"Taste of Morningside" draws large crowds during last year's homecoming celebration.

Morningside College celebrates 2011 Homecoming/Family Weekend October 7-9

Food, class reunions, music and football will be part of Morningside College’s 2011 Homecoming & Family Weekend celebration October 7 through 9.

Alumni, friends, Morningside students and parents will have the opportunity to attend a variety of events during the weekend.  Reunion classes honored during homecoming are 1951, 1961, 1971, 1981, 1986, 1991 and 2001. Other reunion groups recognized during the weekend will include band, agribusiness and football.

On Thursday, October 6, Morningside students will participate in the homecoming coronation at 7 p.m. and a talent show at 8 p.m., both in Eppley Auditorium, 3625 Garretson Avenue. The events are free and open to the public.

The weekend kicks off on Friday, October 7, with a reunion dinner for the classes of 1951 and 1961 at 6:30 p.m. at the home of Morningside President John and Robin Reynders. Other alumni, reunion groups and friends are invited to an Oktoberfest with traditional German food and a polka band at 6:30 p.m. in the Yockey Family Community Room located in Morningside’s Olsen Student Center, 3609 Peters Ave.

Also taking place during the day on Friday are campus tours that depart on the hour from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. from Lewis Hall. An alumni art exhibit will be on display during the weekend from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Eppley Art Gallery.

A full schedule of events on Saturday, October 9, begins with an M-Club brunch at 10:30 a.m. in the Yockey Family Community Room. Reservations for the brunch can be made by calling 712-274-5315. The Morningside College Music Department will present a vocal and instrumental concert at 11:30 a.m. in the Buhler Outdoor Performance Center.

The homecoming football game against Doane College begins at 2 p.m. in Olsen Stadium. After the football game, “Taste of Morningside” begins at 4:30 p.m. across from Dimmitt Hall and immediately south of Peters Avenue. “Taste of Morningside” will feature music by the Fabulous Flippers and food from Bob Roe’s Point After, Miles Inn, Dairy Queen, the House of Q, Jerry’s Pizza, Sneaky’s, Tastee Inn & Out, Wild Bill’s Funnel Cakes, Coney Island, Palmer Candy and Jolly Time’s Koated Kernels. Children’s games and activities also will be set up on the “Taste of Morningside” site. Tickets for “Taste of Morningside” can be purchased at the site. A fireworks display will cap the day’s events at 7:30 p.m.  Also on Saturday, campus tours will depart from Lewis Hall on the hour from 9 a.m. noon. The alumni art exhibit in Eppley Art Gallery will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday.

On Sunday, October 10, brunch will be served from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the main dining room in the Olsen Student Center.
