Mustangs Break Four Defensive Records In 2009

The 2009 Morningside College men’s soccer team was the Mustangs’ best defensive team in school history.


The Mustangs allowed only 21 goals this past season for their fewest goals allowed in school history, topping the previous best of 24 goals in the 2007 campaign.
Morningside also set a school record by holding its opposition to an average of 1.04 goals per game to top the previous record of 1.15 goals per in game in 2007. The Mustangs allowed their opposition to get off only 229 shots to top their previous record of 254 shots allowed in 2005.

Daniel Whithorn, a sophomore goal keeper from Omaha, Neb., set a school record by allowing an average of 1.11 goals per game to top the previous Mustang standard of 1.12 goals per game by Brian Schekirke in 2007.


Whithorn had an 11-7 record with 75 saves and six shutouts this season. He ranks third in Morningside history with 13 career goal keeper victories and six shutouts and ranks fourth with 126 career saves.


The Mustangs’ leading scorer was Rick Kievits, a junior forward from Nieuw Vennep, Netherlands, who 12 goals and four assists for 28 points.

Jake Adams, a sophomore forward from Rapid City, S.D., dealt a team-high seven assists and ranked fourth on the Mustangs’ scoring list with nine points.

Hogan Cemper, a senior forward from Bellevue, Neb., finished his career as the sixth leading scorer in Morningside history with 50 career points. Cemper also ranks sixth in Morningside history with 18 career goals and 14 career assists. He was the Mustangs’ second leading scorer this season with seven goals and three assists for 17 points.


Quin Kilgore, a senior midfielder from Lincoln, Neb., finished his career as the ninth leading scorer in Morningside history with 36 career points. He ranks 10th in the Mustangs’ annals with 12 career goals.


Morningside finished the 2009 season with a record of 12-7-1 and finished third in the Great Plains Athletic Conference standings with a 9-3 record.

Three Mustangs Named Scholar-Athletes

Three Morningside College men's soccer players have been named Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athletes.

The Mustangs’ Daktronics-NAIA Soccer Scholar-Athletes are:


Andrew Gross, a senior defender from Omaha, Neb. Gross has a 3.51 cumulative grade point average (GPA) with majors in biology and chemistry. Gross received the honor for the second year in a row.


Jeremy Lenz, a junior midfielder from Lincoln, Neb. Lenz has a 3.92 cumulative GPA and is majoring in mathematics teaching. Lenz earned second-team All-Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) honors and was the Mustangs’ third leading scorer this season with three goals and five assists for 11 points.

Matt Witt, a senior defender from Hastings, Neb. Witt has a cumulative GPA of 3.61 and is majoring in American history and world history teaching. Witt was also a Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athlete in 2008. Witt dealt five assists during the 2009 season and earned honorable mention All-GPAC honors.

Student-athletes must be of at least junior academic status and have a minimum GPA of 3.50 in order to be eligible for Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athlete honors.

Kievits Named To All-GPAC First-Team

Rick Kievits, a junior forward from Nieuw Vennep, The Netherlands, has been named to the 2009 All-Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) Men’s Soccer Team as selected by the league’s head coaches.


Kievits was the Mustangs’ leading scorer this season with 12 goals and four assists for 28 points. He supplied the game winning goal in two of the Mustangs’ 12 victories.


Kievits joined the Mustangs this season as a transfer from North Iowa Area Community College, where he earned honorable mention All-Region XI honors last year.

In addition to Kievits, the Mustangs placed Jeremy Lenz and Chase Maier on the All-GPAC second-team.


Lenz, a junior midfielder from Lincoln, Neb., was the Mustangs’ third leading scorer with three goals and five assists for 11 points.

Maier, a junior defender from Deadwood, S.D., was the defensive standout for a Morningside team that limited its opposition to averages of 1.04 goals and 11.4 shots per game.


Morningside’s Quin Kilgore, Ty Thackston, Travis Ward, Daniel Whithorn, and Matt Witt were all named to the All-GPAC honorable mention list.

Kilgore, a senior midfielder from Lincoln, Neb., scored four goals for eight points.


Thackston, a junior forward from Lansing, Kan., scored one goal for two points.


Ward, a junior defender from Omaha, Neb., and Witt, a senior defender from Hastings, Neb., were defensive standouts for a Morningside team that set a school record by allowing an average of only 1.04 goals per game. Witt also contributed five points to the Mustangs’ offensive attack with five assists, while Ward scored one goal for two points.


Whithorn, a sophomore goal keeper from Omaha, had an 11-7 record with six shutouts, 75 saves, and a goals against average of 1.11 goals per game.

Morningside posted a 12-7-1 record and finished third in the GPAC with a 9-3 league record during the 2009 season.

Whithorn Named GPAC Defensive Player Of The Week

Daniel Whithorn, a sophomore goal keeper from Omaha, Neb., has been named the Hauff Mid-America Sports/Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) Men’s Soccer Defensive Player of the Week for the week of Oct. 26 to Nov. 1.


Whithorn allowed only one goal in Morningside’s two matches last week as the Mustangs defeated Dordt College 3-1 and upset 19th-ranked Hastings College 1-0 to finish the regular season with an 11-6-1 record and a six-match winning streak against GPAC opponents.


He had five saves in the Mustangs’ win at Hastings to hand the GPAC regular season champions their only league loss of the season. Whithorn had two saves in the Mustangs’ win against Dordt.


Whithorn has five shutouts, 71 saves, and a goals against average of 1.06 goals per game this season.

 

 

 

Lenz Named To Academic All-District First-Team

Jeremy Lenz, a junior midfielder from Lincoln, Neb., has been named to the 2009 ESPN The Magazine College Division Academic All-District VII First-Team as selected by College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).


As a first-team all-district selection, Lenz will go on the ballot for the ESPN The Magazine College Division Academic All-America Team.

Lenz has a 3.92 cumulative grade point average (GPA) and is majoring in mathematics teaching.


Lenz is the Mustangs’ second leading scorer this season with three goals and a team-high five assists for 11 points.

Student-athletes must be of at least sophomore athletic and academic status, be a starter or important reserve with legitimate athletic credentials, and have a minimum GPA of 3.30 in order to be eligible for ESPN The Magazine Academic honors.

 

 

Kievits Receives Weekly GPAC Honor

Rick Kievits, a freshman forward from Nieuw Vennep, Netherlands, has been named the Hauff Mid-America Sports/Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) Men’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week for Oct. 5-11.


Kievits tallied two goals and an assists in the Mustangs’ two matches last week. All came in the Mustangs’ 3-1 victory against Midland Lutheran College last Sunday in Sioux City.


Kievits is the Mustangs’ leading scorer this season with eight goals and four assists for 20 points.

 

 

 

 

 

Whithorn Is GPAC Defensive Player Of The Week

Daniel Whithorn, a sophomore goal keeper from Omaha, Neb., has been named the Hauff Mid-America Sports/Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) Men’s Soccer Defensive Player of the Week for his performances from Sept. 14-20.


Whithorn did not allow a goal in victories against Northwestern College and Concordia University as the Mustangs extended their winning streak to four matches. He had six saves in a 3-0 win against Northwestern and two saves in a 1-0 triumph against Concordia.


He has played every minute so far this season and has limited the opposition to a scoring average of 0.83 goals per game.
