Mustangs Bow Out Of Playoffs With 37-7 Loss At Sioux Falls

NAIA LogoMorningside’s football season came to an end with a 37-7 loss against second-ranked University of Sioux Falls in the quarterfinals of the NAIA Football Playoffs on Saturday at Howard Wood Field in Sioux Falls, S.D.

Sioux Falls, which posted its 19th consecutive home win, will take a 12-0 record into next Saturday’s NAIA Semifinals. Morningside, which was ranked 13th nationally in the final NAIA regular season poll, bowed out at 9-3 while making its third consecutive appearance in the NAIA Playoffs.

The Cougars posted one of their most impressive victories of the season by scoring on six of their first seven offensive possessions and by converting on nine of their first 11 third down situations. Sioux Falls led 37-0 before Morningside denied the Cougars’ bid for their sixth shutout of the season on a one-yard touchdown run by quarterback Tim Richard with 9:50 left in the fourth quarter.

The Mustangs lost against Sioux Falls for the second time this season. Morningside was held to 140 yards total offense in a 24-0 loss at Sioux Falls on Oct. 14 during the regular season.

Morningside had 175 yards total offense in Saturday’s rematch. Eighty of the yards came during a 16-play drive during the third and fourth quarters that culminated with Richard’s one-yard TD run.

Sioux Falls had things under control by the intermission when it took a 23-0 lead into the locker rooms following an opening half where it ran over twice as many plays (44-21) as the Mustangs and racked up a 256-72 yard advantage in total offense.

The Cougars took a 7-0 lead on a nine-yard touchdown pass from Chad Cavender to Mike Dvoracek with 3:38 left in the first quarter. The touchdown came after Morningside punter Peter Olsen had pinned the Cougars at their own four-yard line, but Cavender directed the Cougars on a 12-play, 96-yard drive.

Sioux Falls got out of the hole immediately when Cavender completed a 38-yard pass to Dusty Hovorka on the first play. Cavender later converted on third down three times with a 14-yard screen pass to Trey Erickson, a nine-yard scramble after he was flushed out of the pocket, and an eight-yard pass completion to Hovorka.

The Cougars stretched their lead to 10-0 on a 35-yard field goal by Matt Lindgren with 11:32 left in the second quarter to cap an 11-play, 54-yard drive.

Sioux Falls made it 17-0 on a one-yard quarterback sneak by Cavender with 3:54 left in the first half to cap a 12-play, 65-yard march.

The Cougars added one more score before the half ended when Michael Warren blocked a Morningside punt to set up a five-yard TD pass from Cavender to Josiah Fenceroy with 49 seconds left in the half.

Cavender, named the Offensive Player of the Game, finished with 23 completions in 31 attempts for 205 yards and four touchdowns. His favorite target was Hovorka, a first-team NAIA All-American in 2005, who had nine catches for 101 yards. Dvoracek, the Cougars’ other returning first-team All-American, rushed for 87 yards in 20 attempts and caught three passes for 14 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

Richard completed 11 of 19 pass attempts for 113 yards. Cody Jaminet led the Mustangs’ receivers with six catches for 61 yards, while Nick Reigle led the rushing attack with 49 yards in 17 carries.

Gabe Baughman topped the Mustangs with 12 tackles, including 11 solo stops, and a fumble recovery. Chad Hustedt added 10 tackles, including seven solos, for the 14th double figure tackle performance of his career.

Mustangs Advance In Double Overtime Thriller

Photo of Chris Becker
Chris Becker

Morningside stormed back from a 17-3 halftime deficit to win a 38-31 double overtime thriller against undefeated St. Ambrose University in Saturday’s first round of the NAIA Football Playoffs at Davenport, Iowa.

It’s on to the quarterfinals for the Mustangs, 9-2, who knocked out St. Ambrose in the first round for the second year in a row. However, this year’s triumph was a far cry from the 58-7 route the Mustangs administered to the Fighting Bees last year at Elwood Olsen Stadium.

Morningside, ranked 13th in the final NAIA regular season poll, trailed third-ranked St. Ambrose 17-3 at the intermission as the hosts appeared headed towards their 11th victory in as many contests this season.

The Mustangs narrowed the gap to 17-10 on a one-yard touchdown run by quarterback Tim Richard with 8:19 left in the third quarter to cap a 12-play, 68-yard scoring march.

Morningside struck again two minutes later on a 47-yard option pass from Trevor Alfredson to Damon Mothershead to tie the score at 17-17 with 6:02 left in the third stanza.

Morningside made it three unanswered scores with 51 seconds left in the quarter when a nine-yard touchdown pass from Richard to tight end Chris Becker put the Mustangs in front 24-17 going into the last quarter.

St. Ambrose tied the score at 24-24 on a 40-yard touchdown pass from Jim DuPage to Kyle Korth with 7:21 left in the game and the scored stayed that way to force overtime.

St. Ambrose scored a touchdown on a five-yard pass from DuPage to Tyler Driscoll in the first overtime, but Morningside answered with a two-yard touchdown pass from Richard to Becker to force a second overtime at 31-31.

The Mustangs got the ball first in the second overtime and it took them just two plays to score when Nick Reigle ripped through the St. Ambrose defense for runs of 11 yards and 14 yards for a touchdown.

The game ended when Vernon Reed, who rushed for 152 yards, was stopped shy of a first down when the Bees faced a fourth and three from the Morningside five-yard line.

Becker gave the Mustangs the most productive game of his career with five pass receptions for 52 yards and two touchdowns. Richard completed 15 of 28 pass attempts for 137 yards and a pair of touchdowns, and Reigle rushed for 68 yards in 20 attempts.

Chad Hustedt topped the Mustangs’ tackle chart with seven tackles, including six solo stops. Chris Kuehl had an interception, while E.J. Infanger and James Mowrey each had quarterback sacks.

A stingy defense that has posted three shutouts and limited the opposition to a scoring average of 12.1 points per game has been a major factor in the Mustangs’ success this season, so it was fitting that four of the Mustangs’ first-team All-GPAC selections came from the defensive unit.
