Morningside College has reported the largest number of new students in nearly 40 years with a total of 428 new full-time students enrolled for the fall 2010 semester.
Morningside records show that the 2010 fall enrollment of 343 full-time freshman students and 85 full-time transfer students is the largest number of new students at the college since the fall of 1972. Morningside enrolled a total of 1,208 full-time students for the fall of 2010.
According to Morningside College President John Reynders, college officials were not surprised by the large number of new students.
“We had more than 2,500 freshman enrollment applications for the fall the semester, the largest number of applications Morningside has ever received,” Reynders said. “As result, we have an outstanding freshman class. About 47 percent of this year’s freshmen graduated in the top 25 percent of their high school classes, the highest percentage we have seen at Morningside in more than a decade.”
Fall 2010 enrollment statistics indicate that 85 percent of Morningside’s full-time students are from Iowa and Nebraska. Sioux City students make up 21 percent of the college’s full-time enrollment, and students from other areas of Iowa account for 45 percent. Nebraska students represent 19 percent. The remaining students are from 23 other states, some from as far away as California, Maine and Texas.
Morningside has a total of 23 international students on campus from 12 countries: Albania, Canada, China, Dominican Republic, Germany, Hungary, Japan, Kenya, Netherlands, Norway, Paraguay and United Kingdom.
