Sioux City native to perform at Morningside with U.S. Navy’s jazz ensemble

Sioux City native Justin Kisor

Justin Kisor, a Sioux City native and North High School graduate, will be performing with the U.S. Navy’s Commodores at Morningside College on Tuesday, Nov. 16, at 7:30 p.m. at Eppley Auditorium, 3625 Garretson Ave.

Kisor will be performing with the Commodores, the jazz ensemble of the U.S. Navy Band.  The Commodores are composed of about 20 of the Navy’s top jazz and big band musicians.  The performance will be free to the public but tickets will be required to attend.  The event is sponsored by the Morningside College Music Department and the North High School Music Department.

After graduating from North High School, Kisor attended the New School of Music at Mannes College in 1997 and quickly established himself in New York City playing with jazz greats such as the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, Norah Jones, David Berger’s Sultans of Swing and the Charles Persip Big Band. In between his studies or New York City performances, Kisor toured with the modern dance company “Complexions,” which took him all over Europe and the U.S.

Kisor studied trumpet with Wynton Marsalis, Metropolitan Opera Orchestra’s former Principal Trumpet Mark Gould, Lew Soloff and Joe Shepley. After graduating from the Julliard School of Music in 2004, he toured Germany with jazz trombonist Wycliffe Gordon and drummer Winard Harper before joining the U.S. Navy Band Commodores.  He is the son of Larry and Vicki Kisor.

Known for high energy performances that mix classic jazz tunes of yesterday with original compositions and arrangements of its own members, the Commodores have performed with greats such as Ray Charles, Terry Gibbs, and Clark Terry. Tickets may be ordered through the following locations: Morningside College Music Department, (712) 274-5208; North High School Music Department, (712) 239-7000; and Ray’s Midbell Music, (712) 276-7297.
