Hamilton Leads Mustangs In Scoring And Rebounding In 2010-11

Garth Hamilton, a 6-8 junior center from Lincoln, Neb., was the leading scorer and rebounder for the Morningside College men’s basketball team during the 2010-11 season.


Hamilton scored 412 points and grabbed 205 rebounds for averages of 12.9 points and 6.4 rebounds per game. He was the Mustangs’ leading scorer in 11 of their 32 contests and led the team in rebounding 18 times, including a 13-board haul against York College on Jan. 6 for the Mustangs’ top single-game rebounding performance of the season. Hamilton was the Mustangs’ leading rebounder 13 times in a 15-game stretch from Dec. 20 to Feb. 12, including a streak where he led them 10 games in a row.


Aside from leading the team in scoring and rebounding, Hamilton also topped the Mustangs with 19 blocked shots and ranked among the team leaders in field goal accuracy with 138 hoops in 257 attempts for 53.7 percent.


Trent Miller, a 6-1 sophomore guard from Gretna, Neb., led the Mustangs with 151 assists and 66 steals for averages of 4.7 assists and 2.1 steals per game to compliment an 8.4-point scoring average. Miller’s averages of 4.7 assists and 2.1 steals per game led all performers in the Great Plains Athletic Conference. He dealt a season’s high 11 assists in a 78-72 overtime triumph against city rival Briar Cliff University on Feb. 16 to finish two shy of Morningside’s single-game record.


Kevin Zoz, a 6-2 junior guard from Murdock, Neb., averaged 10.9 points per game and was the Mustangs’ top 3-point field goal threat with a team-high 63 treys in 167 attempts for a team-high 37.7 percent. Zoz was also one of the Mustangs’ best free throw shooters with 70 free throws in 89 attempts for 78.7 percent and made 25 consecutive free throw attempts during an eight-game stretch from Nov. 6 to Dec. 8. He had the Mustangs’ top single-game scoring performance of the season with 25 points in a 78-68 victory against Midland University on Feb. 2.


Bryan Borchers, a 6-5 junior forward from Le Mars, Iowa, ranked among the team leaders with averages of 9.4 points and 4.6 rebounds per game and topped the team in field goal accuracy with 99 hoops in 167 attempts for 59.3 percent. Borchers closed out the season with a stretch where he made 74 of 117 field goal attempts for 63.2 percent over the last 21 games.


The Mustangs’ most accurate free throw shooter was Tyler Johnson, a 6-4 sophomore guard from Council Bluffs, Iowa, who converted 24 of 30 attempts from the foul line for 80.0 percent.


Morningside won seven of its last 10 games of the season to finish the campaign with a record of 15-17. The Mustangs finished fifth in the GPAC standings with a 10-8 league mark.

 

Three Mustangs Receive NAIA Scholar-Athlete Honors

Cory Gaston, Garth Hamilton, and Kevin Zoz have been named Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athletes in the sport of men’s basketball.

Gaston, a 6-3 junior guard from McCook, Neb., has a 3.67 cumulative grade point average (GPA) with a major in engineering physics.

Hamilton, a 6-8 junior center from Lincoln, Neb., has a 3.62 cumulative GPA with a major in psychology counseling.

Zoz, a 6-2 junior guard from Murdock, Neb., has a 3.56 cumulative GPA with a major in business administration.


Student-athletes must be of at least junior academic status and have a minimum GPA of 3.50 in order to be eligible for Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athlete honors.

Hamilton Named To All-GPAC First Team

Garth Hamilton, a 6-8 junior center from Lincoln, Neb., has been named to the 2011 All-Great Plains Athletic Conference Men’s Basketball First-Team as selected by the league’s head coaches.


Hamilton was the Mustangs’ leading scorer and rebounder this season with averages of 12.9 points and 6.4 rebounds per game. He also led the Mustangs with 19 blocked shots and was second on the team with 59 assists. Hamilton was one of the most accurate shooters on the team with 138 field goals in 257 attempts for 53.7 percent and 135 free throws in 182 attempts for 74.2 percent.


He had the Mustangs’ top single-game rebounding performance of the season with a 13-board haul against York College on Jan. 6 and was the Mustangs’ leading rebounder in 18 of their 32 contests. Hamilton led the Mustangs with 22 double figure scoring performances.


In addition to Hamilton, the Mustangs’ placed Bryan Borchers, Trent Miller and Kevin Zoz on the All-GPAC honorable mention list.


Borchers, a 6-5 sophomore forward from Le Mars, Iowa, was the Mustangs’ third leading scorer and second leading rebounder with averages of 9.4 points and 4.6 rebounds per game. He led the team in field goal accuracy with 99 field goals in 167 attempts for 59.3 percent. Borchers drilled 70 of 109 floor shots for a sizzling 64.2 percent over his last 20 games of the season.


Miller, a 6-1 sophomore guard from Gretna, Neb., averaged 8.4 points and 3.6 rebounds per game and led the team with 151 assists and 66 steals for averages of 4.7 assists and 2.1 steals per game. Miller shot just under 50 percent from the field with 95 field goals in 193 attempts for 49.2 percent.


Zoz, a 6-2 junior guard from Murdock, Neb., was the Mustangs’ second leading scorer with an average of 10.9 points per game. He was the Mustangs’ most prolific and accurate 3-point shooter with a team-high 63 treys in 167 attempts for 37.7 percent. Zoz converted 70 of 89 free throw attempts for 78.7 percent and made 25 consecutive free throw attempts during one stretch of the season. He had the Mustangs’ top single-game scoring performance of the season with a career-high 25 points in a 78-68 victory against Midland University on Feb. 2.


Morningside won seven of its last 10 games of the season to finish the campaign with a record of 15-17. The Mustangs finished fifth in the final GPAC standings with a 10-8 league mark.

Hamilton Nominated For Emil S. Liston Award

Garth Hamilton, a 6-8 junior center from Lincoln, Neb., is the male nominee from the Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) for the NAIA’s 2011 Emil S. Liston Award.

The Liston Award, named in honor of the NAIA’s first executive secretary and the prime mover behind the men’s basketball tournament, has been presented annually since 1950 to a junior men’s or women’s basketball player who has shown high athletic and scholastic achievement. To be eligible, a student-athlete must have an overall cumulative grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.50 (on a 4.00 scale) and be in his/her junior year academically.

Hamilton is the leading scorer and rebounder with averages of 13.0 points and 6.5 rebounds per game for a Morningside team that will take a 15-16 record into Thursday’s GPAC Post-Season Tournament quarterfinal round game against the University of Sioux Falls. Hamilton has a 3.62 cumulative GPA and is majoring in psychology counseling.

 

 

Mustangs 8th In GPAC Coaches' Pre-Season Poll

Morningside is picked for an eighth place finish in the GPAC Men’s Basketball Coaches’ Pre-Season Poll.

Morningside returns 12 lettermen, including two starters, from a team that posted a 12-18 record last season and finished ninth in the GPAC with a 6-12 league mark.

The Mustangs will open the season with games against South Dakota Tech and Black Hills State University at the Black Hills State Classic on Oct. 29 and 30 in Spearfish, S.D.
