Tom Maxon (Southern Maine ’88) is in his ninth season as Morningside’s head women’s soccer coach and in his eighth season as head coach of the college’s men’s team. He has compiled a 264-224-23 career record in the collegiate ranks, including a 98-93-8 record with the Morningside women and an 84-91-7 mark with the Morningside men. Maxon, the 2007 GPAC Women’s Soccer Coach of the Year, led the Mustang women to NAIA National Tournament appearances in 2006 and 2007. He was named the 2004 GPAC Men’s Soccer Coach of the Year after he led the Mustangs to a share of the league’s regular season championship. He previously coached at St. Mary of the Plains College and National American University.

Morningside is making its seventh appearance in the post-season. The Mustangs have an all-time record of 6-9 in post-season competition.
Morningside shut out Briar Cliff University 2-0 in Tuesday’s opening round of the GPAC Tournament. Both Morningside goals were scored by Hogan Cemper in the second half. Cameron Meter helped set up Cemper’s first goal at the 75-minute mark when he beat the Charger goalkeeper with a low driven shot to the right of the net. Six minutes later Cemper scored his second goal of the match to help send the Mustangs to the semifinals of the GPAC tournament. Daniel Whithorn had one save while guarding the Mustang goal.
Morningside leads the all-time series against Midland Lutheran 8-3 and has won each of the last three meetings, including a 2-1 overtime win in the opening round of the 2007 NAIA Region III Championships.
The last time the Warriors beat Morningside was 2-1 during the 2007 regular season.
Morningside defeated Midland Lutheran 3-1 when the teams met on Oct. 10 in Sioux City during the regular season . Rick Kievits scored twice and Jeremy Lenz added an insurance goal for the Mustangs. Matt Mayfield started at goal keeper and had four saves while only allowing one goal. Rob Capewell, who leads the Warriors with four this season, scored the goal for Midland Lutheran. Capewell scored the game-winner in the Warriors’ 2-1 overtime victory against the University of Sioux in Tuesday’s opening round of action in the GPAC Tournament.

Morningside finished third in the GPAC regular season standings with a 9-3 record and 27 points. . .Hogan Cemper, a senior forward from Bellevue, Neb., has scored three goals in the Mustangs’ last two contests to bring his season total to 16 points. Cemper scored the lone goal in the Mustangs’ 1-0 triumph against No. 19 Hastings College last Tuesday and added two more goals in Morningside’s 2-0 win over Briar Cliff in the first round of the GPAC tournament.. . .Matt Witt, a senior defender from Hastings, Neb., tallied his fourth assist of the season to help set up Cemper’s goal in the Mustangs 1-0 victory against Hastings. . .Rick Kievits, a junior forward from Nieuw Vennep, Netherlands, leads the Mustangs in scoring with 11 goals and four assists for 26 points. Kievits tallied 12 points at North Iowa Area Community College last year to earn honorable mention All-Region XI honors. . .Cameron Meter, a freshman midfielder from Lincoln, Neb., helped set-up Cemper’s first goal in the Mustangs 2-0 win over Briar Cliff on Tuesday with his first assist of the season. . .Daniel Whithorn, a sophomore goal keeper from Omaha, Neb., had his sixth shutout of the season in Tuesday’s win against Briar Cliff. He has allowed an average of only 1.00 goals per game and is challenging the Morningside record of 1.12 goals per game allowed by Brian Schekirke in 2007. Whithorn ranks fourth in Morningside history with 124 career saves.
The winner of the GPAC Tournament will advance to the 2009 NAIA Men’s Soccer National Championships, which will begin with first round matches at various sites across the nation on Saturday, Nov. 21. The GPAC Tournament runner-up will also advance to the NAIA Men’s Soccer National Championships if Hastings, the regular season GPAC champion, is also the winner of the GPAC Tournament.
Daniel Whithorn, a sophomore goal keeper from Omaha, Neb., has been named the Hauff Mid-America Sports/Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) Men’s Soccer Defensive Player of the Week for the week of Oct. 26 to Nov. 1.
Whithorn allowed only one goal in Morningside’s two matches last week as the Mustangs defeated Dordt College 3-1 and upset 19th-ranked Hastings College 1-0 to finish the regular season with an 11-6-1 record and a six-match winning streak against GPAC opponents.
He had five saves in the Mustangs’ win at Hastings to hand the GPAC regular season champions their only league loss of the season. Whithorn had two saves in the Mustangs’ win against Dordt.
Whithorn has five shutouts, 71 saves, and a goals against average of 1.06 goals per game this season.
Jeremy Lenz, a junior midfielder from Lincoln, Neb., has been named to the 2009 ESPN The Magazine College Division Academic All-District VII First-Team as selected by College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
As a first-team all-district selection, Lenz will go on the ballot for the ESPN The Magazine College Division Academic All-America Team.
Lenz has a 3.92 cumulative grade point average (GPA) and is majoring in mathematics teaching.
Lenz is the Mustangs’ second leading scorer this season with three goals and a team-high five assists for 11 points.
Student-athletes must be of at least sophomore athletic and academic status, be a starter or important reserve with legitimate athletic credentials, and have a minimum GPA of 3.30 in order to be eligible for ESPN The Magazine Academic honors.
Rick Kievits, a freshman forward from Nieuw Vennep, Netherlands, has been named the Hauff Mid-America Sports/Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) Men’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week for Oct. 5-11.
Kievits tallied two goals and an assists in the Mustangs’ two matches last week. All came in the Mustangs’ 3-1 victory against Midland Lutheran College last Sunday in Sioux City.
Kievits is the Mustangs’ leading scorer this season with eight goals and four assists for 20 points.

Morningside’s men’s soccer team snapped a three-match losing streak with a 3-1 GPAC victory over Midland Lutheran College on Saturday at Elwood Olsen Stadium.
Rick Kievits played a role in all three goals for the Mustangs, who climbed to 6-5-1 overall and 4-3 in the GPAC. Kievits tallied a pair of goals in the first half, his seventh and eighth of the season, to stake the Mustangs to a 2-0 lead at the intermission.
Kievits and Jake Adams each assisted on a goal by Jeremy Lenz with two minutes left when the Mustangs put the game away.
Morningside dominated the contest with a 16-5 shot advantage. Mustang goal keeper Matt Mayfield came up with four saves while making his first start of the season.
Morningside will travel to Mitchell, S.D., on Wednesday, Oct. 14, for a match against Dakota Wesleyan University.

Daniel Whithorn, a sophomore goal keeper from Omaha, Neb., has been named the Hauff Mid-America Sports/Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) Men’s Soccer Defensive Player of the Week for his performances from Sept. 14-20.
Whithorn did not allow a goal in victories against Northwestern College and Concordia University as the Mustangs extended their winning streak to four matches. He had six saves in a 3-0 win against Northwestern and two saves in a 1-0 triumph against Concordia.
He has played every minute so far this season and has limited the opposition to a scoring average of 0.83 goals per game.
