 2001.


Moser was the Mustangs’ top run producer during the regular season with 23 RBIs and a team-high 39 runs scored. Moser collected 64 hits in 182 at-bats for a .352 batting average with a team-high 16 doubles and five triples. Moser also led the Mustangs with eight stolen bases. Moser moved up from last year’s All-GPAC second team.


Rohlena was the Mustangs’ leading hitter during the regular season with 54 hits in 148 at-bats for a .365 batting average with seven doubles, five triples, three home runs, a team-high 31 RBIs, 30 runs scored, 12 base on balls, and one stolen base. Rohlena was an All-GPAC honorable mention selection last year.

Nelson Receives GPAC Honor For Second Time

Photo of Christianna NelsonChristianna Nelson has been named the Hauff Mid-America Sports/Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) Softball Pitcher of the Week.


Nelson, who received the honor for the second time this season, pitched two shutouts last week with a five-hitter in a 1-0 win against Midland Lutheran College on April 25 and a two-hitter in a 1-0 triumph against Bellevue University on April 30. Nelson walked two and struck out three in the Midland Lutheran game and had five walks and four strikeouts against Bellevue.


She is 12-3 with a 1.81 earned run average this season. Nelson has allowed only 77 hits in 104.2 innings pitched. She has 48 walks and 76 strikeouts.

 

Nelson Is GPAC Pitcher Of The Week

Photo of Christianna NelsonChristianna Nelson, a sophomore pitcher from Edina, Minn., is this week’s Hauff Mid-American Sports/Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) Softball Pitcher of the Week.


Nelson went 4-0 with a 0.29 earned run average last week to help the Mustangs improve their season’s record to 22-10. She allowed only nine hits and two runs, one of them earned, in 24 innings. She struck out 18 and walked four.


She pitched a one-hit shutout with two walks and three strikeouts in a 2-0 win against Midland Lutheran College. The win came against a Midland Lutheran team that was ranked 25th nationally in the NAIA. Nelson pitched three-hitters in 4-1 wins against the University of Minnesota-Morris and the University of Minnesota-Crookston. She struck out seven in both games.


Aside from her pitching exploits, Nelson also batted .529 for the week with nine hits in 17 at-bats. She had three doubles, two triples, a home run, and seven RBIs.


Morningside will travel to Sioux Falls, S.D., on Tuesday for a 5 p.m. GPAC doubleheader against the University of Sioux Falls.
