Mustangs Tie Four School Records During 2006 Campaign

Morningside College’s men’s soccer team tied four school records during the 2006 season.


The Mustangs tied a team single-match record with nine assists and tied a record for largest margin of victory at seven goals in an 8-1 victory against Concordia University on Oct. 21.

Jacob Adams, a freshman forward from Rapid City, S.D., tied the Mustangs’ single-match scoring record with four goals and Tobias Tessmer, a junior midfielder from Magdeburg, Germany, tied the Mustangs’ single-match assist record with three assists in the Oct. 21 win against Concordia.


Quin Kilgore, a freshman midfielder from Lincoln, Neb., also tied the Mustangs’ single-match assist record with three assists in a 4-2 win against Dordt College on Oct. 3.


Adams was the Mustangs’ leading scorer with nine goals and four assists for 22 points. His nine goals and 22 points were the 10th highest single-season totals in Morningside history.


While Adams led the Mustangs in goals and assists, Tessmer topped the team in assists with six.


Brandon Wylie, a senior midfielder from Sioux Falls, S.D., was the Mustangs’ second leading scorer with six goals and five assists for 17 points. He finished his career in fourth place on the college’s all-time assist list with 16 and ranks fifth in Morningside history with 23 career goals and 62 career points.

Brian Schekirke, a junior goal keeper from Bellevue, Neb., was the Mustangs’ goal keeper of record in all but two of their matches. He had a 6-9-2 record with 107 saves, one shutout, and a goals against average of 1.96 goals per game. His 107 saves and 1.96 goals against average were the fourth best single-season marks in Morningside history.


Schekirke ranks second in Morningside history with 2.4 career shutouts and third with 119 career saves and eight career goal keeper wins.


Morningside posted a 6-11-2 record and qualified for the NAIA Region III Championships during the 2006 season.

Matt Steffens, a senior defender from Lincoln, Neb., and Brandon Wylie, a senior midfielder from Sioux Falls, S.D., were both named to the honorable mention list of the 2006 NAIA All-America Men’s Soccer Team.


Steffens, a four-year starter, was the defensive standout for a Morningside team that limited its opposition to a scoring average of 1.95 goals per game. He also contributed an assist to the Mustangs’ scoring attack.


Wylie was Morningside’s second leading scorer with six goals and five assists for 17 points.


He finished his career as the fifth leading scorer in Morningside history with 23 career goals and 62 career points. Wylie ranks fourth in the Mustangs’ record book with 16 career assists.


Morningside posted a 6-11-2 record during the 2006 season and was one of six teams to qualify for the NAIA Region III Championships.

Tessmer Is NAIA All-America Scholar-Athlete

Photo of Tobias TessmerTobias Tessmer has been named 2006 Daktronics Men's Soccer NAIA All-America Scholar-Athlete.


Tessmer, a junior midfielder from Magdeburg, Germany, has a 3.61 cumulative grade point average and is majoring in business administration with an emphasis in international trade. He was the Mustangs’ sixth leading scorer this season with one goal and six assists for 12 points.

 
Daktronics NAIA Scholar-Athletes must be of junior or senior status and have cumulative GPAs of 3.50 or higher.

Matt Steffens and Brandon Wylie were each named to the first-team of the 2006 All-Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) Men’s Soccer Team as selected by the league’s head coaches.


Steffens, a senior defender from Lincoln, Neb., was a defensive standout for a Morningside team that has limited its opposition to a scoring average of 1.95 goals per game. Steffens, a four-year starter, also contributed one point to the Mustangs’ offensive attack with an assist.


Wylie, a senior midfielder from Sioux Falls, S.D., was the Mustangs’ second leading scorer with six goals and five assists for 17 points. He earned second-team All-GPAC, All-NAIA Region III, and honorable mention NAIA All-America honors last year.


Wylie ranks fifth in Morningside history with 23 career goals and 62 career points and is fourth with 16 career assists.


Aside from their two first-team selections, the Mustangs’ Jacob Adams, a freshman forward from Rapid City, S.D., was named to the All-GPAC second-team.


Adams was the Mustangs’ leading scorer with nine goals and four assists for 22 points. He tied a Morningside single-match scoring record with four goals in the Mustangs’ 8-1 victory against Concordia University on Oct. 21.


Morningside’s Brian Schekirke, Matt Stachowitz, and Tobias Tessmer were all named to the All-GPAC honorable mention list.


Schekirke, a junior goal keeper from Bellevue, Neb., had a 6-9-2 record with one shutout, 107 saves, and a goals against average of 1.96 goals per game.


Stachowitz, a junior defender from La Crosse, Wis., is a three-year starter.

Adams Is GPAC And Region III Player Of The Week

Photo of Jacob AdamsJacob Adams, a freshman forward from Rapid City, S.D., is this week’s Hauff Mid-America Sports/Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) and NAIA Region III Men’s Soccer Player of the Week for his performance from Oct. 2 to 8.


Adams went for a hat trick with three goals in the Mustangs’ 4-2 victory against Dordt College on Oct. 3 at Sioux Center, Iowa, to help Morningside snap a six-match losing streak.

Adams is the Mustangs’ leading scorer this season with five goals and two assists for 12 points.
