When a Sioux City radio station was looking for a fresh perspective on promotion, station leaders turned to Morningside College advertising students, who delivered just what they were looking for.
“The presentations were very well done, and we were happy with the many different options presented to us during the time we spent with students,” said Justin Barker, program director at 102.3 Jack FM. “They did good research and were able to bring younger ideas to our radio station.”
The students worked in groups to develop campaigns that would promote awareness of 102.3 Jack FM. The students conducted market research and then created promotional materials that ranged from a billboard saying “No, my number isn’t 867-5309” to Jack FM advertisements that could be attached to parking meters to make them look like microphones.
“I learned how to work as an integrated part of a group, where each member of the team has different but equally important duties. I also learned how rewarding it is to finish something well,” said Catelin Hoistad, a Morningside College senior from Huron, S.D. Her work resulted in an internship with Jack FM.
Morningside advertising students have been doing work for Siouxland businesses for over 10 years. The project is directed by Pam Mickelson, professor of business administration. She said this was the first time her students have done work for the media, and she was pleased they were able to produce serious ideas that the radio station could take and use right away.
“We enjoyed working with Morningside College students and Pam especially,” Barker said. “She was a joy to work with, and when she boasted about the talented individuals in her class, she was being honest. I would surely recommend this program to other businesses in Siouxland because it is a great way to learn more about your company and get perspective from the next group of professionals in the job market.”
