Construction work
has begun this week on installing new field lighting and repairing
the bleachers at Roberts Stadium. Both projects are scheduled
to be completed by August 15, 2004.
Morningside College
has contracted with Thompson Electric Co. of Sioux City for
the installation of new field lighting at Roberts Stadium
at a contract amount of $318,500. The college has contracted
with Western Waterproofing Company, Inc. of West Des Moines,
Iowa, to complete the north and south bleacher restoration
at a contract amount of $303,200.
Additionally, Morningside
is in the process of seeking bids for installing a new public
address system.
The new lighting
system, with four galvanized poles and 128 metal halite 1500-watt
fixtures, will provide 70 foot-candles of lighting on the
football field. According to Schroder Engineering, P.C. of
Sioux City, there should be improved uniformity, less glare,
and less spill light onto the surrounding neighborhood. The
Iowa High School Athletic Association's minimum standard for
football field lighting is 50 foot-candles.
The old lighting
system provided an average of 21 foot-candles on the field
and a range of 4 to 15 foot-candles on the track. Removal
of the six existing field lighting towers is underway, and
the old towers will be taken to the Sioux City Community School
District's maintenance yard.
A new expanded underground
electrical distribution service will serve all existing stadium
facilities, as well as the new lighting system, and replace
the overhead wiring.
The bleachers will
be removed to facilitate joint and caulk repair, concrete
repair, and the urethane deck coating. The bleacher brackets
will be sand-blasted and painted.
