Morningside College celebrates Homecoming/Family Weekend 2008 Oct. 10-12

Food, class reunions, music and football will all be part of Morningside College’s Homecoming/Family Weekend 2008 celebration October 10 through 12.

Alumni, friends and families of Morningside students will have the opportunity to attend a variety of events on and off campus during the weekend.  In addition, special reunion events are planned for the classes of 1948, 1953, 1958, 1968, 1978, 1983, 1988 and 1998. Other reunion groups who will be recognized during the weekend include baseball players and sororities and fraternities.

Morningside students will participate in the homecoming coronation and talent show at 7 p.m. on Thursday, October 9, in Eppley Auditorium, 3625 Garretson Avenue. The event is free and open to the public. 

The weekend kicks off on Friday, October 10, with a reunion dinner for the classes of 1948, 1953 and 1958 at 6:30 p.m. at the home of Morningside President John Reynders. Other alumni, reunion groups, friends, students and their families are invited to an all-you-can-eat country barbecue and an evening of activities, live music and entertainment at the Lewis Bowl Annex, 3828 Stadium Drive, beginning at 6:30 p.m. Also taking place during the day on Friday, starting at 9 a.m., are an alumni art exhibit in the Eppley Art Gallery and campus tours that depart on the hour from Eppley Auditorium.

A full schedule of events on Saturday, October 11, begins with an M-Club brunch at 10:30 a.m. in the Yockey Family Community Room located in the Olsen Student Center, 3609 Peters Avenue. Reservations for the brunch can be made by calling 712-274-5192.  A family picnic with live music begins at 11 a.m. on the new Hilker Campus Mall located in the center of the college’s campus. The homecoming football game against Hastings College begins at 2 p.m. in Olsen Stadium.

After the football game, “Taste of Morningside” begins at 5 p.m. across from Dimmitt Hall and immediately south of Peters Avenue. “Taste of Morningside” will feature food from Bob Roe’s Point After, Miles Inn, Dairy Queen, Aggies, Jerry’s Pizza, Sneaky’s, Tastee Inn & Out and Coney Island. The Magnificent Board of Directors and the Bob Dawdy Blues Band will provide music. Children’s games and activities also will be set up on the “Taste of Morningside”site. Tickets for “Taste of Morningside” can be purchased at the site. A fireworks display will cap the day’s events.

Also on Saturday, campus tours will depart from Eppley Auditorium on the hour from 9 a.m. to noon. The alumni art exhibit in Eppley Art Gallery will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday.

On Sunday, October 12, worship services at Grace United Methodist Church, 1735 Morningside Avenue, will be conducted at 8:30 and 11 a.m. Brunch will be served from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the main dining room in the Olsen Student Center. Reservations for the brunch are required and can be made by calling 712-274-5107. An alumni baseball game begins at 2 p.m. at Lewis and Clark Park, 3400 Line Drive.
