Morningside placed three players on the honorable mention list of the 2010 All-Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) Men’s Soccer Team as selected by the league’s head coaches.
The three players are Jeremy Lenz, a senior midfielder from Lincoln, Neb.; Chase Maier, a senior defender from Deadwood, S.D.; and Cameron Meter, a sophomore midfielder from Lincoln.
Lenz was the Mustangs’ second leading scorer with four goals and a team-high four assists for 12 points. Lenz dealt 14 assists during his Morningside career for the sixth highest total in school history.
Maier was the defensive standout for a Morningside team that limited its opposition to averages of 2.20 goals and 12.7 shots per game. He also contributed two points to the Mustangs’ offensive attack with a pair of assists.
Meter scored one goal and two assists for four points and provided the game-winning goal in the Mustangs’ 2-1 overtime victory against Iowa Wesleyan College on Sept. 25.
Morningside had a 6-10-2 record and finished seventh in the GPAC standings with a 4-5-2 league mark during the 2010 season.

Two Morningside men's soccer players have been named Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athletesl.
The Mustangs’ men’s soccer Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athletes are:
Daren Koehler, a junior defender from Storm Lake, Iowa. Koehler has a 3.77 cumulative grade point average (GPA) with majors in English and general psychology.
Jeremy Lenz, a senior midfielder from Lincoln, Neb. Lenz has a 3.94 cumulative GPA with a major in mathematics teaching.
Student-athletes must be of at least junior academic status and have a minimum GPA of 3.50 in order to be eligible for Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athlete honors.

Rick Kievits, a senior forward from Nieuw Vennep, Netherlands, was the leading scorer for the Morningside College men’s soccer team during the 2010 season.
Kievits scored a team-high eight goals to go along with three assists en route to a team-high 19 points. All three of his assists came in a 5-1 victory against Dakota Wesleyan University on Sept. 25 when he tied the Mustangs’ single-game record. Kievits supplied the game-winning goal in two of the Mustangs’ six victories.
Kievits scored 20 goals in his two-year Morningside career for the sixth highest total in school history. He finished his career as the seventh leading scorer in the Mustangs’ annals with 47 career points and ranks sixth with four career game-winning goals.
Jeremy Lenz, a senior midfielder from Lincoln, Neb., led the Mustangs with four assists and ranked second on the team with four goals and 12 points.
Lenz dealt 14 assists during his Morningside career for the sixth highest total in Morningside history.
Daniel Whithorn, a junior from Omaha, Neb., was the goal keeper of record in 15 of the Mustangs’ 18 contests. Whithorn had a 5-8-2 record with one shutout, 49 saves, and a goals against average of 2.25 goals per game.
Whithorn is second in the Mustangs’ record book with 18 career goal keeper wins and seven shutouts and ranks third with 175 career saves.
Matt Mayfield, a senior goal keeper from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, had a 1-2 record with 40 saves and a goals against average of 2.05 goals per game.
Mayfield finished his career with 140 saves for the fourth highest total in Morningside history. He ranks fifth in the Mustangs’ record book with seven career goal keeper victories.
Morningside posted a 6-10-2 record during the 2010 season and finished seventh in the Great Plains Athletic Conference standings with a 4-5-2 record.
Erick Ortiz, a freshman forward from Grand Island, Neb., has been named the Hauff Mid-America Sports/Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) Men’s Soccer Player of the Week for his performances last week.
Ortiz helped lead the Mustangs to a 1-1 record last week and scored all three goals in the Mustangs’ 3-2 victory against Dordt College on Sept. 15 in Sioux Center, Iowa, in the Mustangs’ GPAC opener. The three goals, which all came in the second half, were the first three scores of Ortiz’s collegiate career.
Ortiz earned second-team Class B all-state honors when he tallied 12 goals and 14 assists for 38 points as a prep senior at Grand Island Central Catholic High School.
Morningside was picked for a third place finish in the 2010 GPAC Men’s Soccer Coaches’ Pre-Season Poll.
The Mustangs posted a 12-7-1 record and finished third in the GPAC with a 9-3 league mark last season.
Morningside will open the 2010 season with a 3 p.m. contest against William Jewell College on Sunday, Aug. 29, in Liberty, Mo.
