Food, class reunions, music, and football will be part of Morningside College’s 2013 Homecoming celebration Oct. 11 through 13.
Alumni, friends, Morningside students and parents will have the opportunity to attend a variety of events during the weekend. Reunion classes honored during homecoming will be 1943, 1953, 1963, 1973, 1983, 1988, 2003 and 2012. Other reunion groups recognized during the weekend will include 1977-1982 football teams, 1968 era wrestling teams, 1962 choir, Collegian Reporter staff, and all mission trip participants.
On Thursday, Oct. 10, Morningside students will participate in a talent show and homecoming coronation at 6:30 p.m. in Eppley Auditorium, 3625 Garretson Ave. The events are free and open to the public.
The weekend kicks off on Friday, October 11, with a reunion dinner for the classes of 1943, 1953, and 1963 at the home of Morningside President John and Robin Reynders. Other alumni, reunion groups, and friends will gather at Emma’s Event Center, 3828 Stadium Drive, for dinner and live music. The dinner will be followed by a performance by a hypnotist at 8 p.m.
In addition, the John Bowitz Retrospective art exhibit will be on display during homecoming weekend from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Oct. 11 and 12 in the Eppley Art Gallery. Bowitz recently retired after teaching at the college for over 35 years.
A full schedule of events on Saturday, Oct. 12, includes reunion class receptions at various locations on campus, the M-Club luncheon and athletic hall of fame awards presentation. The Morningside College Music Department will present a vocal and instrumental concert at 11:30 a.m. in the newly renovated Eppley Auditorium.
The homecoming football game against Hastings College begins at 1:30 p.m. in Olsen Stadium, 3201 Peters Ave. After the football game, “Taste of Morningside” begins at 4 p.m. under the “big top” tents on the west end stadium parking lot. The “Taste of Morningside” will feature music by The Rumbles and food from House of Q, Red Bone Café, La Juanita, Wild Bill’s Funnel Cakes, Miles Inn, Bob Roe’s Point After, Jerry’s Pizza, Palmer Candy, and Dairy Queen, among others. Tickets for “Taste of Morningside” can be purchased on site.
At 6 p.m. and 8 p.m., respectively, the women’s and men’s soccer teams will host games versus Dordt in Olsen Stadium.
On Sunday, Oct. 13, a worship service will take place in Eppley Auditorium at 10 a.m., followed by a marquis brunch at 11 a.m. in Olsen Student Center, 3609 Peters Ave.
