Photo of Kyle OrtegrenKyle Ortegren, a 5-11, 190 lb. sophomore wide receiver from Oskaloosa, Iowa, has been named to the first team of the 2003 NAIA All-America football team.


Ortegren, who ranked third nationally in the NAIA with an average of 7.4 pass receptions per game during the 2003 season, becomes the first football player in Morningside history to receive first-team NAIA All-America honors.


He caught 74 passes for a school-record 1l141 yards for an average of 15.4 yards per catch during the 2003 campaign. His 1,141 reception yards broke the former Morningside single-season standard of 1,006 reception yards by Todd Smith in 1998, while his 74 receptions and nine touchdown receptions were the second highest single-season totals in the Mustangs’ annals.


Ortegren caught 16 passes against Doane College on Oct. 18 to tie a Morningside single-game record. He already ranks second in Morningside history with 1,889 career receptions and 15 career touchdown receptions and is fourth in the Mustangs’ record book with 128 career receptions.


In addition, the Mustangs’ Mike Winklepleck, a 5-10, 190 lb. sophomore defensive back from Sioux City, was named to the NAIA All-America honorable mention list.


Winklepleck was the Mustangs’ leading tackler with team highs of 48 solos and 68 assists for 116 total tackles. He also led the Mustangs with two fumble recoveries and was their co-leader with three interceptions for 17 yards. Winklepleck had 3.5 tackles for losses of 13 yards, one quarterback hurry, and one forced fumble.

Bennett Named NAIA All-America Scholar-Athlete

Photo of Mike BennettMike Bennett, a 6-3, 235 lb. senior linebacker from Sioux City, has been named a 2003 Daktronics-NAIA Football All-America Scholar-Athletes.


Bennett has a 3.78 cumulative grade point average (GPA) with a major in business administration.


Bennett also received NAIA All-America Scholar-Athlete honors last year.


Daktronics-NAIA All-America Scholar-Athletes must have junior or senior academic standing and maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.50.


Bennett was the Mustangs’ second leading tackler during the 2003 season with 37 solos and 60 assists for 97 total tackles. He led the team with nine tackles behind the line of scrimmage for losses of 57 yards, 5.5 quarterback sacks, and four forced fumbles. Bennett’s statistics also included one pass breakup, one quarterback hurry, and one fumble recovery.

Livingston Named Mustangs' Football MVP

Photo of Beau LivingstonBeau Livingston, a 6-0, 220 lb. senior linebacker from South Sioux City, Neb., was named the Most Valuable Player of the Morningside College football team at the Mustangs' post-season awards banquet held Saturday.

Livingston had 32 solos and 46 assists for 78 total tackles during the 2003 campaign. He also had five tackles for losses of 22 yards, two quarterback sacks, two interceptions, two quarterback hurries, one pass breakup, and one fumble recovery for a 52-yard touchdown return.

The Mustangs also presented position MVP awards. The award recipients were:

Most Valuable Offensive Back - Craig Fobbe, a 6-3, 210 lb. sophomore quarterback from Maple Lake, Mn. Fobbe amassed a school-record 2,422 yards total offense to break the former Morningside record of 2,286 yards total offense by Jim Gibson in 1984. Fobbe passed for 2,425 yards for the second highest single-season total in Morningside history. He completed 194 of 371 attempts for 52.3 percent with 18 touchdowns and 18 interceptions. Fobbe already ranks third in Morningside history with 3,801 career yards passing.

Most Valuable Offensive Lineman - B.J. Batterton, a 6-2, 230 lb. sophomore from Des Moines, Iowa. Batterton was the Mustangs' starting center. His blocking skills helped the Mustangs average 339.8 yards total offense per game.

Most Valuable Defensive Lineman - Dusty Tallant, a 6-0, 250 lb. sophomore tackle from Sterling, Neb. Tallant had 21 solos and 20 assists for 41 total tackles to go along with seven tackles for losses of 31 yards, 2.5 quarterback sacks, two quarterback hurries, one pass breakup, and one forced fumble.

Morningside College posted a 3-7 record during the 2003 football season.

The 2003 campaign marked the Mustangs' first season of competition as a member of the Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC).

Fobbe Breaks Total Offense Record

Craig Fobbe, a 6-3, 210 lb. sophomore quarterback from Maple Lake, Minn., amassed 2,422 yards total offense during the 2003 season to break the former Morningside single-season record of 2,286 yards total offense by Jim Gibson in 1984.

Fobbe's 2,425 yards passing was the second highest single-season total in Morningside history, just 32 yards shy of Gibson's school record of 2,457 yards passing in 1984. Fobbe completed 194 of 371 attempts for 52.3 percent with 18 touchdowns and 18 interceptions.

Fobbe already ranks third in Morningside history with 3,801 career yards passing.

Ortegren Breaks One Record, Ties Another

Kyle Ortegren, a 5-11, 190 lb. sophomore wide receiver from Oskaloosa, Iowa, caught 74 passes for a school-record 1,141 yards and nine touchdowns during the 2003 season.

His 1,141 reception yards broke the former Morningside single-season standard of 1,006 reception yards by Todd Smith in 1988. Ortegren's 74 receptions and nine touchdown receptions were the second highest single-season totals in Morningside history.

Ortegren's most productive game of the season came against Doane College on Oct. 18 when he caught 16 passes for 188 yards. His 16 catches tied Morningside's single-game record first set by Gary Pettit against the University of South Dakota in 1968.

Ortegren already ranks second in Morningside history with 1,889 career reception yards and 15 career touchdown receptions and is fourth in the Mustangs' record book with 128 career receptions.

Drew Ties Single-Game Interception Record

Brian Drew, a 6-1, 175 lb. sophomore defensive back from Sioux Falls, S.D., tied a Morningside single-game record when he intercepted three passes in the Mustangs' 13-3 victory against Dakota Wesleyan University on Nov. 1 at Mitchell, S.D.

He tied a record previously set by Dwight Sann against South Dakota State University in 1969 and by Mark Brosamle against Augustana College in 1971.

Drew finished the season with a team-high three interceptions. He returned the thefts 76 yards for an average of 25.3 yards per return.

Mustangs Tie Team Single-Game Interception Record

Morningside tied a team single-game record when it intercepted five passes in its 13-3 victory against Dakota Wesleyan University on Nov. 1 at Mitchell, S.D.

The Mustangs tied a record previously set against the University of Nebraska-Omaha in 1990 and Concordia University last year.

Wright Fourth Leading Rusher In Mustangs' History

Kevin Wright, a 5-9, 210 lb. senior running back from Bronx, N.Y., led the Mustangs with 491 yards rushing in 2003.

He raised his career total to 1,556 yards for the fourth highest individual rushing total in Morningside history.

Winklepleck Tops Mustangs' Tackle Chart

Mike Winklepleck, a 5-10, 190 lb. sophomore defensive back from Sioux City, Iowa, topped the Mustangs' defense with 48 solo tackles, 68 assists, 116 total tackles, and two fumble recoveries and shared the team leadership with three interceptions.

Ortegren And Winklepeck Earn First-Team All-GPAC Honors

Kyle Ortegren, a sophomore wide receiver from Oskaloosa, Iowa, and Mike Winklepleck, a sophomore defensive back from Sioux City, were each named to the first team of the 2003 All-Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) football team as selected by the league's coaches.

Ortegren caught 74 passes for 1,141 yards and nine touchdowns this past season. Ortegren set a school record with his 1,141 reception yards, while his 74 catches and nine touchdown receptions were the second highest single-season totals in Morningside history. Ortegren also tied a Morningside single-game record when he caught 16 passes in the Mustangs' game against Doane College on Oct. 18. He was the Mustangs' leading pass receiver in eight of their 10 games.

Ortegren, who also topped the Mustangs in pass receiving last year with 54 catches for 748 yards and six touchdowns, already ranks second in Morningside history with 1,889 career reception yards and 15 career touchdown receptions and fourth with 128 career receptions.

Winklepleck was the Mustangs' defensive leader with team highs of 48 solo tackles, 68 assisted tackles, 116 total tackles, three interceptions, and two fumble recoveries. He returned his interceptions for 17 yards. Winklepleck also had four pass breakups, 3.5 tackles for losses of 13 yards, one forced fumble, and one quarterback hurry.

He led the Mustangs with six double figure tackle performances, including a career-high 19 tackles in the season's finale against Concordia University on Nov. 15.

Morningside's B.J. Batterton and Beau Livingston were both named to the All-GPAC second team.

Batterton, a sophomore from Des Moines, Iowa, was the Mustangs' starting offensive center. His blocking skills helped the Mustangs average 339.8 yards total offense and 21.0 points per game. Morningside ranked among the top passing teams in the NAIA with an average of 242.5 yards passing per game.

Livingston, a senior linebacker from South Sioux City, Neb., was the Mustangs' third leading tackler with 78 total tackles. He had 32 solo tackles, 46 assisted tackles, five tackles for losses of 22 yards, two quarterback sacks, two interceptions, two quarterback hurries, one pass breakup, and one fumble recovery.

Livingston earned NAIA honorable mention All-America honors last year when he was the Mustangs' third leading tackler with 76 tackles.

In addition to their first-team and second-team selections, Morningside also had 11 players named to the All-GPAC honorable mention list. The players are:

Cory Wirth, a sophomore running back-kicker from Tabor, Iowa.

Kevin Wright, a senior running back from Bronx, N.Y.

John Zevenbergen, a sophomore defensive back from Hinton, Iowa.

Morningside posted a 3-7 record during the 2003 season.

Mike Bennett Named To Academic All-District VII First Team

Mike Bennett, a senior linebacker from Sioux City, has been named to the 2003 CoSIDA Academic All-America District VII College Division Football First-Team as selected by College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

Bennett has a 3.78 cumulative grade point average (GPA) with a major in business administration. He is among 24 student-athletes named to the academic all-district first team.

He is the Mustangs' second leading tackler this season with 34 solos and 54 assists for 88 total tackles. Bennett leads the Mustangs with 5.5 quarterback sacks, three forced fumbles, and nine tackles behind the line of scrimmage for losses of 57 yards. Bennett, a three-year starter, is the Mustangs' active leader with 11 career quarterback sacks.

Bennett received third-team Verizon Academic All-America All-District VII honors in addition to Daktronics NAIA All-America Scholar-Athlete and NAIA second-team All-America honors last year.

He has made the Morningside Dean's Honor List and Athletic Director's Honor Roll after each of his semesters at Morningside. Bennett is a member of Omicron Delta Kappa national leadership society, Alpha Kappa Delta national sociological honor society, and Phi Eta Sigma honor society.

Members of the CoSIDA Academic all-district teams must be a starter or important reserve of sophomore or higher status with a cumulative GPA of 3.20 or higher.
