 Kelly Schmidt became the Mustangs' men's and women's golf
head coach in January of 2005.
Schmidt came to Morningside from Whispering Creek Golf Club
in Sioux City, where he was the head golf professional. He
had previously been an assistant golf pro at Whispering Creek.
Schmidt played collegiately at Westmar University in Le Mars,
Iowa, during the 1996-97 season and had a 78.4-stroke scoring
average to help lead the Eagles to the South Dakota-Iowa Conference
(SDIC) championship and their only NAIA National Tournament
appearance in school history.
He was a three-year varsity letterwinner when he attended
Sioux City East High School. Schmidt fashioned a 38.8-stroke
scoring average per nine holes and helped lead the Black Raiders
to a third place finish at the Class 3A state tournament during
his senior year. He was the individual medalist at three tournaments.
Schmidt attended Maurice-Orange City/Floyd Valley High School
as a freshman and helped lead the Dutchmen to a second place
finish at Iowa's Class 2A state tournament.
