Noteboom Named A NAIA Honorable Mention All-American

Jared Noteboom, a senior second baseman from South Sioux City, Neb., has been named to the honorable mention list of the 2010 NAIA All-America Baseball Team.


Noteboom slugged a school-record 19 home runs this season to break the former Morningside record of 16 home runs set by Jason Engleman last year. Noteboom was the Mustangs’ leading hitter with 63 hits in 161 at-bats for a .391 batting average with 17 doubles, two triples, a team-high 67 RBIs and 33 base on balls, 15 stolen bases, and 62 runs scored. He also led the Mustangs with an .876 slugging percentage and a .519 on-base percentage.


He was also a NAIA honorable mention All-American as a junior.


Noteboom finished his Morningside career with 193 hits in 537 at-bats for a .359 batting average with 52 doubles, six triples, 36 home runs, 155 RBIs, 33 stolen bases, and 144 runs scored.

Mustangs Have Five School Record Performances In 2010

Morningside College broke four school records and tied another during the 2010 baseball season.


The Mustangs stole a school-record 118 bases this season to shatter their former single-season best of 98 stolen bases they set last season. Morningside’s hitters produced 18 triples to top the previous school record of 16 triples in 2005.


Bret Hoch, a senior outfielder from South Sioux City, Neb., played a major role in helping the Mustangs break their triple and stolen base records. Hoch tied the Mustangs’ single-season record with six triples to match a total previously set by Nathan Rosado in 2006. Hoch also led the Mustangs with 28 stolen bases in 31 attempts for the fourth highest single-season stolen base total in Morningside history. Aside from leading the Mustangs in triples and stolen bases, Hoch also topped the team with 68 hits, 18 doubles, and 65 runs scored. He was the Mustangs’ third leading hitter with a .354 batting average. Hoch’s 65 runs scored was the second highest single-season total in Morningside history, while his 18 doubles ranked third and his 68 hits fifth among the Mustangs’ all-time single-season bests.


Hoch collected 217 hits in 609 at-bats for a .356 batting average with 46 doubles, 11 triples, 25 home runs, 134 RBIs, 85 stolen bases, and 209 runs scored during his Morningside career.


Jared Noteboom, a senior second baseman from South Sioux City, was the Mustangs’ most prestigious record breaker this season by blasting 19 home runs to top the previous Morningside record of 16 home runs that Jason Engleman set last year. Noteboom collected 63 hits in 161 at-bats to lead the team with a .391 batting average. He also led the team with 67 RBIs, 33 base on balls, a .876 slugging percentage, and a .519 on-base percentage. Noteboom’s 67 RBIs was the second highest single-season total in Morningside history and his 33 walks was the third highest total in the Mustang record book. He also scored 62 runs for the fourth highest total in Morningside history.


Noteboom finished his Morningside career with 193 hits in 537 at-bats for a .359 batting average with 52 doubles, six triples, 36 home runs, 155 RBIs, 33 stolen bases, and 144 runs scored.


Wade Morrison

Wade Morrison, a senior pitcher from Arroyo Grande, Calif., set a school record this season with 81.1 innings pitched to break his own Mustang standard of 76.2 innings he pitched last season. Morrison was the top winner on the Mustangs’ staff with a 7-5 record for the fifth highest single-season victory total in Morningside history. Morrison also led the Mustangs with a 4.20 earned run average, 13 starts, seven complete games, one shutout, and 84 strikeouts. Morrison fanned 10 batters in games against College of the Ozarks and Dordt College on his way to the fourth highest single-season strikeout total in Morningside history. He limited the opposition to a batting average over only .228 by allowing only 70 hits in 81.1 innings, including no home runs and only one triple.

Morrison posted a 21-12 record and struck out 195 batters in 236.2 innings over his Morningside career.


Jeff Gacke, a freshman from Rock Rapids Iowa, was the top pitcher out of the Mustangs’ bullpen with a team-high two saves to go along with a 4-2 record with a 5.27 earned run average in 19 appearances.


Adison Gillett, a freshman catcher from Omaha, Neb., and Travis Hanson, a freshman outfielder from Sioux City, shared the team leadership in sacrifices with five each.


Kelly Kotlik, a sophomore first baseman from Bellevue, Neb., hit .353 and ranked second on the team with 66 RBIs for the third highest single-season total in Morningside history.


Morningside posted a 28-28 record during the 2010 season and finished fourth in the Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) standings with a 15-9 league mark.

 

Kotlik Named A Daktronics-NAIA Baseball Scholar-Athlete

Kelly Kotlik, a junior first baseman from Bellevue, Neb., has been named a Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athlete in the sport of baseball.

Kotlik has a 3.60 cumulative grade point average (GPA) with majors in business administration and Spanish. He batted .353 with eight doubles, six home runs, and 66 RBIs this past season.


Student-athletes must be of at least junior academic status and have a minimum GPA of 3.50 in order to be eligible for Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athlete honors.

Hoch And Noteboom Named To All-GPAC First-Team

Bret Hoch, a senior outfielder from South Sioux City, Neb.; and Jared Noteboom, a senior second baseman from South Sioux City, were both named to the 2010 All-Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) Baseball First-Team as selected by the league’s head coaches.

Hoch, who earned first-team All-GPAC honors for the third year in a row, collected a team-high 68 hits in 192 at-bats for a .354 batting average with a team-high 18 doubles, six home runs, 65 runs scored, and 28 stolen bases. His six triples tied a Morningside single-season record previously set by Nathan Rosado in 2006. Hoch also had eight home runs and 36 RBIs.


Hoch collected 217 hits in 609 at-bats for a .356 batting average with 46 doubles, 11 triples, 25 home runs, 134 RBIs, and 85 stolen bases during his Morningside career.

Noteboom, a repeat first-team All-GPAC pick, led the Mustangs with a .391 batting average and slugged a school-record 19 home runs this season to break the former Mustang home run standard of 16 by Jason Engleman last season. In addition to their two first-team selections, the Mustangs’ Kelly Kotlik and Wade Morrison were each named to the All-GPAC second-team.

Kotlik, a sophomore first baseman from Bellevue, Neb., hit .353 with eight doubles, six home runs 66 RBIs, and 36 runs scored. Kotlik was also named to the GPAC/Hauff Mid-America Sports All-Gold Glove team. He had six errors in 429 chances for a .986 fielding percentage.


Morrison, a senior pitcher from Arroyo Grande, Calif., pitched a school-record 81.1 innings this season to break the previous Mustang standard of 76.2 innings pitched he set last season. Morrison had a 7-5 record to lead the team in victories and also led the Mustangs with a 4.20 earned run average, seven complete games, one shutout, and 84 strikeouts.


Morningside’s Javier Alvarez, Travis Hanson, Bill Meacham, and Gabe Shockman were all named to the All-GPAC honorable mention list.

Alvarez, a junior shortstop from Chicago, Ill., hit .366 with nine doubles, three triples, two home runs, 29 RBIs, 16 stolen bases, and 49 runs scored.

Hanson, a freshman outfielder from Sioux City, hit .336 with four doubles, 14 home runs, 16 stolen bases, and 32 runs scored.

Meacham, a junior third baseman from Sioux City, batted .345 with 10 doubles, two triples, five home runs, 35 RBIs, and 25 runs scored. Meacham led the Mustangs with a .438 batting average in their 24 GPAC contests.


Shockman, a senior pitcher from Fargo, N.D., had a 6-2 record with a 5.56 earned run average, one shutout, and one save.

Morningside posted a 28-28 record during the 2010 season and finished fourth in the GPAC standings with a 15-9 league mark.

Noteboom And Morrison Receive MVP Awards

Jared Noteboom, a senior second baseman from South Sioux City, Neb.; and Wade Morrison, a senior pitcher from Arroyo Grande, Calif., received the Most Valuable Player and Most Valuable Pitcher awards at Morningside College’s baseball awards banquet held on Sunday.

Noteboom has slugged 16 home runs this season to tie a Morningside single-season record previously set by Jason Engleman last season. Noteboom has collected 55 hits in 148 at-bats for a .372 batting average with 14 doubles, two triples, 16 home runs, 58 RBIs, 56 runs scored, and 15 stolen bases. Aside from leading the Mustangs in home runs, Noteboom also tops the team with 32 base on balls, a .508 on-base percentage, and a .818 slugging percentage.

Morrison is the top winner on the Mustangs’ pitching staff with a 6-5 record and leads the Mustangs’ starters with a 4.36 earned run average to go along with a team-high 12 starts, six complete games, 74.1 innings pitched, and 80 strikeouts. He has allowed 67 hits and held the opposition to a .237 batting average. Morrison has not allowed a home run this season.

Top Newcomer – Javier Alvarez, a junior shortstop from Chicago, Ill.


Rookie of the Year – Travis Hanson, a freshman outfielder from Sioux City.


Most Improved Player – Kelly Kotlik, a sophomore first baseman from Bellevue, Neb.


Junior Varsity Most Valuable Player – Josh Gross, a freshman infielder from Jefferson, S.D.; and Taylor Rasmussen, a freshman infielder-pitcher from Sioux Falls, S.D.
Junior Varsity Most Valuable Pitcher – Storm Throne, a freshman pitcher from Omaha, Neb.


Top Grade Point Average – Hanson and Kotlik.


Morningside will take a 26-26 record into this week’s Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) Baseball Championships in Mitchell, S.D., and will open tournament play with an opening round contest against Doane College on Thursday at noon.

 

Meacham Named GPAC Player Of The Week

Bill Meacham, a junior third baseman from Sioux City, has been named the Hauff Mid-America Sports/Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) Baseball Player of the Week.


Meacham collected 12 hits in 18 at-bats for a .667 batting average with three doubles, one triple, one home run, and eight RBIs to help lead the Mustangs to a 4-1 record last week. He went three-for-three with a double, triple, two RBIs, and three runs scored in a 15-5 non-conference win against Dana College and went three-for-three with two doubles and three RBIs in a 10-3 GPAC triumph against Nebraska Wesleyan University.


Meacham is riding a nine-game hitting streak. He has 18 hits in 31 at-bats for a .581 batting average with 11 RBIs over the last nine games to raise his season’s average from .293 to .366.


Morningside has won six of its last seven games and will take a 22-20 record into a Tuesday non-conference game against Briar Cliff University at 4 p.m. at Lewis & Clark Park.

 

 

Alvarez Named GPAC Player Of The Week

Javier Alvarez, a junior shortstop from Chicago, Ill., has been named the Hauff Mid-America Sports/Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) Baseball Player of the Week.


Alvarez had nine hits in 14 at-bats for a .643 batting average with seven RBIs in the Mustangs’ five contests last week. He was especially impressive in the Mustangs’ doubleheader sweep of Northwestern College on April 2 when he went seven-for-seven with a double, triple, and five RBIs.


Alvarez has five multiple hit performances in his last six games to raise his season’s batting average to .402.


Morningside has won five of its last seven games and will take a 15-17 record into a 5 p.m. non-conference game against the University of Sioux Falls on Wednesday, April 7, at Lewis and Clark Park.

 

 

 

 

Hoch Named GPAC Player Of The Week

Bret Hoch, a senior outfielder from South Sioux City, Neb., has been named the Hauff Mid-America Sports/Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) Baseball Player of the Week.


Hoch collected 13 hits in 21 at-bats for a .619 batting average with four doubles, one triple, two home runs, and eight RBIs to lead the Mustangs to a 3-2 record in their five games last week. He went four-for-five with two doubles, a home run, and two RBIs in an 11-7 loss against Jamestown College on March 23 and went seven-for-eight when the Mustangs swept a doubleheader from Dana College by scores of 11-1 and 21-4 on March 28. Hoch was three-for-three with a double, home run, and three RBIs in the opener and was four-for-five with a double and two RBIs in the nightcap.


Morningside will take a 12-15 record into a game against Augustana College on Thursday in Sioux Falls, S.D.
