Eddie Ceaser
and Brad Schmit were named Co-Most Valuable Players
of the Morningside College men’s basketball team at
the Mustangs’ post-season awards banquet held April
3 at Dakota Dunes Country Club.
Ceaser, a 6-3 junior guard from Minneapolis, Minn., averaged
16.0 points and 3.9 rebounds per game. He led the Mustangs
with 142 assists and 57 steals for averages of 4.6 assists
and 1.8 steals per game. Ceaser also topped the Mustangs in
field goal accuracy with 185 field goals in 346 attempts for
53.5 percent. He made 14 of 42 3-point field goal attempts
for 33.3 percent and 111 of 155 free throw attempts for 71.6
percent.
He had the Mustangs’ top single-game scoring performance
of the season with 33 points in the Mustangs’ 90-89
victory against Concordia University on Feb. 21.
Ceaser has scored 840 points during his two-year Morningside
career to rank 33rd on the school’s all-time career
scoring list.
Ceaser was a third-team NAIA Division II All-American as well
as a first-team All-Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC)
performer.
Schmit, a 6-3 sophomore guard from Jesup, Iowa, also earned
first-team All-GPAC honors this season after he led the Mustangs
in scoring with a 17.5-point average to compliment a norm
of 4.5 rebounds per game.
Schmit made a school-record 91 3-point field goals to break
the former Morningside single-season standard of 88 3-pointers
by Chris Kuhlmann in 1990-91. Schmit also led the Mustangs
in 3-point accuracy with 91 treys in 200 attempts for 45.5
percent and in free throw accuracy with 92 free throws in
118 attempts for 78.0 percent. He made 180 of 394 overall
field goal attempts for 45.7 percent.
Schmit, a two-year starter, has climbed into 24th place on
Morningside’s all-time scoring list with 896 career
points.
Paul Larsen received the Mustangs’ Defensive
Player of the Year Award, while Tim Johnson received
the Mustangs’ Most Improved Player Award.
Larsen, a 6-0 sophomore guard from Neola, Iowa, averaged 1.6
points and 1.6 rebounds per game in 28 contests.
Johnson, a 6-4 sophomore forward from Fairfield, Neb., averaged
3.7 points and 2.1 rebounds per game in 30 contests. Johnson
was one of the Mustangs’ most accurate shooters with
41 field goals in 80 attempts for 51.3 percent.
Morningside posted an 18-13 record during the 2003-04 season,
including a 14-4 ledger in GPAC play, to share the league’s
regular season championship with Northwestern College.
Roush
Named NAIA All-America Scholar-Athlete
Mark
Roush, a 6-5 senior forward from Marshalltown, Iowa, has been
named a 2004 Daktronics-NAIA Men’s Basketball All-America
Scholar-Athlete.
Roush has a 3.60 cumulative grade point average (GPA) with
a major in computer science.
Roush also received NAIA All-America Scholar-Athlete honors
last year.
Daktronics-NAIA All-America Scholar-Athletes must have junior
or senior academic standing and maintain a minimum cumulative
GPA of 3.50 or higher.
Roush averaged 9.8 points and a team-high 5.8 rebounds per
game this past season. He had 76 assists, 37 steals, and 13
blocked shots. Roush made 109 of 247 field goal attempts for
44.1 percent, 51 of 134 3-point field goal attempts for 38.1
percent, and 36 of 47 free throw attempts for 76.6 percent.
Roush, a three-year starter, finished with career totals of
952 points and 635 rebounds for career averages of 10.3 points
and 6.9 rebounds per game. He is the 17th leading all-time
scorer in Morningside history.
He helped lead the Mustangs to an 18-13 overall record during
the 2003-04 season, including a 14-4 mark in the GPAC as the
Mustangs shared the league’s regular season championship
with Northwestern College.

Morningside College’s
men’s basketball team was one of the most improved teams
in the nation during the 2003-04 campaign.
The Mustangs made a triumphant entry into the Great Plains
Athletic Conference (GPAC) by posting a 14-4 record in their
first season as a GPAC member to share the league’s
regular season championship with Northwestern College. Morningside,
which finished with an overall mark of 18-13, had been tabbed
for a 12th place finish in the 13-team GPAC based on its record
of 10-22 the year before.
Morningside
had one school record breaking performance during the 2003-04
season courtesy of Brad Schmit. Schmit, a 6-3 sophomore
guard from Jesup, Iowa, made 91 3-point field goals to erase
Morningside’s previous single-season record of 88 3-pointers
in a season set by Chris Kuhlmann in 1990-91. Schmit also
led the Mustangs in 3-point field goal accuracy with 91 treys
in 200 attempts for 45.5 percent.
Schmit finished the season as the Mustangs’ leading
scorer with an average of 17.5 points per game and was the
team’s leading scorer in 15 of their 31 games. Schmit
also topped the Mustangs in free throw accuracy with 92 free
throws in 118 attempts for 78.0 percent.

rebounding for the third year in a row. He was the Mustangs’
leading rebounder in 14 of their 31 games and had the team’s
top individual rebounding performance of the season with 11-board
hauls in games against William Penn University on Nov. 13
and Dana College on Feb. 24.

of 14.2 points per game over the past two seasons. He is in
33rd place on Morningside’s all-time scoring list.
Seth Thomas, a 6-3 sophomore forward from Longmont,
Colo., was the Mustangs’ blocked shots leader with 25
rejections for an average of 0.8 per game.

the NAIA Division II Men’s Basketball All-America third-team
announced March 16.
Ceaser is the first men’s basketball player in Morningside
history to earn NAIA All-America honors.
Ceaser averaged 16.0 points and 3.9 rebounds per game and
led the Mustangs with 142 assists and 57 steals for averages
of 4.6 assists and 1.8 steals per game this past season. He
ranked second on the team with 22 blocked shots. Ceaser led
the Mustangs in field goal accuracy with 185 hoops in 346
attempts for 53.5 percent. He made 14 of 42 3-point field
goal attempts for 33.3 percent and 111 of 155 free throw attempts
for 71.6 percent.
He had the Mustangs’ top individual scoring performance
of the season with 33 points against Concordia University
on Feb. 21. His top rebound effort of the season was a 10-carom
performance against Dana College on Feb. 18.
Ceaser, a two-year letterwinner, is the 33rd leading scorer
in Morningside history with 840 career points. He has averaged
14.2 points, 4.4 rebounds, and 3.1 assists per game during
his Morningside career.
His exploits helped lead the Mustangs to an 18-13 record and
a share of the Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) regular
season championship with a 14-4 league mark during the 2003-04
campaign.

a 6-3 sophomore guard from Jesup, Iowa, were each named to
the first-team of the 2004 All-Great Plains Athletic Conference
(GPAC) men’s basketball team as selected by the league’s
head coaches.
In addition, Morningside interim head men’s basketball
coach Jim Sykes was named the GPAC Coach of the Year after
he helped lead the Mustangs to a share of the regular season
GPAC championship.

in 200 attempts for 45.5 percent. Schmit’s 91 3-pointers
broke the former Morningside record of 88 3-pointers by Chris
Kuhlman during the 1990-91 season. Schmit was also the Mustangs’
best free throw shooter with 92 free throws in 118 attempts
for 78.0 percent.

Schmit is tied with
1972 graduate Rick Weaver for 24th place on Morningside’s
all-time scoring list with 896 career points. He has averaged
14.7 points per game and made 155 of 363 3-point field goal
attempts for 42.7 percent during his Morningside career.
In addition to their two first-team selections, the Mustangs’
Mark Roush, a 6-5 senior forward from Marshalltown, Iowa,
was named to the All-GPAC honorable mention list.
Roush was the Mustangs’ leading rebounder with an average
of 5.8 rebounds per game to compliment a scoring average of
9.8 ppg. He ranked second on the team with 76 assists and
was one of the Mustangs’ best free throw shooters with
36 gift shots in 47 attempts for 76.6 percent.
He grabbed 11 rebounds in games against William Penn University
and Dana College this season for the Mustangs’ top individual
rebound total of the season.
Roush, a three-year starter, is the 17th leading scorer in
Morningside history with 952 career points. Roush, who also
amassed 635 career rebounds, averaged 10.3 points and 6.9
rebounds per game during his Morningside career.

Sykes, in his third
year on the Mustangs’ coaching staff, was named interim
head coach after head coach Jerry Schmutte took a medical
leave of absence. Schmutte had been sidelined for the majority
of the season with a back ailment. The Mustangs had a 9-3
record after Sykes was named interim head coach en route to
an 18-13 record. Morningside, which was ranked 22nd in the
nation in the final regular season NAIA Division II poll,
posted a 14-4 record in the GPAC to share the regular season
championship with Northwestern College.

Morningside is ranked
22nd nationally in the final NAIA Division II regular season
poll released Feb. 24.
The Mustangs posted a 17-12 record during the regular season
and finished 14-4 in the GPAC to share the league’s
regular season title with defending NAIA Division II National
Champion Northwestern College.
The Mustangs debuted
at the No. 24 position in the pevious week’s poll.
Morningside’s men’s basketball team will host
Dana College at 7:30 p.m. in the first round of the GPAC Playoffs
on Tuesday, Feb. 24.
