A food festival accompanied by live music from The Magnificent Board of Directors will be one of the main attractions when Morningside College celebrates Homecoming 2006, “Taste of Morningside,” Thursday through Sunday, Oct. 5-8.
The “Taste of Morningside” food festival featuring favorites from local vendors and a performance by The Magnificent Board of Directors will take place on Saturday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the new parking lot located at the intersection of Peters Avenue and South Paxton Street. A fireworks display will follow the food festival.
The food festival will feature Bob Roe’s Point After buffalo wings, Charlie Boy taverns from Miles Inn, pizza from Jerry’s Pizza, The Tastee Inn & Out’s onion chips, hot dogs and hamburgers from Coney Island, Sneaky’s chicken, brisket from Smokin’ Tony D’s, veggie snacks from Sodexho Food Services, and ice cream treats from Well’s Blue Bunny. Advance tickets can be purchased at the price of $10 for 12 tickets from the Morningside Alumni Office at (712) 274-5107. Tickets will be $1 per ticket the day of the event. Venders will determine the number of tickets needed per food or beverage item.
The Magnificent Board of Directors, inducted into the Iowa Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2001, is a Siouxland-based 10-piece band featuring four horns, a rhythm section, lead guitar, keyboards, and lead vocalist. They perform the hits of Chicago, James Brown, Van Morrison, the Blues Brothers, and classic hits from the 1960s and 1970s. Morningside alumni Joel Orthman (1971), Dave Snakenberg (1976), Kevin Linder (1981), and Mike Guntren (1997) are all members of the group.
The Homecoming alumni weekend will feature special reunion events for the classes of 1946, 1956, 1966, 1976, 1981, 1986, and 1996. In addition, there will be reunions for Morningside’s 1956 North Central Conference championship football team, members of fraternities and sororities, and biology majors.
The Homecoming Coronation and Talent Show will take place Thursday at 7 p.m. in Eppley Auditorium, 3625 Garretson Avenue. The event is open to the public and free of charge.
An alumni art exhibit will be on display in the Helen Levitt Art Gallery, 3625 Garretson Avenue, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday.
Friday events include a reunion dinner for the classes of 1946, 1956, and 1981 at 7:30 p.m. at the Marina Inn in South Sioux City, Neb.; class reunion gatherings at various locations on Historic Fourth Street at 7:30 p.m.; a Morningside children’s theatre production of “Cinderella” at 6 p.m. in Klinger-Neal Theatre, 3700 Peters Avenue; and campus tours departing from Lewis Hall, 1501 Morningside Avenue, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Saturday events include the “Taste of Morningside” food festival and live music by The Magnificent Board of Directors at Lewis Park; campus tours departing from Lewis Hall from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.; a 5K (3.2 mile) Wellness Fun Walk/Run at Elwood Olsen Stadium and around the Morningside campus at 8 a.m.; a reception for alumni who majored in biology at 9:30 a.m. in the James and Sharon Walker Science Center, 1707 Morningside Avenue; the M-Club Brunch at 10:30 a.m. in the lower level of the Hindman-Hobbs Center, 3501 Peters Avenue; Morningside’s Homecoming football game against Dakota Wesleyan University at 2 p.m. at Elwood Olsen Stadium; and the fireworks display.
The annual Homecoming worship services will be at 8:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. on Sunday at Grace United Methodist Church, 1735 Morningside Avenue. Sunday’s events will also include a production of “Cinderella” at 3 p.m. at Klinger-Neal Theatre and alumni men’s and women’s soccer games from 9 a.m. to noon at Elwood Olsen Stadium.
Reservations are required for Friday’s class reunion dinner and can be made by calling (712) 274-5107. Cost for the dinner is $25. Admission prices for the “Cinderella” performances are $6 for adults and $3 for students in grades K-12. Ticket prices for the football game are $6 for adults and $2 for students in grades K-12 and can be purchased at the gate. The Wellness Fun Walk/Run is sponsored by Morningside’s Wellness Committee and is open to alumni, friends, and children. Entry fee is $10 before Oct. 1 and $15 after Oct. 1.
