Morningside College to celebrate Homecoming 2007 "Taste of Morningside"

Morningside College’s returning alumni will have the opportunity to see the recent campus improvement projects when the college celebrates Homecoming 2007 “Taste of Morningside,” Friday through Sunday, Oct. 5-7.

Morningside has invested $15 million in campus improvements that are taking place between the fall of 2006 and spring of 2008, and most of the improvements have been completed.

A Morningside volleyball match will take place in the completely renovated Rosen Verdoorn Sports Center-Allee Gym, class reunions will be held in the Yockey Family Community Room in the renovated first floor of the Olsen Student Center, and campus tours will showcase Lags Hall, the Jensen Softball Complex, and a glimpse of the Hilker Campus Green Space, which is scheduled for completion by May of 2008.

“With these new facilities comes renewed fervor in celebrating the rich history and traditions of Morningside College,” said Gene Ambroson, Director of Alumni Relations. “Morningside has a flavor all its own, and for the second time in as many years, we will celebrate the uniqueness of Morningside by hosting the ‘Taste of Morningside’ celebration after the Mustangs’ football game against Hastings College on Saturday.”

Last year’s Homecoming featured a food festival featuring favorites from local vendors accompanied by live music from The Magnificent Board of Directors. Both events are back this year and will take place on Saturday from 5 to 7 p.m. in the parking lot across the street from Dimmitt Hall at the intersection of Peters Avenue and South Paxton Street. A fireworks display will follow the food festival.

The food festival will feature Bob Roe’s Point After buffalo wings, Charlie Boy taverns from Miles Inn, pizza from Jerry’s Pizza, Tastee Inn & Out’s onion chips, hot dogs and hamburgers from Coney Island, Sneaky’s chicken, Boss Hog BBQ, and ice cream treats from Well’s Blue Bunny. Tickets can be purchased at registration or at the event at the price of $1 per ticket. Venders will determine the number of tickets needed per food or beverage item.

The Magnificent Board of Directors, inducted into the Iowa Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2001, is a Siouxland-based 10-piece band featuring four horns, a rhythm section, lead guitar, keyboards, and lead vocalist. They perform the hits of Chicago, James Brown, Van Morrison, the Blues Brothers, and classic hits from the 1960s and 1970s. Morningside alumni Joel Orthman, Dave Snakenberg, Kevin Linder, and Mike Guntren are all members of the group.

The Homecoming alumni weekend will feature special reunion events for the classes of 1947, 1957, 1967, 1972, 1977, 1982, 1987, and 1997. In addition, there will be reunions for members of Morningside’s football teams from 1948 to 1956, members of Morningside’s wrestling teams from 1962 to 1978, the Acacia Fraternity, and Student Ambassadors.

The student’s Homecoming Coronation and Talent Show will take place Thursday, Oct. 4, at 7 p.m. in Eppley Auditorium, 3625 Garretson Avenue. The event is open to the public and free of charge.

An alumni art exhibit will be on display in the Eppley Art Gallery, 3625 Garretson Avenue, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.
