Mitch Carstens, a 6-3 senior guard from Grand Island, Neb., received the Most Valuable Player Award for the Morningside College men’s basketball team at the Mustangs’ awards banquet.


Carstens averaged 14.2 points and 3.7 rebounds per game and led the Mustangs with 61 steals for an average of 2.0 per game. Carstens, who also dealt 36 assists, made 154 of 348 field goal attempts for 44.3 percent, 46 of 133 3-point field goal attempts for 34.6 percent, and 71 of 94 free throw attempts for 75.5 percent.


Carstens had nine steals in the Mustangs’ 77-75 victory against Peru State College on Nov. 13 to finish one shy of a Morningside record.


He finished his career as the 25th leading all-time scorer in Morningside history with 950 career points.


Other award winners were:


Defensive Player of the Year – Cory Gaston, a 6-2 sophomore guard from McCook, Neb.


Most Improved Player – Mitchell Schultze, a 6-4 junior forward from Osmond, Neb.


Academic Player of the Year – Kevin Zoz, a 6-1 sophomore guard from Murdock, Neb.


Morningside posted a 12-18 record during the 2009-10 season. The Mustangs were Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) champions during the 2007-08 and 2008-09 campaigns and have qualified for the NAIA Division II National Tournament three times in the last five years. Morningside has a 125-53 record for a .702 winning percentage over its last 178 games dating back to the 2004-05 season.

 

 

Seniors Top Most Statistical Categories In 2009-10 Campaign

Seniors Eddie Marrs, Adam Palmer, and Mitch Carstens led Morningside College in almost every statistical category during the 2009-10 men’s basketball season.


Marrs, a 5-9 guard from Omaha, Neb., was the Mustangs’ leading scorer with an average of 14.5 points per game. He had the team’s top individual scoring performance of the season with 27 points against Hastings College on Jan. 30. Marrs, who went seven-for-seven from the free-throw line in the Hastings game, was the Mustangs’ best free throw shooter with 50 free throws in 64 attempts for 78.1 percent. He finished the season by making 29 of his final 32 free throw attempts for 90.6 percent and had a streak of 27 consecutive made free throws during that span. Despite missing the Mustangs’ final four games with an injury, Marrs still led the Mustangs with 85 assists for an average of 3.3 per game.


Marrs scored 832 points during his two-year Morningside career for the 42nd highest scoring total in Morningside history.


Palmer, a 6-5 senior forward from Sioux City, was the Mustangs’ leading rebounder in seven of their last nine contests, including each of their final four games, to finish the campaign as the Mustangs’ leading rebounder with an average of 6.4 caroms per game. Palmer, who was the Mustangs’ third leading scorer with an average of 10.4 points per game, had Morningside’s top individual rebounding performance of the season with a 14-board haul against Mount Marty College on Jan. 27. Palmer made a team-high 83 free throws, including 15 in one game on Feb. 6 against the University of Sioux Falls.

Carstens, a 6-3 senior guard from Grand Island, Neb., led the Mustangs with 154 field goals and 46 3-point field goals en route to a 14.2-point scoring average. Carstens also led the Mustangs with 61 steals for an average of 2.0 per game. He had a season’s high nine steals in the Mustangs’ 77-75 victory against Peru State College on Nov. 13 to finish one shy of a school record.


Carstens finished his career as the 25th leading scorer in Morningside history with 950 career points.


Mitchell Schultze, a 6-4 junior forward from Osmond, Neb., led the Mustangs in field goal accuracy with 49 field goals in 104 attempts for 47.1 percent.


Joel Haveman, a 5-9 sophomore guard from Avoca, Neb., led the Mustangs in 3-point shooting accuracy with 17 3-point field goals in 37 attempts for 45.9 percent.


Garth Hamilton, a 6-7 sophomore center from Lincoln, Neb., led the Mustangs with 16 blocked shots and was the team’s second leading rebounder with an average of 6.1 rebounds per game.


Morningside posted a 12-18 record during the 2009-10 season.


Marrs Named To All-GPAC Second-Team

Eddie Marrs, a 5-9 senior guard from Omaha, Neb., has been named to the All-Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) Men’s Basketball Second-Team as selected by the league’s head coaches.


Marrs, who was also a second-team All-GPAC performer in 2008-09, was the Mustangs’ leading scorer this season with an average of 14.5 points per game to compliment a norm of 3.6 rebounds per contest. Marrs also led the Mustangs with 85 assists and ranked second on the team with 53 steals for averages of 3.3 assists and 2.0 steals per game. Marrs made 151 of 334 field goal attempts for 45.2 percent, 24 of 75 3-point field goal attempts for 32.0 percent, and 50 of 64 free throw attempts for 78.1 percent.


Marrs had eight scoring performances of 20 points or more and had the Mustangs’ top single-game scoring performance of the season with 27 points against Hastings College on Jan. 30. He was the Mustangs’ leading scorer in 12 of the 26 games he played.


In addition to Marrs, the Mustangs placed Mitch Carstens and Adam Palmer on the All-GPAC honorable mention list.

He made 154 of 348 overall field goal attempts for 44.3 percent and 71 of 94 free throw attempts for 75.5 percent.


Carstens, who also earned honorable mention All-GPAC honors last season, scored 950 points during his four-year career for the 25th highest scoring total in Morningside history.


Palmer, a 6-5 senior forward from Sioux City, was the Mustangs’ leading rebounder with an average of 6.4 caroms per game to compliment a scoring average of 10.4 ppg. Palmer was the Mustangs’ leading rebounder in seven of their final nine games and grabbed 14 rebounds against Mount Marty College on Jan. 27 for the Mustangs’ top individual rebounding performance of the season. He ranked second on the team with 64 assists and third with 39 steals for averages of 2.1 assists and 1.3 steals per game. Palmer made 113 of 259 field goal attempts for 43.6 percent and 83 of 125 free throw attempts for 66.4 percent.
