Losett And Horsley Are Record Setters During 2004 Season

Morningside had five school record setting or school record tying performances during the recently completed 2004 baseball season.

The Mustangs slugged 10 doubles and 14 triples during the season to break their former team single-season standards of 99 doubles by their 2002 team and 14 triples by their 1994 and 2000 clubs.

Individually, the Mustangs’ most prolific record setter was Chris Losett, a junior shortstop from Helena, Mont., who had 11 home runs and 61 RBIs to top Morningside’s former single-season records of 10 home runs by Rick Smith in 1988 and T.J. Sitzmann in 1989 and 54 RBIs by Chris Schiltz in 1995.

Losett also topped the Mustangs with 57 hits, 107 total bases, and a .605 slugging percentage.

Heath Horsley, a sophomore pitcher from Lawton, Iowa, had eight pitching victories to tie the Morningside single-season record previously set by Kirt Bennett in 1988 and Joel Rosacker in 2002.

Horsley was the Mustangs’ ace with an 8-2 record and a team-leading 2.30 earned run average. His .800 winning percentage was the third highest single-season victory rate in Morningside history. Horsley led the Mustangs with 67 innings pitched, the second highest single-season total in Morningside history, and seven complete games and was their co-leader with 11 starts and two shutouts.

Kerr and Rudy Pithan, a junior pitcher from Sioux City, were the Mustangs’ co-leaders with three saves.

The strikeout leader of the Mustangs’ pitching staff was Byron Banning, a junior from Whitefish, Mont., who fanned 58 batters in 66.2 innings pitched. Banning recorded the fourth highest single-season strikeout total in Morningside history, while his 66.2 innings pitched is the third highest total in Morningside history.

Grant Aschinger, a junior from Lake View, Iowa, was the top control specialist on the Mustangs’ pitching staff with only 10 walks in 62.2 innings pitched.
Morningside finished the 2004 season with a 27-27 record following an 11-20-1 finish the year before.
