Families of Morningside College students will have the opportunity to attend a variety of campus events when Morningside College hosts Family Weekend 2005, “We’re Building Excitement,” on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, Oct. 14-16.

Morningside’s annual family weekend is hosted by the Parents Council, with assistance from the Alumni Relations Department and other college staff.

The activities will begin on Friday with a performance by the acoustic trio Scratch Track scheduled for 8 p.m. in Buck’s in the lower level of the Olsen Student Center, 3609 Peters Avenue. The event, sponsored by Morningside’s Academic and Cultural Arts Series (ACAS), will feature a mix of funk, folk, rock, gospel, and beat box.

Saturday’s events will start with a reception from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. in the Spoonholder Café in the Hickman-Furrow-Johnson Learning Center, 1601 Morningside Avenue, where students and their families will have an opportunity to visit with Morningside President John Reynders and members of the Morningside faculty. A walking tour of the newly remodeled facilities on campus will begin at 10:30 a.m. A southern style tailgate meal featuring barbeque chicken and pork, andouille sausage, Louisiana rice and beans, cole slaw, corn bread, and desert will take place at newly remodeled Elwood Olsen Stadium at 11:30 a.m. Cost of the tailgate is $7 for adults and $2 for students. Saturday’s events also include a football game between Morningside and the University of Sioux Falls at 1 p.m. in Elwood Olsen Stadium and a family entertainment show featuring the musical talents of Morningside students at 7:30 p.m. in Eppley Auditorium, 3625 Garretson Avenue. Admission prices for the football game are $6 for adults and $2 for students in grades K-12.

Sunday’s events will include a 10 a.m. worship service on the “M” near Roadman Hall, 3600 Peters Avenue, and a Sunday brunch from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Olsen Student Center. Cost of the brunch is $8 for adults and $4 for children 12 and under.
Registration will be held Saturday from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. in the Hickman-Furrow-Johnson Learning Center.

The Parents Council was formed in 2002 to develop and implement programs that involve parents in ways that are meaningful to them and beneficial to the college. The Parents Council is comprised of parents of current students or of former students who have graduated from Morningside. The council conducts its work through subcommittees that focus on assisting in the college’s admissions efforts, in the development of various parent publications, and the planning of family events.
