Good Things Are Happening at Morningside College!

A Five-Year Review: 1999-2004 Accomplishments

Academics

  • A new curriculum was developed and was implemented with the fall 2004 semester.
  • Focus, a program for students with learning disabilities, is now in its third successful year.
  • A director of assessment and institutional research was hired.
  • The college underwent a successful accreditation review by the Higher Learning Commission (HLC); Morningside has held continuous accreditation since 1913.

Admissions

  • Fulltime enrollment increased from 744 to 980.
  • Freshman enrollment increased from 171 to 316.

Advancement

  • "This is Our Moment," the college's $30-million fundraising campaign was launched publicly on Oct. 30, 2004, with over $20 million already raised for scholarships, capital improvements, and in support of the endowment.
  • More fun alumni activities were planned and conducted.

Athletics

  • New affiliations were established:
    • National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA)
    • Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC).
  • New sports were established:
    • Men's golf
    • Men's and women's swimming
    • Men's and women's soccer
    • Men's and women's tennis
    • Wrestling.

Financial stability

  • A balanced budget was accomplished ahead of schedule.
  • Employee compensation was improved by various means, including:
    • Enrollment bonuses
    • Merit program
    • The Thomas S. Thompson Staff Excellence Awards
    • The Sharon Walker Faculty Excellence Awards.

Physical plant improvements

  • The college completed more than $12 million in renovation or new construction, including:
    • New quarters for Information Services in Roadman Hall
    • New "smart" classroom with wireless connection to the Iowa Communications Network (ICN)
    • James and Sharon Walker Science Center
    • Buck's Snack Bar and new bookstore
    • Allee Gymnasium locker and weight rooms
    • The Joan L. and Norman W. Waitt, Sr., and Donald E. Poppen Apartments
    • Lewis Hall lobby renovation
    • Roberts Stadium Phase I.

(Last but not least) Other important accomplishments

  • New mission and vision statements were developed.
  • The board of directors was reorganized.
  • An integrated marketing plan was developed and implemented.
  • Morningside was designated a "Best Midwestern College " by The Princeton Review.
  • Morningside was named a "Best College 2005" by U.S.News & World Report.
