Morningside College's
theatre department will present a musical production of the
Grimm's Brothers children's story "Rapunzel" Friday through
Saturday, October 1-3,
at Klinger-Neal Theatre,
3700 Peters Avenue. Show times are
7:30 p.m. on Friday, 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Saturday, and 1
p.m. and 3 p.m. on Sunday. The performances are
sponsored by Morningside's Academic and Cultural Arts Series
(ACAS).
Rapunzel is the story
of a young woman with extraordinary hair locked in the top
of a tall tower by a jealous witch. She is discovered by a
handsome prince, who battles the witch in order to win Rapunzel's
freedom.
Cast members are
Gethen Baker, a sophomore from Edina, Minn., as Rapunzel;
Brandon Shostak, a freshman from Le Mars, Iowa, as
Prince Daniel; Andrew Goodell, a sophomore from Sioux
City, as Martin, a peasant farmer; Jennifer Benjamin,
a sophomore from Estherville, Iowa, as Gretchen, the farmer's
wife; Jenna Rehnstrom, a junior from Hartington, Neb.,
as Gopher, a friendly gopher and narrator of the story; and
Mikaela Johnson, a senior from Colorado Springs, Colo.,
as Mother Gothel, the neighborhood witch.
The director and
set designer is Arthur Moss, assistant professor of theatre
at Morningside. Bette Skewis-Arnett, associate professor and
chair of the theatre department, is the costume designer.
The accompanist is Terry Brooks, an adjunct faculty member
at Morningside.
Other members of
the crew are: Jessica Jenkins, a junior from Essex,
Iowa, assistant director and stage manager; Sharona Ernst,
a freshman from Falls City, Neb., light board operator; Lia
Lauderback, a sophomore from Spencer, Iowa, costumes and
assistant stage manager; Cassie Zimmerman, a freshman
from Oxford, Iowa, lighting crew; Diana Garcia, a freshman
from Sioux City, running crew; Dani Reeves, a sophomore
from Hamburg, Iowa, set crew and assistant house manager;
Dave Kenan, a freshman from Cherokee, Iowa, set crew
and run crew; and Maggie Larson, a freshman from Irwin,
Iowa, set crew.
Stan Gill, a theatre
professional who was a guest artist-in-residence at Morningside
in 1998, wrote the play.
Admission for the
public is $3. Reservations are not required, but can be made
by calling 712-274-5196.
Approximately 2,400
students and teachers from area pre-schools and elementary
schools will attend special weekday performances of the play.
A limited number of seats are still available for the weekday
performances.
Morningside's
theatre department produces four plays a year, including
its fall and spring children's plays, which have entertained
more than 28,500 elementary school students and their teachers
since 1987.
