Morningside men’s golf head coach Todd Sapp has announced the names of six high school recruits who will join the Mustangs next season.
The recruits are:
Jeremy Gardner of Chadron, Neb. Gardner is a 2010 graduate of Chadron High School, where he was a four-year varsity letterwinner and a first-team All-Western Conference performer as a senior. Gardner, who earned honorable mention all-area honors from the Scottsbluff Star-Herald, finished sixth in the individual standings at the Western Conference tournament with a 79 to lead Chadron to a second place finish in the team standings.
Tyler Hunt of Cascade, Colo. Hunt is a 2010 graduate of Manitou Springs High School, where he had an 18-hole scoring average of 75 and earned all-state honorable mention and All-Tri Peaks League honors this past season. Hunt was this year’s Tri Peaks League medalist and individual champion at the CSCS and Rye Invitationals. He finished fourth in the individual standings at this year’s Class 3A state tournament with rounds of 92 and 71 for a 163. His one-under-par 71, which included five birdies, on the second day of the tournament was the best score in the field by a four-stroke margin. Hunt’s opening round 92 came in adverse weather conditions on a day when only three players in the field broke 80. Hunt was the individual runner-up at his regional tournament with a 76.
Hunt finished 22nd at the Class 3A state tournament with rounds of 81 and 87 for a 168 as a junior. He was a Class 4A state tournament alternate as a sophomore.
Andrew King of Treynor, Iowa. King is a 2010 graduate of Treynor Community High School. He finished fifth at this year’s Class 1A state tournament with scores of 79 and 77 for a 156 to lead Treynor to a third place finish in the team standings. King was named a second-team Class 1A all-stater by the Iowa High School Golf Coaches Association (IHSGCA).
King was a first-team IHSGCA Class 1A all-stater as a junior when he led Treynor to a runner-up finish at the state tournament. He finished fourth at his sectional tournament with a 77 and finished sixth in the individual standings at the state tournament with rounds of 79 and 80 for a 159.
Sean Manley of South Sioux City, Neb. Manley is a 2010 graduate of South Sioux City High School, where he was the Cardinals’ No. 1 golfer for the past two seasons. He competed in the Class A state tournament as a freshman and carded scores of 96 and 93 for a 189.
Matt Pitts of Cherokee, Iowa. Pitts is a 2010 graduate of Cherokee Washington High School, where he had a nine-hole scoring average of 38.9 this past season en route to second-team IHSGCA Class 2A all-state honors. He was a Class 2A sectional tournament medalist with a 76.
Pitts set a school record with a nine-hole score of 33 during his prep career. He was a district tournament medalist and carded scores of 85 and 90 for a 172 at the Class 2A state tournament to help lead Cherokee Washington to a sixth place in the team standings as a sophomore.
Alex Vanderhoff of Newell, Iowa. Vanderhoff is a 2010 graduate of Newell-Fonda High School, where he averaged 39 strokes per nine holes over his varsity career and was a four-time All-Northwest Conference performer. He earned second-team IHSGCA Class 1A all-state honors this past season and finished 10th at the Class 1A state tournament with rounds of 76 and 83 for a 159. He was the top scorer for a Newell-Fonda team that finished fifth in the team standings at the state tourney. Vanderhoff was the runner-up medalist at his sectional tournament with a 74.
He also finished 10th at the Class 1A state tournament as a junior with rounds of 84 and 79 for a 163 and was a sectional runner-up with a 78. Vanderhoff had scores of 88 and 88 for a 176 to help lead Newell-Fonda to a second place finish at the Class 1A state tournament during his sophomore campaign. As a freshman, Vanderhoff had scores of 83 and 88 for a 171 to help lead Newell-Fonda to a fourth place finish at the Class 1A state tourney.
Morningside finished second in the Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) standings during the 2009-10 fall and spring seasons to qualify for the NAIA Men’s Golf National Championship as a team for the first time in school history.
Morningside shot a 325 in Thursday’s third round of the 2010 NAIA Men’s Golf National Championships at TPC Deere Run in Silvis, Ill., to finish the tournament with a three-round total of 959.
The Mustangs carded scores of 312 on Tuesday and 322 on Wednesday.
The Mustangs finished the tournament in 27th place. The tournament field was cut after 54 holes to the top 17 teams and 40 individuals (including ties) for Friday’s final round.
Dave Young had the Mustangs top score on Thursday with a 79 and led the team at the tournament with a three-round total of 229 for 41st place in the individual standings. Young had a 72 on Tuesday and a 78 on Wednesday. Tuesday’s 72 was Young’s top score this spring.
Cam Jacobs was the Mustangs’ second best finisher with rounds of 75, 74, and 83 for a 232.

Matt Ford, a senior from Rice, Minn., has been named a Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athlete in the sport of men’s golf.
Ford has a 3.67 cumulative grade point average (GPA) with a major in business administration.
Ford has a scoring average of 81.4 strokes per 18 holes and is competing for the Mustangs at the 2010 NAIA Men’s Golf National Championships at TPC Deere Run in Silvis, Ill. He had a 79.8-stroke average during the spring season while splitting time between golf and tennis, where he was the Mustangs’ No. 1 singles player and earned first-team All-Great Plains Athletic Conference honors in both singles and doubles.
Student-athletes must be of at least junior academic status and have a minimum GPA of 3.50 in order to be eligible for Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athlete honors.

Cam Jacobs, Brady Nurse, and Dave Young were all named to the All-Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) Men’s Golf Team as selected by the league’s head coaches.
Jacobs, a senior from Sioux City, leads the Mustangs with a scoring average of 76.3 strokes per 18 holes. He led the Mustangs in both the fall and spring seasons with a scoring average of 76.4 in the fall and 76.1 in the spring. Jacobs finished third in the final individual standings from this year’s four GPAC Qualifier tournaments with a total of 305 strokes. He was the medalist at the Morningside Invitational with a 70 and the Midland Lutheran GPAC Qualifier with a 73 during the fall season.
Nurse, a senior from Grimes, Iowa, has a 79.2-stroke scoring average and was the co-medalist at the Buena Vista Invitational with a 74 during the fall season. Nurse finished eighth in the final GPAC individual standings with a 315.
Young, a junior from Hinton, Iowa, finished 16th in the GPAC individual standings with a 327. He has a scoring average of 79.7, including a 76.5 average during the fall season.
Morningside finished second in the combined scoring from the four GPAC Qualifier tournaments to earn a berth in the 2010 NAIA Men’s Golf National Championship to be played May 18-21 at TPC Deere Run at Silvis, Ill., hosted by the Quad Cities of Illinois and Iowa.

Morningside finished fifth at the final GPAC Men’s Golf Qualifier of the 2009-10 season on Tuesday at Prairie Green Golf Course in Sioux Falls, S.D., and secured a berth in the 2010 NAIA Men’s Golf National Championships in the process.
The Mustangs carded a team score of 1,250 in the four qualifier tournaments to finish tied with Dakota Wesleyan University for second place in the team standings. Nebraska Wesleyan University finished first with a 1,241. The top two teams in the final standings, with the exception of NCAA Division III Nebraska Wesleyan, earned berths in the 2010 NAIA National Championships slated for May 18-21 at TPC at Deere Run in Silvis, Ill.
Morningside had a 323 at Tuesday’s qualifier to finish three strokes out of third place and 22 shots behind team champion Dakota Wesleyan, which had a 301.
Cam Jacobs and Matt Ford each had 79s to lead the Mustangs, followed by Austin Vanderhoff with an 81 and Brady Nurse with an 84.
Jacobs finished third in the individual standings in the combined scoring with a four-round total of 305 and Nurse finished eighth with a 315.

Cam Jacobs, a senior from Sioux City, has been named the Hauff Mid-America Sports/Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) Men’s Golfer of the Week for Oct. 5 to Oct. 11.
Jacobs was the individual medalist at the GPAC Men’s Qualifier No. 2 held on Oct.6 at Wilderness Ridge Golf Course in Lincoln, Neb. Jacobs carded a two-over par 73 and took over the overall lead in the medalist race with a 36-hole total of 144. He has a five-stroke cushion over Luke Vermeer of Northwestern College, who is in second place at 149.
The final two GPAC Qualifier tournaments for the 2009-10 season will be played this spring. The combined scores from the four tournaments will determine final conference standings and NAIA National Tournament qualifiers.
Jacobs finished the fall season with an 18-hole scoring average of 76.4 for the Mustangs’ best average.

Morningside College dominated the second Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) Men Golf Qualifier tournament held Tuesday at Wilderness Ridge Golf Course in Lincoln, Neb.
The Mustangs carded a team score of 312 to win the tournament by a 16-stroke margin over runner-up University of Sioux Falls. The Mustangs were co-champions of this year’s first GPAC Qualifier when they shared the title with Nebraska Wesleyan University. Two more GPAC Qualifiers will be played during the spring season.
The combined scores from the four tourneys will determine the final conference standings and the GPAC’s representatives at the 2010 NAIA Men’s Golf Championships.
Only four players broke 80 in Tuesday’s tourney on a day when cold and windy conditions led to an average score of 90.3.
Morningside’s Cam Jacobs, a senior from Sioux City, was the individual medalist with a two-over par 73 and is the combined individual leader with a two-round total of 144. Brayden Nurse, a senior from Grimes, Iowa, also broke 80 with a 79 for the day’s fourth best score. Dave Young, a junior from Hinton, Iowa, and Kevin Zoz, a sophomore from Murdock, Neb., each carded 80’s to tie for fifth place in the individual standings.
Morningside is in first place after the first two GPAC Qualifiers with a team score of 605 for a 20-stroke cushion over Nebraska Wesleyan, which is in second place with a 625. Jacobs tops the individual standings with a one-over par 144 for a five-stroke advantage over Luke Vermeer of Northwestern College.

Morningside and Nebraska Wesleyan are tied for first place after the first of four GPAC Men’s Golf Qualifiers to be held over the fall and spring seasons.
The Mustangs and Prairie Wolves each carded team scores of 293 to share team honors at Qualifier No. 1 held Thursday at Landsmeer Golf and Country Club in Orange City, Iowa. The top two teams in the combined four tournaments will each advance to next spring’s 2010 NAIA Men’s Golf Championships.
Cam Jacobs fired an even-par 71 to lead the Mustangs at Thursday’s tourney to put him third in the individual standings, three strokes off the pace of first round leader Kyle Jaacks of Nebraska Wesleyan.
Mustangs’ Brady Nurse and Dave Young each carded 73s to put them in a tie for seventh place in the individual standings. The Mustangs completed their team score with a 76 by Austin Vanderhoff.
Morningside will compete in the Briar Cliff Invitational on Wednesday, Sept. 23.

Cam Jacobs carded a two-under par 70 to cop medalist honors and lead Morningside to a first place finish at the Morningside Invitational men’s golf tournament on Tuesday at Whispering Creek Golf Club.
Jacobs went three-under par with a 33 on the front nine before closing with a 37 on the back side. Jacobs’ round featured an eagle three on the eighth hole. He had birdies on the par 3 second hole, the par 4 fifth hole, and the par 5 16th hole.
Morningside finished with a 307 to finish ahead of Briar Cliff (318) and Northwestern (319).
Aside from Jacobs’ medalist round of 70, the Mustangs also counted a 76 by Dave Young, an 80 by Kevin Zoz, and an 81 by Austin Vanderhoff. Young's 76 placed him third in the individual standings, while Zoz finished in a tie for ninth.
Morningside players Seth McCauley, Matt Ford, and Bob Sapp all finished in the top 10 with scores of 79, 80, and 80, respectively.
The Mustangs will compete in the Dordt Invitational on Thursday in Sioux Center, Iowa.

Nurse was the individual medalist with a two-over par 74 at last Friday’s Buena Vista University Invitational held at Lake Creek Country Club in Storm Lake, Iowa.
Nurse led the Mustangs to a third place finish in the team standings as Morningside finished only three strokes out of first place.
Morningside will compete in the Dordt College Invitational on Thursday in Sioux Center, Iowa.
