Morningside College recently received national recognition when its chapter of the Alpha Lambda Delta National Honor Society won a 2011 Order of the Torch Award.
Alpha Lambda Delta is a national honor society that recognizes and encourages academic excellence among first-year college and university students. Seven chapters were selected to receive the Order of the Torch Award from the 270 chapters across the nation. Award recipients were selected on the basis of outstanding chapter work in programming, internal communications, campus visibility and overall presentation of their application.
“While the Morningside College chapter is a small chapter, its members continue to make a big impact on the campus and in the local community,” said Dr. Susan Huffman, president of Alpha Lambda Delta National Honor Society, who came to Morningside recently to present the award. “The Order of the Torch committee was very impressed with the creative, clever ways that Morningside chapter members used to introduce new students to the organization and to contribute to service projects throughout the Siouxland area and the Morningside campus. Through both their own activities and collaboration with other student and community organizations, Alpha Lambda Delta made a positive difference in the lives of those less fortunate.”
Other winners of the Order of the Torch Award for the 2010-11 academic year are California University of Pennsylvania in California, Pa.; University of Connecticut in Storrs; Indiana University – Purdue University at Indianapolis, University of Southern California in Los Angeles; University of Texas-Pan American in Edinburg; and Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo.
Kelci Teut, a junior from Hinton, Iowa, served as president of Morningside’s Alpha Lambda Delta chapter last year. Other officers were Mary Horton of Sioux City; Elizabeth Norton of Yuma, Ariz.; Stefanie Ford of Brooklyn, Iowa; Kristin Shaw of Creston, Iowa; Kathleen Arnts of Alta, Iowa; Nicole Seier of Lincoln, Neb.; Chelsey Dunivan of Meadow Grove, Neb.; and Cora Kugler of Watertown, Minn.
“From day one, these students showed they could work together to achieve amazing tasks, whether it was decorating cookies for every freshman student, serving various community nonprofits or promoting academics on campus,” said Dr. Marty Knepper, professor and chair of English, who advised the chapter with Terri Curry, vice president for student life and enrollment. “A well-led group can accomplish so much more than an individual. That is what they taught me as I sat on the sidelines, impressed and applauding."
Morningside College also received Order of the Torch Awards in 2001 and in 2007.
