Repeats As Mustangs' Scoring Leader During 2003 Campaign

Brandon
Newland, a sophomore defender from Lincoln, Neb., has been
named a NAIA honorable mention All-American in men's soccer.
Newland is the first
soccer player in Morningside history to ever receive All-America
recognition.
Newland was the defensive
standout for a Morningside team that limited its opponents
to an average of 2.17 goals per game during the 2003 season.
He was named to the
All-Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) first team earlier
this year.
Newland is a two-year
starter for the Mustangs.
Morningside posted
a 10-14 record during the 2003 season and earned its first-ever
berth in the NAIA Region IV Playoffs, where it lost in the
semifinals against NAIA National Tournament qualifier Hastings
College.

For the second season
in a row, Chris Johnson was the leading scorer for
the Morningside College men's soccer team.
Johnson, a sophomore
forward from Lincoln, Neb., paced the Mustangs with 18 goals,
12 assists, and 48 points during the recently completed 2003
season.
Johnson's best effort
came in the Mustangs' 8-2 victory against the University of
Mary on Sept. 14 when he set a Morningside single-match scoring
record with nine points. Johnson scored three goals and three
assists in the win against Mary.
Johnson's 18 goals,
12 assists, and 48 points were all single-season records for
the Mustangs' three-year varsity program.
Johnson, the Mustangs'
scoring leader with 42 points during the 2002 campaign, has
tallied 33 goals and 24 assists for 90 points during his two-year
career.
Tim McCabe,
a sophomore midfielder from Lincoln, set a Morningside record
by scoring a goal in four consecutive matches from Sept. 28
to Oct. 7. McCabe was the Mustangs' third leading scorer with
10 goals and eight assists for 28 points.

Joel Nelson,
a sophomore forward from Bremerton, Wash., also had a big
offensive season for the Mustangs with 12 goals and six assists
for 30 points. He led the team with four game winning goals.
Nelson has tallied 25 goals and 12 assists for 62 points in
two seasons with the Mustangs.
Jesse Miech,
a sophomore goal keeper from Stevens Point, Wis., set Morningside
records with 3.9 shutouts and two consecutive shutouts in
the Mustangs' 5-0 win against Concordia University on Oct.
4 and their 2-0 triumph against Northwestern College on Oct.
7. Miech finished the season with a 10-14 record, 136 saves,
and a goals against average of 2.18 goals per game.

soccer first-team as selected by the league's men's soccer
coaches.
Johnson, a sophomore
forward from Lincoln , Neb. , is the Mustangs' leading scorer
with 17 goals and 12 assists for 46 points.
Newland, a sophomore
defender from Lincoln , Neb. , is the defensive standout for
a Mustang team that has limited its opponents to an average
of 2.29 goals per game.
Morningside placed
Tim McCabe and Matt Steffens on the All-GPAC
second team.
McCabe, a sophomore
midfielder from Lincoln , Neb. , is third on the Mustangs'
scoring chart with 10 goals and seven assists for 27 points.
Steffens is a freshman
defender from Lincoln , Neb. , and one of only two freshmen
tabbed to the first or second team.
In addition, Morningside's
Jesse Miech and Joel Nelson earned honorable
mention All-GPAC recognition.
Nelson, a sophomore
forward from Bremerton , Wash. , is the Mustangs' second leading
scorer with 12 goals and five assists for 29 points.
Miech, a sophomore
goal keeper from Stevens Point , Wis. , has 112 saves, 2.9
shutouts, and a goals against average of 2.31 goals per game.
