Morningside College students from China, who are here as part of an exchange program with Hwa Nan Women’s College in Fuzhou, will give a presentation on the Chinese Moon Festival from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 22, in the Hickman Johnson Furrow Learning Center, 1601 Morningside Ave.
"The students want to repay Morningside College and the larger welcoming community by sharing some of their culture, interacting and answering questions,” said Pam Hoadley, coordinator of the Hwa Nan exchange program.
This event is free and open to the public.
A time for lunar worship and family reunion, the Moon Festival is considered to be one of the most important Chinese celebrations. In the learning center, participants will stop at different stations to learn about Moon Festival legends, enjoy traditional items like moon cake and chrysanthemum tea, and learn easy Chinese phrases.
“It is amazing to witness the energy the students put into an event like this, how much they enjoy sharing elements of their culture with the college community and beyond,” Hoadley said. “The students work hard and demonstrate the speaking and presentation skills that are instilled in them from a young age. They really appreciate that the community welcomes this interactive experience.”
